  1. You know, I was taught -- at a very simplistic level -- that they are more or less orthogonal: diesel is better for distance, hybrid is better for stop-and-go. But really, it takes very little stop-and-go to be better than just plain gas, and I have no idea where the break-even point is between hybrid and diesel, but as was pointed out -- with diesel prices being so much higher than regular gas prices, diesel isn't a clear choice in what seems like a distance drive. A cousin of mine lives near Dulles airport in Virginia and commutes to Washington, DC 5 days a week; he has a hybrid. He does just enough stop start on his way to work to keep the mileage up -- it's not just the breaking that gets converted to energy, the very act of having the motor feed the battery and then running off the battery is inherently more efficient than running directly off the motor all the time. It's like buffering bits.
  2. Unless the electric-diesel hybrid sees the light of day, my next car is in most likelihood either a VW Golf/Rabbit/whatever, Jetta Sportwagen, or an Audi A3. (Diesel -- I'm hoping they come in diesel.) Or maybe the Tiguan.
  3. Yeah, a lot of the auto manufacturers are coming out with the next generation of clean diesel within the next couple of years: BMW, Honda, and of course, VW and Audi. There are others, but I forget right now. EDIT: Mercedes, I think, and Nissan, Toyota, Ford (of course), and GM (of course). Ah. (Regular gasoline cars take more fuel starting than running...for less than a minute [roughly]. More than a minute, and it becomes worth it, gas-wise, to stop the car and restart it. I presume by this that you mean, with diesels, that time limit becomes much longer, as in, long enough to fill your tank [10 minutes or so, with foam].)
  4. Dong wrong.
  5. Based on 20 seconds worth of sound samples, I'm guessing: Julee Cruise, Devics, maybe Lisa Germano, Lori Carson, Nicole Blackman? ...I even hear some Nancy Sinatra (circa her collaborations with Lee Hazelwood). (Thanks for the pointer, I'm definitely getting it.)
  6. Well...you're wearing black, I guess that's formal.
  7. How does that save cash?
  8. And then there's the Diesel/Hybrid hybrids. VW has gone back and forth between whether or not they're going to market them in the states (they think they'll be too expensive for it to be worth their while to sell them here). I think they're wrong (especially if gas prices don't come back down).
  9. Y'all look the same to us down here -- cold in the winter, desirably nice in the summer, pretty fall colors, spring is okay. In answer to the original question, I'd love to come up and meet you guys and hang out and listen to tunes and provide some of my own, just as I would have loved to have gone down to Florida for that meet, but life priorities and Crazy 8 Ball say, "seems unlikely".
  10. 840c? Good luck getting it for under a thousand, though. Oh, and before anyone else beats me to it: FOTMFOTMFOTMFOTMFOTM... More seriously, how about an Apogee Mini-DAC, if you don't want to go Mac?
  11. Hamburger, dusty-style (onions & garlic on a George Foreman grill)
  12. Thanks for the impressions, more when you feel like it, please.
  13. You know, some guys joke that if they were given a pussy, they'd just spend the entire day stroking it all day and playing with it and petting it. I found out that it's true, as that's what I did. I llluvz mah llittol kitteh.
  14. Yeah, but I bet your "swing from vine" score is even higher.
  15. Yeah, I saw that. At that price, not even tempted.
  16. Hey! That was a long time ago, and I was drunk.
  17. It sounds like a mash-up...a not-good mash-up.
  18. I have allergies, and I have allergies pretty bad, but I've never had anything like this. My condolences. I would almost go so far as to say that that doesn't sound like a typical allergic reaction. Next time it happens, take pictures, and bring them with you to an allergist (or at least your general practitioner). It does sound like a reaction of some sort, just not necessarily an allergic reaction. (I got corrected on this about something similar by my allergist, recently.)
  19. I like my Wheatfield because it's a different "house sound" than the Singlepower; I think they complement each other nicely. Welcome to the Pete Millet fanclub.
  20. Symbol, Talk Normal, Beeping Sleauty, and Mikroknytes -- I missed Beeping Sleauty, but enjoyed everyone else. They ranged from no-wave to experimental improvisation. I dug.
  21. 38. Meh. I could survive here if I wanted to (and did, when I felt like it) -- a grocery store, pharmacy, and small collection of restaurants are right around the corner. No book stores, movies, concerts, or music stores, though, so I guess they're right. Especially if you're into pens.
  22. Alright, I went back to Pilin and had dessert there specifically because of this thread, and yes, the custard is served cold on warm rice. It was divine.
  23. Yeah, a friend of mine recently played that for me. I was (totally blissed out)^2. Second only to Just for a Day in terms of bliss factor. (Not really comparable, except for my reaction to both of them.)
  24. Dusty finds that video cameo-meme-ilicious!!!1!
