  1. I think the Barrett and Waters led Pink Floyd were both Pink Floyd, just different. What happened after/because of The Final Cut, maybe not so much. I have a hunch that what happened from the split has got Roger Waters still bitter about the whole thing 30 years later, so he decided to put bits of his era of Pink Floyd in his songs on the new album. Not sure how happy the other members of the band are about that...
  2. I do everything by hand, and hand drilling and tapping heatsinks actually isn't too bad as long as you make sure all the holes line up. And with L brackets you just need 2 or 3 blind tapped holes to mount the bracket to the heatsink. That said, a drill press would be a lot more convenient for pretty much every other aspect of chassis work...
  3. The new Roger Waters album seems more like an homage to Pink Floyd by a cover band (eg Smell the Roses sounds like a worse version of Have a Cigar) so I'm going back to the real McCoy.
  4. Have a great one! And a doubly great one for Father's Day!
  5. I can't wait to drink the tears of all the keyboard warriors pushing their lame group-think agenda and spamming the HF Z1R thread when they finally realize Jude's measuring setup is slightly better than pieces of leather, some foam, and a mannequin head they stole from a Macy's. Coincidentally, Sony's measuring setup is a bit better as well.
  6. Next time you can just take out the opto chip and put it back in when you are done adjusting
  7. If you find the SR-X treble pleasant you aren't going to like the SR-5NB treble no matter the pads used.
  8. Never saw this coming.
  9. Nice, glad to see a few others using Hakkos as well! Nice! I find that the tips you get for next to nothing also don't last very long, but then again the soldering station itself didn't last very long so it was probably killing the tips faster as well. I've only been using Hakko clones since the start, figured it might be cool to finally get the real thing but now thinking maybe a 937 clone would have been enough. Wow, so Radioshack finally bit the bullet. I made a fair amount of last minute Ratshack electronics runs, paying > 10x normal prices for bog standard parts. The last time I was there (last year), I was just trying to find a simple 2n2222 or 2n3904. They were selling them for around $2 each and you could buy 100 of them for like $4 online so I just walked out. :/ Met a mech engineer doing a Ratshack run at the same time.
  10. Bought my first real soldering station after my latest one died, just a lowly Hakko FX-888D but it's better than the junk I've been using so far. I don't really need anything fancy now that I'm switching to mostly SMT. Possibly too late to ask, but is everyone still happy with their stations?
  11. Yeah, the Warriors dominance for the next 3-4 years most likely means the rest of the league is just going to wait it out and concentrate on building through the draft like the Warriors did, which means even less competition from the bottom 28 teams. Any Kings fans in the Bay area? It's hard to be a Kings fan when the front office is one of the worst in the league, and that's saying something when compared to the Jim Buss ran Lakers and Knicks in general.

    Top Gear

The liquid electrolyte in typical lithium ion batteries is flammable and enough external force will short the electrodes so they are indeed like grenades, and they are neatly packed together so if one of them goes off it can set off a chain reaction. Hopefully they will be replaced by solid-state or other safer kinds of batteries soon.
  13. Send them to me, I will save you from having to listen to weird sounding headphones.
  14. The expert looking at the BHSE should be able to find the problem. Did he/she check unloaded vs loaded voltages, pre-reg and post-reg voltages, etc? If not, he/she is not an expert. From 2 seconds of googling images it looks like the BHSE power supply is the original version power supply with BJT current source, or similar.

  16. Harmonic just means integer multiples of the fundamental frequency, whether they are odd or even. If you really want to get into musical harmony, the perfect fifth is not an even multiple of the fundamental with an interval ratio of 3:2 and neither is the major third, which is an interval ratio of 5:4. Even order harmonics represent octaves, which strengthen the fundamental which may or may not even be present, giving a larger than life ringing tone. A combination or Tartini tone is most commonly produced using a fundamental and its fifth, in which a common subharmonic is heard psychoacoustically. Overtones are any frequencies above the fundamental frequency. tl;dr solid state haters need to seek haven somewhere else.
  17. He had 39/11/9 today and has been playing crazy good all 3 games. One could say it's the bad choices he made as acting GM catching up with him, as the role players continue to be ghosts... Tristan Thompson with 0 pts, 3 rebounds, and 1 King manslaughter charge. Steph got more rebounds in a single game than Tristan has the entire series.
  18. Don't forget the ECR400-800 era of the '70s. Not sure if Sony had anything going on in the global recession of the early '80s
  19. Better is all relative anyway. All the frequency measurements at IF and sbaf, etc are equalized to various curves which no one even agrees on are correct, and which vary from person to person (hrtf). Also, the people at Audio Precision (Who are obviously also part of AES) agree that distortion at the most sensitive part of the audio range at around 1-4kHz is the most important which is audible even with more than even a tenth or two of a percent, while bass distortion is like an order of magnitude harder to detect. Yet I haven't seen any headphone review ever mention this. In other words, along with not being standardized, measurements should be weighted with frequency when it comes to human hearing, despite some people not knowing how logarithms work.
  20. Agreed. Pretty much every "high end" headphone has as many shortcomings as mid-tier headphones and everyone's hearing is different, so it's all about picking what flavor works best for you. Actually, the shortcomings tend to be more interesting/extreme because they're playing with the edges of physics. At this point I fully expect a discovery 3 months from now that the review pair is different from others.
  21. Too conservative and you counted 10% line variation twice. Stick with 350-360vac transformer with 550V caps and you will be fine, as 600V+ caps are hard to source and they're probably very large. You can always measure your mains voltage to take some guess work out of it (be careful). YMMV but personally I find it unnecessary to go above 400V rails for any amp unless you are like pabbi1 and want to blow out your eardrums, or just like overkill. Going from 400 to 450V only increases headroom by 1dB anyways, and as you can see makes life harder.
  22. Agreed. LeBron looks to be finally getting to the point where he can't be on the floor doing everything for 45 minutes every night, and trying to defend KD well on top of that is pretty impossible. Tristan isn't fast enough to keep up with KD, and Kevin Love isn't good at defense. Of course, it's always funny when the Warriors run a 1-3 pick and roll and Kyrie ends up (not so much) guarding Durant. KD fixed GSW's greatest weakness when he joined, since he's turned into a rim protector who can rebound the ball well on top of everything he did before. He could basically play any position on both offense and defense...
  23. I remember you mentioning the same thing awhile back, but didn't get a chance to do anything until now. I have I2C temperature sensor prototypes working (simple tmp36 to92 devices with ADC for now) and will definitely look into current monitoring as well.
  24. I think if you fall into the trap of trying to beat the Warriors at their own game, it's not going to end well even if you cut down on mistakes because they're the best in the league at playing with pace, forcing and capitalizing on turnovers, team defense, passing, switching, 3 point shooting, etc. They have a lot of great individual defenders, too, but no one can completely lock down Kyrie or LeBron one on one. We may be seeing some slowing down of the game and iso ball from the Cavs before the end of the series, like in the past two years.
  25. Extremely preliminary Dynahi HV. Needs a lot more work, will revisit in a couple weeks
