Yeah, current limiting would be nice as well. These benchtop supplies get really expensive really fast... and then I have to buy an oscope.

guzziguy, if you are going to be DIYing a bunch of stuff after this, it may be a good idea to get a power supply that isn't so limited, which will save you money in the long run. I realize this is way over budget but looks like something I might buy in the future unless I find something better/cheaper: 0-50V @ 3A BENCH POWER SUPPLY-MPJA, Inc. Meanwhile it's time for me to pick up my new soldering station.

I've been having issues myself, lately, and definitely agree on not wanting to take unnecessary drugs. A good friend of mine acted really weird and aloof the short time that he took antidepressants.

What are you driving your K1000 with?
mypasswordis replied to swt61's topic in Headphone Amplification
SET amps with no NFB perform poorly at frequency extremes, so it was still probably output impedance. The SRPP amp also has roughly the same output impedance as SET 300B amps, depending on the transformer windings used. I think when Pete Millett mentions the K1000 needing a low output impedance, he means for a tube amp and mentions that the 7 ohm setting sounds good with the K1000. Fitz's idea of the PCB increasing the high frequency impedance to flatten frequency response makes a lot of sense and I would be very interested in seeing what would happen with OTL and the PCB removed. I won't be the one to first try it out, though. Something about me not wanting to screw around and break the most expensive headphone I have, by far. -

On top of the differences between electrostatics and dynamics, look up slew rate, damping factor, and some waterfall plots. Yes, electrostats do seem worse, at least with the plots I've seen. Might as well look up resonance while you're at it, too. Both free air and differing amounts of closed.

Maybe, though I never understood why anyone would want anything other than flat. As soon as a headphone is out of my tolerances in terms of deviations from flat frequency response I immediately stop caring about it (unless it's moddable like orthos). And if it's something I own, I sell it. Given how much he likes the SR-007 you are probably right. Edit: Thanks Fitz.

Yeah, notch filters shouldn't be messed around with. Makes me wonder why some people thought removing them made it sound better. You have an Ergo AMT? Cooooool. If you don't find one for cheap I can try to bring my Jecklin 'stats and K1000 up to NYC for comparison with your Ergo AMT and Sigma for an ultimate soundstage/Sturzhelm/craziness shootout if you're willing to host. By that time I will probably already have met up with Colin for an O2/K1K comparison so that will be old news.

Oh okay, thanks. Then that means changing the values can alter the frequency response of the drivers, if I ever were to get that fiddly. The graph in the manual says frequency response is completely flat +-2dB from 50Hz to 20kHz and only 4dB down at 40Hz but I don't know if this is with a bass heavy or bass light or other version.

I feel so guilty buying a dynamic after exercising abstinence for so long. I hope my middling serial number (~7000) has lots of bass because I'm going to listen to trance mp3s through them, with the aid of stacked power conditioners and ERS paper. Could someone remind me what the PCB was used for and what effect it had on the sound?

Thanks for the recommendations and the kind offer; it will be awhile until I can afford 1.6s and a matching amp. Sorry to hear about your father, I hope you get to see him soon. Head Case is indeed a great place for anything from light-hearted banter to deep emotional support, which I haven't seen anywhere else.

You should buy his form, and fill in the form just to complain about the form, on the form. And then he doesn't have the rights to use the form anymore.

Helping shovel snow off the driveway was one of the only times I could get out and do something fun in my childhood. And I got called back in pretty quickly. Living far enough south ftw - it rained all of last night and the temps have been rising to a toasty 45 degrees.

I doubt they have finalized the LCD-2 yet but it's common courtesy to at least respond... All your gear makes me jealous, I really want Maggies or some Quad ESLs. I'm only referring to my still growing collection of rare vintage 'stat headphones and a couple of orthos. Just bought a pair of AKG K1000 which is the first dynamic headphone I have purchased in around 2 years, and will see how it compares to my planar headphones.

That is an insane amount of practicing. My school is not at a high enough level that that is the case for us. Even when I lived on campus I did not practice 8-10 hours a day. I usually started around midnight (I had classes pretty much straight up until 8 or 9pm most days) and stopped around 4am. There definitely is a different mindset with musicians, though, in that it really is pretty much a drug for us, and has to be for musicians to be able to get through all that practicing. I myself experienced withdrawal effects this summer when I went "all out" with only 6 hours of practicing a day on average and sometimes took a day or two breaks. And I'm actually not a 'real' music major though I'm getting the degree, since I'm doubling in EE, which is where I spend most of my time. I went home for a quick hour or two yesterday morning just to shower and eat and have "slept" in the same lab for two days straight, trying to get work done. One person practically moved in here the entire first part of the week and just left yesterday night. Yeah I really need to record some Bach now but have very little time. I'm thinking this weekend Sarabande and next weekend Chaconne. Sorry, Marc.

It's really best not to take that advice for myself. But his wallet can probably survive. I think Aman bought one so hopefully I'll get to hear it at the next DC meet.

Sounds good What tubes would you recommend using? Still kind of a noob to toobs. -

So I've been thinking about how to best drive the K1000, and the reports on SETs are promising. I'm thinking if you treat the K1000 driver as a high sensitivity fullrange driver like in Nelson Pass's article, normal SS amps, with let's say an output impedance of 0.2 ohms, will give a damping factor of 600 with the 120 ohm K1000. For increased and better bass response something with relatively high output impedance would probably be preferable, I'm thinking in the < 10 ohm range, which I think is typical of SET amps. However, in Pete Millett's page on his SRPP amp specifically for the K1000 he said OTL designs with a really large output impedance (30-50 ohms) make it sound thin. Thoughts? And I'm not going to be building any speaker amps for awhile due to lack of funds and prefer not to shell out mucho dinero for NOS 300Bs but others might. -
Pretty sure my Yamaha CR-620 will do a better job than a T Amp. Also I'm already planning on opening up the K1000 amp thread for more discussion soon... might as well be now.

Yeah, I was about to say "Someone fetch me a ladder." You're a runaway slave? Who are you running from?

Werd. Except I'm pretty sure it's still not out yet.
