General DAC Questions/Tech Thread
I have to agree with Reks it is the implementation on both the recording (especially mastering) as well as how the playback gear is being implemented. Most disc players and DACs have really lousy output stages. Even some of the big bucks players have pretty mediocre ouput stages.

Amarra "Mini" -- $395
Yep, totally agree. That's why I am in "let's just wait and see mode". I'll probably spring for the Amarra demo after I at least get brave enough to open up the mini and expand it to 2Gb, which I should have done months ago.

Amarra "Mini" -- $395
Well if Amarra is really such a memory hog my old 1Gb Mini used exclusively as a server does not seem to be a good Amarra server. Looks like I will be waiting for the Amarra killer software also.

Compact, medium power speaker amp?
Unless you upgrade the Micro's power supply, then the Monarchy goes into the corner and sulks.

If the A2s are anything like the A5s they will require a little time to settle in. The A5s did not have a midbass bloom but they certainly lacked treble extension and sounded pretty flat at first. After a couple of weeks of normal play for a few hours a day I noticed that they started to sound much better in their dimensional presentation and definitely sounded clearer and more extended in the treble.- Happy Birthday Beefy!
Happy Birthday and welcome to becoming untrustable.- Mac Mini as Music Server
No, itunes and Safari are using 2Gb.- Review: Shanling PH3000
Very nice review. I also agree that the Shanling is a very good, well-built and under-appreciated amp.- Perfect songs.

- What did you do today?
First off Duggeh, Fitz, Brent and Aimless1 I hope you guys have all recovered or at least utilized the appropriate medicinal substances. I participated in seven trials while I was at UGA. Really easy money for the time and risk involved. I thought the same thing until our son was born. Hormones are the most powerful substances on earth and I bow to their power. So I have spent yesterday and today learning about integrative learning. But I did find two excellent restaurants in Atlanta. If you are looking for Sushi you shoulde definitely check out MF Sushi. the MF stands for magic fingers but nevertheless the sashimi was extremely fresh and there Sake list was longer than I have ever seen. An excellent luncheon break. Prior to dinner I hobnobbed at the hotel bar and had two grey goose martinis that were most expertly shaken. For dinner I went to Rick's in the City. I started with a rainbow roll. It was good but not up to MF Sushi standards. However, the She-Crab soup more than made up for the mediocre roll. I went for the bronzed (lightly blackened) Chef's seafood special. It was sea bass and was very fresh and cooked to perfection. All in all a good food day.- Wavelength WaveLink Asynchronous USB to S/PDIF converter.
Hope?- Minimax DAC with ESS Sabre32 chips
Well that's great if your time is worth $0. I do not think the Buffalo32 is overpriced, but then again I have never been accused of being a cheap-ass mofo. I think it is more a comment on the difference in labor costs between the US and the far east. So I guess you should put the popcorn ...... away.- Post the last thing you bought!
Congrats, but I hope you have an awesome tool collection and Mad handymanz skillz. @Dan Some of us have to use Windows because the software we use is supported only possible by because of Corporate America. And for me;- Ye Macce Threade
But not Steve's wardrobe.- Minimax DAC with ESS Sabre32 chips
Yep, totally agree, at that price I absolutely cannot see it having the I/V stage or PSU. I think if you are really clever and can scavenge parts, including a case, you could match that price with a Buffalo, but only if you consider your time worth 0 dollars. Anyway, it looks like it could be a great way to get in on the ESS DAC "bandwagon".- Happy Birthday luvdunhill!

It would be tough (not impossible) to build a Buffalo32 for that.- Mac Mini as Music Server
Yeah, that is what I figured but it almost never hurts to ask.- Mac Mini as Music Server
I use external drives with my mini and I see no advantage to internaal drives for me. They are certainly quiet enough for my office environment plus they are hella lot easier to change out when prices drop. Not sure I want the server one with the heat from two drives in there anyway. Is there an advantage to running snowy-server versus regular snow leopard?- Mac Mini as Music Server
