  1. If he's willing to resign with the Pels when his contract is up, the Kings shafted themselves hard, as usual. New twin towers! Speaking of twin towers, did anyone see The Admiral at Canjam? Pretty hard to miss a 7 footer, but I didn't see him until some pics of the event afterwards, and then a few weeks later he was one of the judges for the All Star dunk contest.
  2. Pretty sure it was a KEMAR 45B
  3. Hmm good idea, might shoot them an email. I'm wondering about that mid treble hump that seems to show up consistently, and whether it's from target curves, some artifact from the dummy head or all these headphones happen to have a hump there. A couple caveats to my vintage headphone results. The pads are more supra aural than circumaural and weren't coupled to the dummy head properly, so take the bass with a grain of salt. Channel matching was surprisingly good, though. Also the srm212 may have been clipping driving the ECR500
  4. AP measurements.. didn't get any requests for any other measurements except from that weird troll who might be an mtoc alt so I didn't ask for any others note that they equalize to both their free field and diffuse field target curves, whatever they may be https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5zob5hhiitrugp4/AADVBwGiA9AxjmCtthnvAqiHa?dl=0
  5. Tried the kill the clock mod and what it kills for me is any lock onto the signal (no sound) so I removed it. Thankfully I didn't kill the receiver and the DAC still works. Anyone have experience swapping YM3623 out for CS8414?
  6. Not much of a rind on you
  7. At only $150k a Steinway D is a solid 220lb heavier than the 770lb Clearaudio, much better value. Needs occasional maintenance but should last 30 years before needing to be rebuilt, and gives you way more audio satisfaction
  8. Happy birthday!
  9. Happy birthday!
  10. I wish I had a spare Lambda ribbon cable handy but an extension cable could work. What do you do for the Y split? IIRC the SR-X with stock supraaural pads had Grado level comfort, so around 30 minutes into wearing them it felt like my ears were being mauled by a small woodland creature. I think it might be causing the treble peak as well because it's not there on the Gamma Pro, so definitely need to investigate the SR-3/5 transplant further. Thanks for pioneering! SR007 pads are too pricey for me but I think there's several pads out there now that should fit the SR-3/5 frame, should I need to pad roll. Edit: Just did some price searching. SR007 pads are $130 in the US but around $70 in Japan......
  11. I believe what you're asking can be explained by the Cone of Confusion. Sound sources with nearly identical interaural time differences and interaural level differences could be anywhere along the cone, as far as the auditory system can tell. You can gain some info in real life based on spectral cues and simply tilting your head to change the ILD and ITD, but with headphones those don't really help.
  12. Thanks! How's the SR-3 Pro sound, anyways? I assume you prefer it to the SR-X Pro? Not sure I notice a roll-off but did notice a peak... back in the day I did some modding to try and get rid of it but don't think I managed to get rid of it completely, at least with the stock frame and pads. I think I've got an old SR-3 shell somewhere to use as a transplant, but would need a cable. Maybe Douglas Ip's new Stax shop in Texas can hook me up with one.
  13. Audio reproduction is a bunch of trickery designed to fool you into thinking you are listening to something live from distance, with varying degrees of success. The thing is, audio recording and reproduction is nothing at all like listening to live music, from the start (microphone type and placement to mixing/mastering, etc) to finish (speakers/headphones). Headphones, with the drivers less than an inch from your ear, and with earpads that could be in or on your ear, bypass or change some of that transfer function, like your head and pinna, and have to emulate sound that comes from a point source 3 meters or so away. Hence the need for various equalization curves that no one has agreed on, of which free field and diffuse field are currently the most popular. Most headphones these days are a combination of both, leaning towards diffuse field. Then there's the whole equal loudness contours thing, and we definitely know from firsthand experience that people like to listen at different volumes. Even listening live, people can have drastically different experiences with sound. Sitting in a concert hall up in the stands is vastly different from sitting in the first few rows. Where you stand relative to the speakers in a rock/metal concert changes the sound a bunch, along with the people in the room. The farther you are from the sound source, the more the acoustic space and reflections come into play.
