  1. You don't wanna work for the weather service. You want to work for the post office
  2. More power to them. I only care about the people I'm trying to hire
  3. I do have a solution. I consider a college degree irrelevant, and don't consider it at all in hiring. And I lament pubically the state of the american university system, and suggest people spend the time they owuld have spent in college in the army or working to learn a trade. Unless they don't need to earn a living later in life, then I suggest they study whatever the hell they want, and milk it as long as they can.
  4. I'll vote for Ron Paul in the primary, and whoever wins for the republicans for president.

I quit reading 1/3 of the way through book 7. I've never quit a series like that before, but damn, that 7th book was complete crap. 800 pages of braid tugging.
  6. My point is teachers jobs are to teach the material, and grade on their ability to do it. If a student can do 200% of what's required, that doesn't mean they get a 100. If they can do the material without flaw, that's 100%. Above that, give extra credit or not, I don't give a shit. If you need a curve to judge, instead of just basing it on measurable criteria, and you're not talking about liberal arts courses, you're doing something wrong. And you're gonna turn out a bunch of overrated morons. And should get fired.
  7. Tommy Thompson...whatever
  8. He could assign points to the problems such that the 50 was 100.

Now that we know hiro is a space alien brought down by his dad to fight gamura, things have really gotten interesting. He gained the ability to turn into an 80 ft tall lizard, in addition to his other talents. So yah, great start to the new season.
  10. Bah, I'm not even the manager for the person being hired I'm just doing some of the interviewing.
  11. The problem, as I see it, all comes down to tenure They can't fire the asshole teachers, so they just inflate their classes' grades
  12. We differ as to whether the school is doing a favor to anyone by doing that. If they like to fuck with students by giving hard exams, that doesn't mean the grading can't reflect that. Bell curves, however, cause people who don't understand the material to get rewarded, and are evil.
  13. Then it's irrelevant how they did on other tests As long as the test out test isn't graded on a curve. I tested out of half of the coursework for computer science in college...it's a shame that's such an irrelevant degree
  14. System administration is never taught in school But anyway, the job isn't a typical admin job, and if you have any interest in supercomputing, or massively parallel computational science, the job has LOTS of interesting directions it could go.
  15. He gets it. Life is not fair. But perhaps they should have had him teaching classes that required more skill, and weren't being taken by morons? If they understand the material, they should be able to demonstrate it on the test. If the test doesn't reflect the material to be understood, then the professor needs to be corrected.
  16. (I'm currently interviewing people to work on my supercomputer, and by and large the candidate pool is incompetent - know any top notch easy to get along with system administration types?)
  17. Perhaps that should be reflected in how the test is graded, and not by using statistical norming? If only 1 person understands the material, the other people in the class shouldn't be rewarded.
  18. That doesn't mean the failing students should pass. Incompetent professors are not a reason to give failing students As. diet pepsi max, to get things back on track
  19. Except that grading shouldn't be done on a curve. Either you learn the material or you don't. Curves are why colleges turn out morons.
  20. Because of AT's tendency to do just that?
  21. 1 asshole who studied and who isn't a moron
