At work, our systems are starting to move toward using laptop class processors because of the power savings. The GPU could aways be added via thunderbolt and a PCIe chassis if you need them.

Regardless of what class they call it, the mini with the quad 2.6 is still a pretty screaming system.

the quad 2.6 i7 mini seems like a reasonable little system. Dunno if it's fast enough for maths tho. I'm pretty happy with my 2008 mac pro.

apple give the operating system away to people that buy their hardware. if you aren't buying their hardware you haven't bought their software. sure, it's not theft like beer, but it's still theft like speech.