  14. I was thinking more along the lines of transfer function of the combination of mainly the resonances caused by the outer and middle portions of the ear. It's a little different for everyone based on the dimensions of the cavities and whatnot, and that 1-3kHz region is where the ear is most sensitive/most of the acoustic gain is happening. But yeah your point is also valid... "natural" sound is all relative, anyways. I believe Sennheiser did listening tests with a bunch of test subjects and averaged them out to develop their diffuse field curves for the HD800. There should be a way to re-individualize that, where you find some way to scan the dimensions of peoples' ears, correlate that with listening tests, and upload that into a database so you can just grab whatever equalization you need based on your closest match or add a new entry if you don't match with anything. That sounds so silicon valley. Time to get a startup going
  15. Poorly IMO. Also they were horribly uncomfortable for me I had a lot of problems with that 1-2kHz bump in the Utopia but it seems like a lot of people don't seem to so it could just be a difference in pinna/concha resonance thing
  16. Spiffy Denafrips! Can you read what opamps are in the analog section on the left, or did they get the Ray Samuels treatment? Also, what regulators are they using in the PS? I am currently using a cheap USB to spdif converter, which is apparently a whole other can of worms. But apparently the YM3623 receivers are notorious for jitter and I'm trying to figure out if it's what's causing that noise. USB to I2S would bypass the YM3623 and go straight to the digital filter. There's some "stop the clock" mod which supposedly improves things, haven't really looked into it but it might be worth trying. Or I could maybe try to hack in a different receiver or add a PLL? Anyone have thoughts/recommendations? Doing some light googling, I believe the AVR-3300 uses AD1855s? I know the AVR-5700 uses 1704s and has the ALPHA processing on the 2 main channels, DF1704 on the others. If you're getting something new or "new" then maybe consider jumping on the R2R bandwagon
  17. Cool, let us know if your opinions change. The Gamma Pro and SR-X Pro sound pretty different to my ears, even though they use the same drivers. Boy do I know that feeling. I listen to $10 earbuds out of my phone most of the time... for some reason there's some level of comfort in knowing I've come full circle
  18. The earcups are massive but it's just enough to fit all the stuff that's already there, I don't think there's space to put anything else in If you can find one of the bespoke 5 pin Superex plugs to reterminate your EP5, I can hand off the energizer unit to you when you come to NYC and you can ship it back to me when you're done with it
  19. R/blue bottom means the crazy red wire that they soldered together and insulated with a piece of wax paper, which ends up next to a blue one at the bottom of the driver, held together with putty. Edit: the pinout I drew on the napkin is when you're staring at the plug straight on. Not the jack
  20. Find a meet Jude will be attending, Jacob!
  21. Okay thanks anyway. The PCM1702 definitely does not support DSD The DA500 has got that typical R2R smooth sound but there's some weird high frequency noise going on that's messing with the sound of the fundamental frequencies. Might be some sort of sideband going on. I'm wondering if it might be from jitter (in the flesh!).. don't think it's from the ALPHA processor because I've heard other Denon products with it and they didn't have this high frequency noise.
  22. How does it sound? Especially vs. various Stax
  23. Do you have a recommendation on which one is good? There's a ton of listings on ebay, which I'm too lazy to sift through. I want to add USB input to the DA500 and if it works well, see if I can add it to some other DACs.
  24. Hope you're right but if the past is any indication the Knicks are gonna be in for a long one. I think Dolan is doing a pretty good job of taking back from Phil his status as the most hated man in New York. I mean, there's got to be a reason the players who have been through the revolving door that is the Knicks usually are better on other teams. The whole Triangle thing is only part of it. Melo's 5 year contract with the no trade clause was nutty from the start, and yeah Joakim's contract doesn't make sense, either. Then there was that whole Bargnani thing. Only good thing has been Porzingis but he's been having problems with his Achilles because they've been playing him crazy minutes when he's a young 7'3 sophomore in the league. Might be why he keeps camping around the 3 point line and doesn't look as aggressive. Twitter's been going nuts about the Dolan/Oakley incident. Going to be interesting what happens at the Knicks game tonight, for sure
