So the strength, and drawback, of the PRS is it's a chameleon. It's a great "do everything" guitar, but for my taste, the magic's in the focussed weirdness. Give me a jazzmaster, or a semi-hollowbody gretsch, or a thunderbird, etc.
I'm not personally a fan of PRSs. I used to be, but they're guitars mostly without character. I'd personally play a bunch of guitars until I found one that spoke to me. Or buy a Gibson ES-335 or similar.
And maybe the style of distortion present in most transducers offsets the flaws in most methods of reproduction. If the source material isn't perfect (and none of it is) then having perfect reproduction of that isn't ideal. If the flaws of one help the other, and vice versa, then that can only be a good thing, unless you're trying to analyze those flaws.
What's the source of that?
I'll say that
1) any standard that has "it must be open" is full of shit,
and
2) any standard that has the HD650 doing worse than the HD700 is also full of shit.
