  1. How do you get it to be that thick dan? Past few times I tired, it came out very runny.
  2. Ric, the biggest part of this endeavor is personal contact with patients and their families so I'll only be hanging out with one family a day. So no need to more than one camera.
  3. Haj, I googled neck straps and they are inexpensive enough to where I can just buy one myself. Or use the one from my D800 if it fits. I am using a Gordy's wrist strap with it now. But thanks for the handling info on the RX100. I'll take it away from consideration.
  4. I have a strange request of sorts for a camera to be used in a very particular set of conditions. Through my medical school, I am trying to follow along some pediatric patients (think oncology, PICU, general pediatrics etc) and their families and experiencing a day with them. The point of the project is to give young children some cameras (Fujifilm very kindly donated 20 single use film cameras to our club) and try to see the world from their perspective. I believe that even in the face of adversity, children have an uncanny ability to be optimistic where adults might perhaps give up hope. To my surprise, the person in charge of making all this happen at the hospital has said it would be ok for the kids to take pictures in the hospital itself! This was the original intent of the project but after being quoted HIPAA violations at 14 different institutions, I gave up the idea and suggested just giving the film cameras to kids to take home so they could take pictures of whatever they found interesting. We still plan on doing this. However, the kids being allowed to take pictures on hospital grounds comes with the stipulation that the camera they use be digital so that if anyone who doesn't sign a consent form accidentally gets photographed, the image can be deleted on the spot to keep everyone happy. As such, I wonder what camera would best serve this purpose. I personally own a D800 and a Nikon F5 neither of which are light enough to be handled with dexterity by someone admitted to a pediatric wing (I would guess). So is there a camera that fits the following requirements... 1. Light/small enough for a child to hold/operate without any issues. 2. Good enough image quality (the hospital wants to have some of these images printed reasonably large for a big event in March - maybe something like 11x17? I don't know what size for sure but I'll find out next Friday). 3. Ability to shoot in relatively poor lighting conditions. Hospitals are either lit with tube lights or have them turned off for the comfort of patients. Want to make sure that the camera has reasonably decent white balance (if shooting JPEG). 4. A wide lens or some measure of image stabilization. I myself don't have the most stable hands. I certainly wouldn't assume that anyone else does. So just in case... 5. Fast AF. Given my limited interaction with kids operating cameras, they don't seem to want to depress the shutter button half way for the focus to lock and then click to take the picture. 6. The camera is almost exclusively to be used inside the hospital so please disregard use outside. Better light will just be icing on top. 7. This is probably silly to mention but a neck strap, however flimsy, is kind of a must. We can't afford the camera accidentally being dropped. Most cameras probably come with one but just wanted to mention it in case they didn't. Although I don't know how much they cost on their own so if it is an inexpensive item, feel free to ignore this requirement. The club's budget is ~$500 - I doubt #2 would be satisfied for anything less than that amount but please correct me if I am wrong. The budget can be stretched another $50 in a case where there is overwhelming support. From everything I have read so far, the Ricoh GR 'seems' to fit the bill especially with the snap AF mode (although I have only read about it - don't know how well it works in practice or how well it would work in this particular case). One of the variants of the RX100 family comes to mind as well but I have only ever used NEX bodies and don't know how well the RX100 would do in the conditions mentioned above. An x100 perhaps or would the AF be too slow?
  5. Does corner loading matter if no one is there to hear the sound?
  6. anyone with the Geek Out 1000 experience the wifi cutting out issues with macbook airs?

    The Killing

Had no clue it was back on. Guess I'm not sleeping tonight. Really wish the show goes on past this season.
  8. Nikon F5 with Kodak Max 400.
  9. The line out of the motherboard in the desktop is as noisy as anything I have ever heard. It does have an optical out though... Last night I pulled out the bottlehead crack and hd650s and they sounded mighty fine. I loved them with the emotive xda1 and the xda2 is only $219 right now but I don't have the room for it. I haven't kept up with the dac market for the past few years. The PS Audio DL 3 works well with the speakers so I am not inclined to do anything with it but it is already being fed by an Apple TV and only has one optical input. Any suggestions for a dac that has an optical input in a similar budget (if need be I'll try to make room for the xda2 but I'd rather not)? Anything that has a low enough noise floor to work with the jh16s would be awesome as well. Might extend the budget a bit for that if both purposes are being solved. I tried Mike's Pico Slim a long time ago and could hear the hissing sound in the background so use that as your benchmark I guess in terms of noise floor.
