It's okay, I'm guilty of also trying to purchase more dynamics. I hope they will be used to just serve as a reminder of how superior planars are. If you do get an AD2000 let us know how it is compared with your orthos. I've always been curious about both it and the W5000, but both are way more than I want to spend on a pair of headphones at this point. I was already stretching it with my electrostatic Floats.
-
dBel, are you going dynamic on us???

On top of that, might as well stick some Black Gates in there. Everything could use a healthy dose of moar Black Gates. pabbi (and Birgir), how's the prototyping coming along for the Poor Man's amp?

I'm going to try and get a feel for these headphones in the main DT48 thread going on right now. I hope Uncle Erik saves the day with some actual logic and good impressions because right now things aren't looking hopeful. I'm pretty sure kool bubba ice is going to get over these soon and find something new to rave about, like he did the multitude of headphones prior to these.

I absolutely despise and never use antivirus softwares because a lot of them seem like viruses/adware themselves, just not as bad as the real ones, and they definitely do make the computer run really slow. I usually don't do things or go to sites that would cause me problems with pop-ups or whatever, but when it does happen occasionally, I just system restore to an earlier date I know was fine. Usually just the most recent restore point.

Investigation into possible mods for the Stax SR-404

I love a good DIY project, and I love to save money. Now I won't have to buy an O2, right? -
LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) Volume Control
mypasswordis replied to Tachikoma's topic in Audio Accessories
If you have any random resistors on hand, something in the range of a few hundred ohms should do. Just try it out, as long as it's greater than 100 ohms or so. -

Haha, I forgot about other LEDs in the circuit/case, too. Mm, nothing like males with black nail polish. Just put a resistor in series before the LED, no point in lighting up the entire case, and if you open it up, the entire room, with the LEDs. The photocells might not be able to handle such brightness anyway. LEDs typically only need a few milliamps to be bright enough. -

I laughed when I first saw these "LDRs" because they are indeed just photocells, with some LEDs in front. I never would have thought such a crude way of having variable resistance would be good sounding. You can't have too much ventilation in your casing, for obvious reasons. -
The BHSE is so far ahead of the ES-1 in terms of design that it's not even funny. And the build quality and workmanship of Justin's builds is so far ahead of Mikhail's it's not even funny. Of course, I've never heard the BHSE and have extremely limited impressions with the ES-1 so I can't comment on sound. Couldn't you ask Justin if it's possible to put in a 45 step attenuator?

If Uncle Erik weren't also adamant about the DT-48 without clearly trying to start some shit up, I'd dismiss the headphone as yet another FOTM and lose interest completely. I'm still half expecting them to sound like sonic feces. Hopefully I can try the HD800 at the next meet in the DC area, whenever that might be. Read: hopefully Sennheiser will finally start sending them out soon and Dreadhead can make it to the next meet so I can listen to it.

:o:o It's okay, Birgir, you can splurge every once in awhile to stave off your withdrawal symptoms.
-
That is true, although there are several caveats to that, for me. One is the fact that most people say the E/90 is crap and the 580V pro bias isn't enough so I'd have to likely build my own amp with adjustable bias. Another is build quality. I don't know who Craig is but hell yes, do review it.
-
Do want. No monies, though. And I think I might prefer to source an Airbow if at all possible for that kind of money anyway.
-
Wow, not bad at all. Maybe I'll try something like that with my Lambda. I'd prefer a finer metal mesh for aesthetics but that also increases reflections.
-
I'm probably way in the minority but I got most of my 'stats for less than the cost of a new ESW9, a lot of them for much less, and would prefer not to shell out more than the 300 or so it would cost to build runeight's poor man's 'stat amp. I actually don't think many people are plugging their HD650s and K701s into their iPods, even on Head-Fi, and there's still a slight barrier to be had with dynamic headphones with the 1/4" to 1/8" converter, not being able to be used portably due to size and sound leakage, long cable, etc., not to mention poor sound from being driven insufficiently.
-
I'm not sure too many sheeple will follow this since the price of the A-10 is just going to be through the roof. If only electrostat owners weren't also people who want every last bit of sound quality they can eek out (oh wait, that's why they own them in the first place) then we could have more stuff like the poor man's electrostat amp that can be built for less than $300. Not to say that we shouldn't have ultimate statement pieces like your BHSE and sort of the A10 in terms of price, but statement pieces aren't the best way to get the common audiophile to switch to 'stats.
-
Isn't the A10 close, with its preamp section? I'm also waiting for internal pics before I make any final judgments but based on the capabilities of the tubes used for the electrostatic section it is obvious that it's not going to be the most powerful electrostatic headphone amp designed. Of course that title would go to the BHSE.

Happy birthday!

True. Also, maybe I just wasn't born in the right (tube) era, but I just don't see why running a tube a couple hundred volts above its rated max is an acceptable idea. No one with tubed Stax amps seem to be complaining about short tube life, though.
-
The criticism over there was deleted.
-
He probably wanted to pick tubes that were highly rollable, albeit not suited for the job, so buyers would spend hundreds of dollars and hours upon hours finding the magic combo that would color the sound in just the right way to mask how bad the amp is. If the output tubes are run at more than their max capacity, they're going to end up having to "roll" them anyways.

People could wear a bandoleer filled with 6-10 rechargeable 9Vs. Or be really hardcore and buy a crapload of lithiums. Or be really really hardcore and carry around a lead-acid battery. Except that's not very portable.
