Indeed, not even remotely close. People are wigging out about the file size, for no obvious reason. A mobile Core i5-2520 has no trouble burning through D800 files. -
Exactly, he was good for a laugh, an that's why it's not the same without him. I did watch some of the Indycars in St. Pete, but I was just left aghast at the way the cars look this season. But at least the sport is generally moving in a better direction than it had been for a long, long time.

Malaysia, wow, what a crazy fun race that was to watch! It wasn't terribly fruitful, from the perspective of a Button fan, but that didn't make it any less entertaining. When is Schumi going to really mix it up with the new generation of champs, and stop getting punted early in the race? It's nice to see Raikkonen out there again. I miss Rubens!

I have an order in. Now when that might become an actual camera is a whole 'nother matter. Not interested in the E version. Some insight into why is well summarized here: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1095136/1 -
I'd be down if I'm in town at that point in time. I'll let you or LFF know.

I was pretty damn skeptical of the D800 when the 36mp rumor really fired up. I just didn't think Nikon would be able to maintain enough pixel-level integrity at that high a MP count. However, it seems this is another big step forward for Nikon, at the forefront of sensor technology. I've played with a number of NEF files, and the performance is pretty stunning. The D800 wipes the floor with the D700 above ISO6400, with a much finer grain structure that retains a lot more detail, in spite of the noise. And of course, the D800's dynamic range and resolution at low ISO is just stunning. Heck, just having a native ISO100 will be nice for me, it's like a free 1-stop ND compared to the D700, and somewhat necessary to fight off the lower diffraction limits. Here's a different take on the resolution question as compared to the 5D3: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/03/d-resolution-tests -
Kentucky can easily screw it up by getting overconfident/cocky, and not taking every last opponent seriously. A sudden injury can change everything as well. None of the final four are pushovers, and if Kentucky thinks otherwise, they've got another thing coming. That said, they were crushing Baylor quite convincingly today

Shot RAW (that's the only way I ever do), adjusted in ACR, converted to B&W in CS5. It was nearing sunset, in a relatively thick forest of 50-100' pines, so light was soft, exposure was 3". I had noticed the waterfall on my hike up to a ridgetop at 9200' to do some rock climbing, and sure enough, when I was headed home, the light was right. -
Well let's just say I might as well be driving a Toyota Hilux, 'cause it's nigh indestructible. One large piece of the oak did land on the car, across the hood, but the outer branches abosrbed most of the impact. As a result, all I've got is a 3" dent in my front fender. Had the car been parked a few feet more forward, the roof would have been caved in.

Here's one of my latest, taken a week ago, in an area that is now under 5-6 feet of fresh snow: -
Spent most of yesterday cutting up the large oak tree that collapsed under the weight of six inches of wet snow on it's fresh spring leaves, nearly crushing my car in the process.

Is the focus confirmation light really that important? I just focus my Rok 35/1.4 by eye. Perhaps that's significantly easier through an FX viewfinder, but it should still be doable on DX. Besides, if your subject is moving, you probably don't have time for the focus confirmation light anyway. I would think that the AF adjust feature might work for this lens to control where the camera considers it to be "in focus", if you really need that feature to work. I say just shoot by eye, practice, and you'll get better than you could believe. -
Happy birthday, Stephen! It's been too long!

Whew, just got home. Had a great time at Russian River today with Mike and Dan, who managed to make it out despite the ear drama. Pictures will be forthcoming.

I've only had one experience with the Sigma 30/1.4. It wouldn't autofocus well at all on a D80, but it worked spot-on perfect on a D700 (even though it's not an FX lens). -
