It doesn't affect FR that much because indeed orthos are almost purely resistive and thus have a flat impedance plot, but it affects damping. Contrary to the waterfall plots Audeze posted and even Tyll measured, I thought the bass was a bit bloated so having an iron fist control over the bass in the form of low output impedance amp would be necessary for me. Also, don't forget, amps don't necessarily have very flat output impedances either.

It doubles the voltage swing since one channel is inverted, but doubling of output current is up to the task of the amplifier, since each channel sees half the load impedance. The actual amount of power that can be transferred into the load depends on the relationship between the output impedance of the amplifier and the impedance of the headphones. I'm just going to put out there that I think matching the relatively low impedance LCD-2 with a 400 or 800 ohm output impedance amp is a terrible idea and is incredibly inefficient, with most of the power dissipated in the amplifier instead of the headphones, not to mention the damping factor is nonexistent. Edit: Though I guess maybe you could consider it a current source amp??

Repertoire Those are the repertoire requirements. The actual Tchaik concerto is played only by the finalists, so pretty much everyone is eliminated before they get to even play it. You're preaching to the choir here. Past a certain level, talent is highly overrated and it's dedication and just plain luck that makes or breaks a musician's career. Thanks for the encouragement. I don't know about for the other instruments, but for violin it is arguably the biggest international competition, a close second being the Queen Elisabeth. And speaking of Van Cliburn, I spent a long while watching the streaming vids of the Van Cliburn competition last year. Good stuff. I'm thinking Ysaye Ballade, Waxman Carmen Fantasy, and Prokofiev first concerto, and I need to pick out one more. For the compulsory but pieces I can somewhat choose from, probably Bach Chaconne, Paganini 15 and 17, Shostakovich sonata, and Mozart 5th concerto. Thanks! I'm halfway expecting something to dick me over sometime in the near future already. Seriously, so much of success in the music business is just based on luck. I'm pretty sure there will be online streaming. Just got back from another lesson and he invited me for a beer and dinner and we had another nice talk. What a great guy, I know he means the best for me.

Thanks, guys. I have gone through a whole slew of extremely odd situations to get to where I am today. Aimless is right, I didn't seriously consider playing until I randomly found out I got accepted into the school of music. I guess this calls for a little storytelling... I applied late since I didn't think I'd get in and wasn't expecting anything in the first place and managed to get the very last audition slot open. Anyway, fast forward a bit, freshman year I decide this music thing is actually really great, tell my parents maybe I want to pursue a career in music, and my mom completely flips and tries to kick me out of the house and disown me several times. Fast forward a bit, the politics that go on between the string faculty and the sheer arrogance they show when they just aren't very good at playing or teaching, means I can't take it anymore so I unofficially quit and was the onset of my major bout of depression. I'm just glad I was introduced my current teacher through the school of music and that he has been so helpful in teaching and even helping me decipher and deal with my life issues from an outsider's point of view. Sad to say but he might be more of a dad than my dad has ever been, and I've only known him just over two years.

QFT In case anyone gives a shit, the one bit of good news I've gotten since I started college happened yesterday. My teacher basically said he's willing to support me in my endeavors for the Tchaikovsky competition if I really commit to busting my ass practicing. Hopefully I'll see you in Moscow, Marc.
