Whoa. I just heard something I've never heard before: at 3:27 of "Why So Serious?" from the Dark Knight soundtrack, there are some bass throbs that are practically subterranean. I've got it set at 25% (-32db). Seems to be a good place (gain), plus it's a power of two, so the computer isn't taxed at doing the maths.

When I said, "it's not even my house", what I meant to say was, "I don't want to listen to it, much less subject my headphones -- expensive or otherwise -- plus a house that's not even mine -- to the (admittedly unknown) dangers". I'm not worried about fires, I'm worried about the unknown. If I had more confidence in him as an engineer, then I wouldn't; but I don't, so I do.
