  1. I constantly confuse Jim White and Joseph Arthur. And now that you mention Leonard Cohen, I hear that, too. Don't know what you're talking about on the other part, though. It's not part of any album, if that's what you mean -- it was a standalone single. I'll have to hear some Mark Lanegan...
  2. Looks photoshopped.
  3. You know those songs that you can listen to at any time? And pretty much as soon as you think of it, you kind of have to? This is one of those songs.
  4. Well, (a) he already had some Schubert on his list, and ( he was talking about chamber music, and I consider Schubert to be the king of chamber music, so I thought it was a safe suggestion. It also doesn't sound as romantic as much post-Beethoven composers do, so still "sounds" pre-Beethoven.
  5. [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Schubert-Piano-Alternative-Movement-Video/dp/B0000503W5/ref=sr_1_3]Amazon.com: Schubert: Piano Trio, Op. 100 (with Alternative Movement) [Video DVD]: Franz Schubert, Trio Italiano: Movies & TV[/ame] 24/96, + one of my more favorite performances of it, and easily my favorite piece of chamber music ever.
  6. Was reading the HD800 review in Hi>Fi+, here are a few excerpts: Don't agree with the second one, which is why I quoted it. The Stereophile review also claims it's easy to drive, and they only measure the impedance (not even the frequency response). I'm tempted to write John Atkinson, since he probably has the ability to measure it correctly.
  7. I think I got a little wood out of that description.
  8. So the smoky earpiece is "translucent black"? I actually think the head-case logo turned out great.
  9. Definitely start with Segovia (my favorite) and Bream (Jacob's favorite, I believe).
  10. Yes, thanks.
  11. Not doing this to feed your paranoia, just being realistic -- there is no way they're going to be able to get that amount of detail on the earpieces. I would ask.
  12. To be fair, I suspect it's pronounced "nigh" (as in the first syllable in Nigeria) "gas" (as in, well, gas, which is what gazprom is based on).
  13. I want to say I heard Hirsch's rendition once -- stevieo owns it now, so if we can get him to actually post, he can talk about its sound quality. I have the ASL unit, and was pretty much underwhelmed. Perhaps I should open it up and take pics? I suspect the sound quality is entirely dependent on the quality of the transformer.
  14. I grew up on Henry Mancini -- especially the Pink Panther soundtrack and this version of much of his music done by 101 Strings (I think). In high school, I was famous for Henry Mancini and Black Sabbath being my two favorite acts.
  15. But theoretically, you could do the same sort of thing (present loads between the two sides to ground, then run another resistor in series with the headphones), right? In fact, in that case, you'd run the two sides of each headphone against each other and not to ground.
  16. So if Jin and Dinny got together and created a David Bowie tribute band, would you call yourselves Djinn Djinny? :rimshot:
  17. Maybe not that simple? EDIT: Meaning, "perhaps a bit more specific?"
  18. But will he be a fast zombie or a slow zombie? You mean, like Agent Bourne?!?!? Or a witness in a witness protection program? But it's not like they could perform any plastic surgery.
  19. I'm going to write all my pseudo-code in LOLspeak LOLcode.
  20. Hey, Stephen, did you see today's Uneetee? Orange and penguin + astronaut == made me think of you. Alright, not the astronaut part.
  21. Maazel was fine, moving on to Jarvi's Berlioz (Symphonie Fantastique). I'm beginning to think the clicks might be specific to some players, so maybe one should mention what player they're using when they hear the clicks. And if any of them are repeatable, state the specifics. Here's my Telarc collection (or a subset): SACD-60578 Jarvi Berlioz SACD-60598 LAGQ Guitar Heroes SACD-60601 Jarvi Ravel SACD-60615 Jarvi Stravinsky/Nielsen SACD-60623 van Alphen Grieg Dvorak Elgar SACD-60624 Mozart Flute Concertos/"Jupiter" Symphony 2SACD-60628 Mahler Lieder/Symphony No. 1 Zander SACD-60636 Runnicles Mozart Requiem SACD-60647 LAGQ Spin SACD-60655 Slatkin Bizet/Grieg/Rimsky-Korsakov/Satie/Borodin SACD-60670 Jarvi Rach Symph. SACD-60681 Jarvi Tchaikovsky SACD-63558 Hiromi Another Mind (+ everything else she's done) SACD-63576 McCoy Tyner - Land of Giants CD-83469-SA Monty Alexander - Stir It Up + the ones I've listened to recently.
  22. Thanks for that, the only ones I've tried so far are Crimson and Crimson II. atothex -- yeah, that's why I specified their first album. Their second I love, but for entirely different reasons (and out of nowhere -- synthpop!). It's not tech death. And yeah, I understand "oddball" -- that's exactly what I love about it.
  23. Demo'd this week's version of the software I've been working on. Went well, was refreshingly not "by the skin of my teeth" (I had it done last night).
  24. Really? You mean, besides the first Cynic album, or don't you like that one? I'm with you on not finding enough of it that I like. And yeah, if you find stuff you like, definitely post about it, because I have to admit, I've been going through longer and longer phases of not playing death entirely because of the vocals. I even got tired of Gojira, mostly because of the lyrics. I should say, I really liked Aardvark Baguette's recommendation of Edge of Sanity. That was fun. It's appreciated that they threw in some keyboards in there. I can't even think of anything else I listened to recently that's worthy of mention in this thread. I have been revisiting some older stuff: Therion, Sabbath (entire catalog, not just Ozzy and Dio stuff), Nightwish, Epica, Gathering, Swallow the Sun.
