  1. Hm, the Sextetts were the most efficient of any of my full-size headphones. I might pick up a pair of QP55x for an SFI transplant, but not until I figure out how to make my AT 702 SFI transplant successful.
  2. The room they will be put in is approximately 15x30 but with a large open space to the side that leads to other areas of the house, and has a fireplace that I'm guessing should be shut. Looks like delamination is a significant problem but is a fairly straightforward fix as long as the damage isn't too bad.
  3. My dad's looking for some speakers and of course I recommended something planar, like some Maggies. Is $100 for what is probably a pair of MG 1.5s a good idea? Any problems you think I/he might encounter other than need for significant amounts of power for amplification?
  4. I wanted it for my SR-Lambda, so it was for the SR-202 arc assembly. They said the SR-303/404 arc assemblies are more expensive. Here is their first email response to me: Here is their second:
  5. They did for me in May when I was asking them how much an arc assembly would cost.
  6. Electrostatics that haven't been used for many years take longer to charge up, though. My SR-5NB took about 15 seconds when I first got it, now it takes about one. I still don't know what the hell is going on with my ESP10, though. spritzer, if the channels are reversed when I fool around with balance control does that mean I wired it wrong? Could it just be that the foam inside disintegrated and is shorting things?
  7. Mine is the size of the Death Star. But don't mind my craziness. I haven't had a chance to fool around anymore with the T50RP. And really won't for another month.
  8. Some toobs.
  9. Stax were going through a brown phase, apparently... ever since the Lambda Sig and Sigma Pro, through to the Omega 2 MkI and SR-404. Of course, only the SR-404 is completely shit brown from top to bottom. From pics, the color of the SR-303 is a slightly darker shade of the color of mucus that drips from my nose when I'm really sick.
  10. Hm, I know that absorbing backwave absorbs treble so it doesn't come bouncing back all messy, so that would just decrease (bad) treble. I'm not sure what else I can try. I think I'll try another layer of felt, I guess... for a total of three... I feel like if I make the reflex dot any bigger it will just sound like a huge jumbled mess. I've also decided that I must keep the front port unplugged. I can't stand the congested sound of the plugged port and putting a reflex dot in front just decreases the treble and makes it more congested.
  11. That sounds exactly like what I did, except I keep trying to get more treble out of it for some strange reason so I resorted to damping a bunch and a huge reflex dot and it's still not good. I might just be going insane, though.
  12. I prefer cigars, not that I've ever tried the former. But never while listening to headphones.
  13. That sounds great. I'm in the midst of final tweakings on the T50RP, myself, and will post my final mod scheme here. Edit: Plugging the front ports has a huge effect, for some reason I still don't understand. I think it increases bass and impact but also causes some harshness and a non-smooth sound. I much prefer the smoother sound of un-plugged since I am satisfied with not much bass and would much rather take smoothness and natural sound.
  14. Eastman is a good school, but it isn't in the same league as Juilliard or Curtis for violin, trust me. Alright, I'm going to go with dropping some classes. Thanks for talking it through with me.
  15. 1. The chances depend on how much time I have between now and then to practice, which translates to how many classes I take and how much effort I put into them. Hence the original question. 2. If I make it into one of the best two conservatories in the nation (not counting Mannes), I'd say fairly good. I don't plan to start sucking anytime soon. 3. Rest of my life, as long as I don't have to deal with playing in an orchestra for large lengths of time. I'm definitely a solo person. I love music. I'm just also practical, my parents even more so. I was almost kicked out of the house the first time around for mentioning considering going into just music. I very much understand that most people couldn't care less about their jobs and view it just as a way to put food on the table and am grateful of this one chance my parents are giving me to truly succeed in this field.
  16. Good, I like saving money. But it is hard to decide between the two extremely hideous colors. I wish they kept everything black. They already label the new Lambdas by their proper names and the 404 has a wider cable. Damn that thing is going to be massive and heavy and you're probably going to have to massively shield everything from everything else. I got something called school and not failing to deal with now, but I'm probably going to build one of runeight's Very Compact Hybrid Amps after March 6 and then build an SRD-7 MkII circuit after that. I'll order parts for two or three and see what happens. Definitely not going to ship trafos though, not very cost effective to ship.
  17. Any difference you heard between the 303 and 404, smeggy? Yeah, I think it's time to build me a SRD-7 MkII.
  18. I prefer to ask unbiased people mainly in other fields of work because I already know what people I know would say. It basically boils down to the age-old question of doing music and quite possibly going nowhere with it versus going with something safe, along with balancing trying to finish undergrad in a sane amount of time. I'm looking at 5 years with my double, currently, possibly with some summer classes. An extra year doesn't seem too long but it makes a difference in the music world, with many of the major worldwide competitions capping off age at ~30. I should've added these details in my original post.
  19. He's already written three recommendations for me, for Curtis, Juilliard, and Mannes. I got into the audition round in all three. I feel like he would say drop most of my classes if I asked him. Where should I ask, then? Violin, extremely varied, from 0 to 8 hours a day. Depends on how much time I have. Doubling in EE and music, currently, but I'm still on winter break until the end of this week. Most of the famous violinists who migrated to the US have ended up in New York, and at least technically faculty at Juilliard.
  20. Nevermind, it's more like 15 feet, which is fine. Once I swap in a bigger reflex dot I think it's good to go. Once I do that, I'll be sure to compare it to my T40v1.
  21. I'm actually getting some of this problem with my T50RP. It's more like 10 feet if 20 is optimum (I prefer more in real life, brass instruments are really freaking loud), which is still too close for me, except for music that calls for immediacy. Not sure what to do, I didn't damp too much and I finally got it to around the right frequency balance for me. I still need to swap in a bigger reflex dot somewhere. Doesn't matter if I can't fix it, this close sound is something some of my other headphones don't do well. I can hear bad editing done very clearly (mainly grafts), which is hilarious. If anyone else has the CD I'm currently listening to, Viktoria Mullova's Shostakovich/Prokofiev 2 CD, 2nd mvmt of the Prokofiev, 1:10 in. I admit, I'm guilty of bad editing myself.
  22. Ouch. My current teacher went all the way through to a DMA in music at Juilliard and ended up as a prof at my current school. It's quite a lot of work, but I think there are quite a few benefits as well, like doing something I really want, and meeting some cool people along the way, all over the world.
  23. Drop a few classes so I have a better chance of transferring to Curtis or Juilliard? Auditions are coming up in about a month. I'm currently taking 8.
