  1. I've got a Cambridge Audio 540Av2 powering some 8ohm 88dB kit speakers as part of my modest/main TV/CD/DVD/Xbox setup. The Rec-mon also feeds my Millett Max. It is a very nice little amp for the price and seems to tick most of your boxes. Don't know how it would deal with your sub though - but I presume you could run it from the pre-out just fine.
  2. Interesting. Might not be up to the level of the 840C at that price...... but you'd have to be nuts to get the lower-end 640C now.
  3. Indeed! I'm not aware of any β22's in the area to try out, unfortunately
  4. I can't really help with your questions unfortunately, but........ A fellow Perth-ite? Honolulu perhaps? Or somewhere else?
  5. Elemental physics like they will be doing at LHC always bakes my brain. I'm kind of hoping Jesus falls out of a smashed proton, then gets sucked into a black hole, just to really confuse researchers and theists alike.
  6. Nice start. I tip my hat to you!
  7. *whistles loudly* Show us the solder side!
  8. I don't find cloudy wheat beers particularly crisp. Kristall on the other hand......
  9. There was a teeny bit of discussion about it from here. Possible comparisons to DIY etc; I don't think that there was any real conclusion though
  10. I just love this post: Now nobody needs that of course....... but since when has need ever come into it?
  11. Indeed. A real pilsner and sushi is a great combo.
  12. I just had a post deleted from HeadphoneAddict's thread. I thought it was quite tame as well......
  13. Brilliant. AMB does amazing work.
  14. They have pills for that.
  15. Oh. My. God. How can I possibly respond to that?
  16. Ah man, I'm browsing at this thread at work
  17. Oh, snap. How has he got away with this shit for so long
  18. Drum Tao The show was really great. Huge amounts of energy from the performers, great rhythm, and funnily enough there were drums....... lots of big drums. It was all softened nicely by some traditional wooden flutes and a little bit of koto action. Highly recommended if they come to your town.
  19. MSG is the big one. But realistically, MSG is usually used as a cheap replacement for oyster sauce. Use oyster sauce in stir fries, asian curries etc for a good dose of umame.
  20. *nods* ...... and asks questions. Lots of stupid questions. Even if people get pissed off at you, it is much better clearing things up and getting it right first time round than asking the same questions after you screw things up......
  21. My primary amp........ I have since removed the short circuited turn on the transformer, which to date is my silliest DIY mistake Being in Australia, not the easiest thing to organise and I only have very easy to drive Audio Technica phones. Find someone with some power hungry monsters for a better comparison
  22. Admirable. I hope your venture does well amongst all the bullshit audiophilia. I won't be offloading my MMM to try one though
  23. REVIEW: Purity Audio K.I.C.A.S. Caliente home headphone amp - Page 3 - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio
  24. I'm looking at internal shots of it now on Head-Fi. I suspect that the MMM would have the KICAS for breakfast, and come back for seconds.
  25. The β22 was the project that lured me towards DIY....... but I think it really should be seen as the 'ultimate' build; the destination rather than part of the journey. I ended up starting my DIY audio career with the MMM/σ11 combo and I would be surprised if it doesn't meet your needs. Easier build, less expensive, but still packs a mighty punch. It does use OPAMPs, but they are very well implemented and used only for voltage gain - not driving the phones themselves. Something even more simple and less expensive like a CKKIII is a good option as well, and will outperform commercial amps several times its price. So start with something a bit less demanding, and the β22 will still be waiting for you in a years time......
