  1. I'm really getting sick of Google's lack of microSD slots on Nexus devices. I tolerated it on the G-Nex, but it has 32GB internal, why on earth does its' successor have LESS memory, and still no card slot? It's really quite a killjoy on the Nexus 10 as well. I guess they just don't get the notion that some of us would prefer to play our own content, when/where we like, irrespective of the internet connection present (or lack thereof).
  2. That lens is all about bokeh, pure and simple. It has a lot of built-in spherical aberration that makes it inherently softer the the G model or the Sigma, but it has a unique bokeh. If that's what you're after, then you're golden. If it doesn't do it for you, then there's not much reason to keep that lens in your bag, as compared to the other options.
  3. Happy Birthday Marc! I hope it's a great one.
  4. Oh hell yeah! Last night's game was crazy. I'm so jealous Al, but I'm glad you and your family have been able to enjoy the games in person. I will have to make do with gloating at all the Dodger fans I run into down here.
  5. Wow, that's some terribly mainstream looking stuff indeed. None of it is up to snuff with your current logo. I don't see what's wrong with your current one.
  6. No such issues for me, but a combination of dry California, not using them for workouts, and a Pelican case for a home all likely contribute.
  7. Oh yes. D700 files (like that one) are great at 20x30, assuming it's a good shot to begin with. I haven't had a chance to try the D800's capability to print yet, but I'm sure it will be impressive.
  8. Here's one from the 2010 archives, in the Canadian Rockies: Summer Blooms at Emerald Lake
  9. I recently updated my Nook Color to the Alpha of CM10 posted on the XDA forums, and for the first time, I feel it's truly a useful Android device. It's still clearly not that quick, but all the bugs, and a good deal of the slowness present on GB and ICS are gone. I picked it up on a whim for about $100 last year, and have only occasionally toyed around with it, but it's going to get a lot more usage now. Ironically, it might just end up being the oldest/slowest device that will ever see a build of Jelly Bean. Which is too bad, considering there are tons of devices out there with better specs than the 1Ghz SoC and 512MB RAM in the Nook Color, which could benefit tremendously from JB, and have their useful lifespans greatly extended. But I guess that's not really in the financial plans of the powers that be.
  10. Unless something in my universe changes drastically in the next couple weeks, it's not looking very possible for me to make it, as much as I would love to.
  11. Yeah, I think I would have either changed the model numbers, or perhaps added a suffix. I understand why the old versions can't be updated, as it would require a total rebuild. If the changes are as siginificant as some have reported, it seems like they should have somehow changed/tweaked the names, just to avoid confusion. Now everyone will have to mention whether they've got new or old 13's/16's.
  12. Yeah, that is quite a load of shit. It's not a small, enclosed arena, it's a race track for crying out loud. It sounds like they're doing the equivalent of prohibiting tailgating at a football game. And $200 for parking? That's completely insane. As much as I've been a fan of F1 since I was a kid, I hope this race fails miserably from an attendance standpoint, just so that they don't think that they can get away with crap like that.
  13. Thanks everyone, there should be Pliny on tap for later
  14. Best solution for headphone listening is running the multi-channel output to a Smyth Realizer, that's a fantastic sounding setup for DVD-A. Otherwise, I rip the DVD-A's on the PC, and downmix them there, using the right software, you can get a better sounding downmix than the standard DVD-A downmix, in my experience. Look up DVDA Explorer if you want to go that route.
  15. Happy Happy Birthday Vicki, I hope it's a lovely one.
  16. Would have hoped for a better result, but what a time you guys must have had. Nothing like October baseball by the bay!
  17. The G-Nex is a great phone, but I'm not sure that I would want to buy one right now, considering that you'll be locked in to no upgrade until something like June 2014 (for a phone that's nearly a year old). The best looking device out there right now is the Galaxy Note 2, but it's not out yet for Sprint, and if it is one's first smartphone, it might be a bit much.
  18. Fuck. If I weren't stuck in an office in LA, I'd be there for ya.
  19. Yeah, we went through a real rough patch there for a while, but our mutual love of Audio-Technica woodies got us through it
  20. 195 + 1 = 196 Oy, what was I thinking. Right, I wasn't.
  21. Yeah, the high was actually below 80 today, it's getting truly arctic out here
  22. I used my Pico DAC/Amp for at least a year, in exactly that fashion, and never had a problem. The charging light would only ever come on if I had actually used the device unplugged for a period of time, and then returned it to its' normal station at the desk, plugged-in.
  23. I was finally able to get away from our new business, and do some shooting last weekend, just as fall is starting to set in, around the high Sierra. Here's the first of several to come:
  24. I've yet to see a BHSE that I didn't like. That said, the blue on Justin had in LA a couple months ago was extremely cool. ASR's dark gray one is quite nice as well, and for me the choice would probably come down to how well it fit with the rest of your gear/room.
  25. If you want to test your camera for proper focusing, use the method Thom Hogan describes in this article about the D800. While he wrote it specifically about that D800's left focus error issue, it is a very good description of how to properly test a phase-detect system for AF accuracy. http://www.bythom.com/D800autofocus.htm If your camera tests out such that there is a difference between the phase detect and contrast detect (live view) AF, then you either need to try using AF fine tune to get rid of the difference, and the same test setup will allow you to easily dial in the right value. If all of your lenses test out to have a very large offset (say +/-15) that is consistent, then the camera body likely the source of the issues. Also, on these high-end Nikons with many AF sensors, you have to be careful about the AF settings you are using. There are a number of subtle settings that control the AF array, and they can make a critical difference, especially if you are using continuous AF. I recommend reading up on the current Nikon AF systems, either on a Nikon-related forum like FredMiranda or NikonCafe, or the advice of someone like Thom Hogan. If it is not a camera/lens calibration issue, or a camera settings issue, then you might have to start considering the monkey behind the viewfinder.
