  1. Try to focus/frame on a small area, hold the focus, then wait until they come into that area. Much easier than trying to chase them around
  2. It didn't get approved. It was a figment of everyone else's imagination. You'd better take it home before people see it and get confused......
  3. Good read, Asr...... That is really great to hear, and definitely strengthens the consensus about this amp. I'm stoked that I won't be 'missing out' on too much with this amp if I decide to stick with Stax over the long term
  4. Thankfully, nobody gives a fuck what I do at work
  5. Holy shit, I got something right.
  6. The new post search isn't as useful. It no longer cuts off at posts not viewed on your previous visit
  7. I had huge problems with the Swing's precursor, the Arietta, and volume levels that were too high. With a 2VRMS source, even at the minimum volume level on the pot, it was too loud for casual listening with my sensitive AD900. At the time, Goldenjacks were indeed the temporary solution. In the end, I upgraded to a much better amp with a lower gain that solved all my problems. My DIY M3 with a gain of 2 was better in every possible way. Moral of the story? Keep the gain low. And don't buy stupid/weird designs that still put out significant volume even when the pot is at minimum.
  8. Ah, crap!
  9. Top work, Brian. I'm stoked it worked out so well Never mind. Better luck next quake!
  10. Gah! Lack of consensus is bad for Stax noobs like me......
  11. Oooooh, tough call
  12. Maybe Kevin is including the bulge of the keyway?
  13. Well somebody's calipers are out...... I'll increase the size of my cutout a bit regardless, just to be safe.
  14. I asked this question in the Stax thread, trying to do my panel with Marc's jacks...... apparently, the biggest Stax plugs are 18.5mm in diameter.
  15. If the volume goes to max, then you will get clipping. Work it out...... assume a standard 2VRMS source, which works out to 5.6V peak to peak. A Dynalo should be able to push 15V P-P. So at 0dBfs, you can can clip at a gain of just 3. Which is fantastic, until they come back to earth, and realise that more than 3/4 of the range of the pot is useless.
  16. Found out I'm giving an oral presentation to a big conference in New Orleans in May. Huzzah! Submitted an important grant application. Huzzah! I now have very little to do for the rest of the day. Huzzah!
  17. Yeah, I'm pretty sure nobody wants that...... Though if it is indeed cobalt, probably Co-60, it should be fairly inert by now having gone through almost 5 half-lives.
  18. Working at a univeristy (a chemistry department no less) tends to afford people the ability to obtain interesting items. I was once sent a catalogue that offered wild type anthrax for sale. So long as the order came from a licensed institution (which we were) I could have bought it.
  19. Auction it off!
  20. I actually sent a follow-up email to Yamas to ask for more prices, and didn't get a reply for a few days. But today, I actually got a phonecall at work (my number is in my email sig) from 'Tats', confirming the extra parts I wanted, discussing my Lambda's, and him recommending against my trying to replace dust covers due to the high chance of failure. I think the difference was that I actually sent my original email to the service department, 'Accutech' rather than the generic Yamas email address. They might butcher a pair of phones every now and again, but seem to be genuinely interested in helping people
  21. Just a good natured ribbing. I'm in biomedical research, and rather dislike talking about my work at most social occasions. People's eyes just glaze over. I can only imagine it is much, much worse for mathematics research...... That's the spirit!
  22. I bet you're a hit at parties
  23. Nice guy, but I wouldn't buy it.
  24. All civilization is just an effort to impress the opposite sex... and sometimes the same sex.
  25. Thanks
