Catscratch -- you pretty much nailed it on the head with the bass, that was the first thing I noticed. I mostly agree with what you said about recordings, though, being a basshead, I'd go one step further -- when I want that midbass hump, I'd reach for the Mk 2's, and when I don't, I'd reach for the Mk 1's. "Rocking out" comes to mind as to when I'd want it. Kind of makes me wonder how they'd respond to EQ...

Maybe if they had some full-range drivers in there I'd be more interested...as it is, no.

One more: Xiang Sheng 708b -- finally managed to figure out how to bid with this one merchant -- they had it set up so that my PayPal account had to be associated with my eBay account, which I had never encountered before, so it wasn't, but now it is, and I remembered to bid (yeah yeah, I know, use software -- I purchase on eBay so infrequently that it's not an issue), so now it's mine. Here's to hoping it arrives in working condition. And no, I don't need another headphone amp, I'm actually going to be using it as a preamp. Until I can get a Conrad-Johnson or whatever.

And I will be the first to admit that's bad, and I completely sympathize with people who have been screwed over by the process, but at least it's not as bad as disappearing with everyone's money. I'm sounding like an apologist, but it's because I'm answering your question. Please note the "I wouldn't do business with him" comment -- that should say it all.
