How has your rig changed in 2008? And do you have any plans for 2009?
I have two separate systems -- one for shiny disks, the other for the computer (and a third speaker system) -- just at my office. "Systems" is such a transient word for me.

Post the last thing you bought!
Nice. Now you need to buy a pair of Mk 2 pads...

What did you do today?
I can't imagine a lawyer would want to get mixed up in a bootleg house.

CNET's Greatest Headphones
If you liked them, then yes, they were. I think the D5000 -- other than build quality issues -- is a completely under-rated phone. I remember liking it, and have heard nothing since then to convince me otherwise.

Leaving potrable hifi - it's too silly
That's too bad, entertainment value was priceless. I'm not arguing against the perma-ban -- the "renewing" account was definitely perma-ban worthy.

What are you listening to Part Two
Hey Zorn fans -- anyone heard any of the Book of Angels series of recordings? Various artists play from the Zorn songbook, including the one that intrigues me the most, Medeski Martin & Wood. Assume I, for the most part, don't like Zorn. Is this sufficiently Zorn-like that I will want to pass on this as well?

Thanks! I'm actually serious about the earrings -- the headphones are comfortable with both of those on?

Best place to shop for monitors?
Okay, I need a new television as well, so I'm probably going with the Gateway XHD-3000 (or the Dell 3008FPW). Those are really the only two options, because they're the only ones that have internal scalers, and I know of no scalers that will produce DVI-D (Dual DVI). Any other contenders or options I should be considering?

Anyone else having a flu...
Right, but isn't that the way they do it now? Isn't that the way they've been doing it for years? I sincerely ask the question -- not questioning you, questioning the industry. I have a friend in the FDA, I'll ask him.

Bunch o' Rachel's Yesterday it was the Matmos split; earlier it was Selenography, currently Handwriting is wrapping up.

What's up with dynafet boards these days?
Besides, here's a picture of Shiina Ringo punching through a sheet of (admittedly probably fake) glass: Does that even make sense? Does you suing me make sense? Does "Pfff" make sense? Does anything make sense? Ladies and Gentlemen of the supposed jury, I declare that if Chewy lives on the planet Endor, you have to acquit. The defense rests.

I used the entirely different "Pfff". Are you so megalomaniacal as to believe you own the patent to all words that start with "pf"? What are you going to do about Pfefferneusse, are you going to sue the entire country of Germany, as well as all American housewives of German descent? You're in for a world of hurt. I declare "fair use".

Weird USB Audio Problem
I second this -- at least as something to try, it'll help isolate (ahem) the problem.

But that's just the analog model of a digital world. From the computer's perspective, it doesn't know 2.2V from 2.27 -- all it knows is "1". It's the classic image of converting an analog signal to a digital one that I'm thinking of, the one where it assigns a number to a value at a certain point in time. You're not sympathizing with the computer, I don't think. I mean, in digital transmission, ones and zeros are usually represented by transitions between two values, not even a constant state value. It's not how it's represented that is important, it's the fact that they are discretely-stepped, discretely-timed values that's important. It's entirely an abstract concept. I mean, even when you digitize (and back), one always has to take into account the limitations of whatever digitization process (or back) was used, to accurately re-render the analog signal.

But it needs to be zero, it can't just be undefined. It's not discrete -- it's continuous. I mean, it's really not zero, it's A/C with a DC offset in that example.

Actually, that makes a lot of sense -- one of the first things I'd want to do (besides take a shower) is to do my laundry.

I'll have to get back to you on that. You'll excuse me if I don't take wikipedia as a canonical reference for that kind of information, but the use of examples makes me think that there might be something to it (DNA is, indeed, intuitive). But I think there's more to it than just "discontinuous units", but also how they're used. My power example is discontinuous units; but in KG's power example, the power needs to be there the entire time for it to work -- the "form of square wave" is a red herring.

Weird USB Audio Problem
Yeah, but if there's noise on the line from the computer, wouldn't the electrical connection "conduct" it through the source to the amp?

I am. And that's digital...how? A square wave is just as analog as a sine wave. I mean, define your terms. What is "digital"? It's not just pulse width modulation, or PCM or DSD or even hysteresis loops (analog tapes had to overcome hysteresis even when recording and playing back in analog), it's taking time-sliced samples of an analog signal and then representing them as numbers in a model. A true digital power source would be a zero value, followed by a half period-cycle of undefined value, followed by a zero-length timeslice of full-on, follwed by a half period-cycle of undefined value, followed by full off again (assuming two-stage values -- or perhaps it'd be "full on" followed by negative "full on"...whatever). Digital has no analogue in the real world, it's just a way for computers and other digitally-based storage media to convert continuous values into discrete numbers that are contiguous without being continuous. So I repeat, don't give me these "what if" scenarios without defining your terms. (And yes, I'm having just as much fun with this as you are.) (waves a shovel in Jacob's general direction)