  10. Friday - walked 2 miles. Saturday - walked 12 miles. Sunday - walked 8 miles. Monday - walked 8 miles. I laughed when the cab driver who took us to the hotel said that New Orleans has something about it that gets in your blood and gets you addicted. You keep coming back for more. I see it to be true now. Still have another half a day left tomorrow but just an amazing time so far. Julie and I were long overdue a vacation. with med school starting we didn't have much couple time so this was a much needed getaway from reality.
  11. Had the catfish meunière a few hours ago. I refuse to rinse my mouth. Probably one of the best meals I've ever had. The gravy was licked off the plate. Just fantastic stuff.
  12. Whoops didn't see you posted this jack. Thanks for the detailed response. We are staying at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside. Nothing fancy but close to a bus station and and more or less equidistant to all the places we wish to visit. I've run into some discrepancies (preservation hall tickets being $45 online but trip advisor reviews saying $15 at the door - usually it's the other way round) but we will deal with them once we get there. I'm getting excited.
  13. That looks fantastic. Any idea of where one can purchase a DVD or a download Ric? Everyone in the photography club loved the trailer and we were going to try to make a movie night out of it.
  14. Both of my photographs submitted to a juried art exhibition were accepted Can't wait till Thursday to find out if they won anything. Hooray!
  15. This is what I am getting when I import the .tiff file into Lightroom. In the scanning software it looks normal but when I save the file it looks like this...
  16. Any suggestions for flattening the film? Once the film dried, it was bowed out from the center the entire way. I wonder if this convexity affected the scanner. However with the autofocus of the scanner would that not have been accounted for? Just trying to rule out all the possible variable.
  17. VICTORY IS MINE figured out that the fixer was not in there long enough. Left it in there for ~7 minutes instead of the suggested 3 minutes and got super nice clean film. Scanned with relative easy. Now trying to figure out why it is out of focus You think that it is a body or a scanner issue, Ari? Same lens works fine on my D800.
  18. Yesterday I might have been a few seconds off the times but today I watched the temperature the entire time and was very particular.
  19. Yup getting the film on the spool was a fucking disaster something went wrong in the development process as well but I don't know what. Should have tried a random roll first as there were a few images I really wanted on the roll I fucked up last night. Going to take random shots on another roll and use it as practice. Hopefully I can get it right this time.
  20. Going to try to develop some Kodak 400TX film tonight or tomorrow. Just wanted to check to see if these times seem appropriate. 1. Film in tank. 2. Prewash to prevent air bubbles while adding developer. 3. Prepare and add 1+4, 250ml solution with http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/188027-REG/Ilford_1155055_Ilfotec_DD_X_Developer.html 4. Wash with running water again. 5. Prepare and add 1+19, 250ml solution with http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/169348-REG/Ilford_1893870_Ilfostop_Stop_Bath_500ml.html 6. Wash with running water again. 7. Prepare and add 1+4, 250ml solution with http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/253199-REG/Ilford_1984262_Rapid_Fixer_Liquid_1_Liter.html 8. Wash with running water again. 9. Prepare and add 1+200, 250ml solution with http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/25041-REG/Ilford_1905162_Ilfotol_Wetting_Agent_Liquid.html 10. Dry and scan. Only thing I don't know at this point is how long 3 needs to be done for. Any suggestions from the film people?
  21. Taking Julie to the French Quarter for our third year anniversary (Aug 12th). Can't believe she has tolerated me for three years now! We get in to New Orleans at 7:25pm on Aug 8th and fly out at 4pm on Aug 12th. Already have tickets for the WW 2 Museum. Any suggestions from those in the area or have visited the region in the past? Neither of us drink so the suggestions need not revolve around bars unless of course they serve good food/have good music. I don't do well with loud music in closed off places so suggestions for open areas would be great. Also, looking for suggestions for non touristy food places that don't cost an arm/leg. Something the locals would enjoy. The hole in the wall places have turned out to be the best for the palate and the wallet. Thanks
  22. Discovered Sonny Stitt. I am in love.
  23. Also with the Sigma 50. I left it at f/1.4 because I wanted to see how it did wide open. Can only get better from there. No sharpening/clarity applied anywhere. Just played with the colors.
