The older ones worked almost perfectly for mounting 19" racks on the legs too. The new ones don't have enough structure to the legs to do it tho

It's certainly been done by several people in the past. (Not your technique specifically, but removing the drivers) -

I just had a 3tb red drive fail too. I'm sending it back slow boat tho since I already bought a replacement from Amazon.
