  1. You're wrong. And you're lying. If you really don't give a fuck, ask yourself this question -- why do you feel obliged to reply?
  2. The last bastion of the bad debater -- "I could have won this argument, I chose not to."
  3. Thanks for all the info, everyone. To the color scheme: yeezh!
  4. Will someone with familiarity in the subject area please break down the difference(s) between these three? I was going to just get the 970, but it doesn't have the Faroudja chipset -- how important is this? Someone on another forum said the 981 is supposed to be a replacement for the 971, but takes away the Faroudja chipset (I think he meant the 970, because the 981 explicitly has the Faroudja chipset). This is what I get: 970 -- entry level 971 -- Faroudja chipset 981 -- 1080p Or are there other important differences? I will be using it with this, amongst other things. I am interested in sound, especially SACD and DVD-A, as I can always use an outboard DAC to improve redbook.
  5. Unholy carp, dude! So the answer is yes, you do live on a sod farm. Effectively -- even if you don't sell the sod...
  6. Okay, I looked up the frequency response of the Grado GS1000 on Headroom -- it appears to be a large spike and a large dip (and the dip appears to be in a "normal" range in which a lot of headphones have a dip), but I could swear I hear another (large) peak and dip below the measured one. And Tyll -- why are there two DT880's? Is one of them the more recent one? They appear to measure pretty much exactly the same on all four graphs...
  7. I like EveAnna Manley a lot. And it doesn't come in pink because she's a hellraiser. Pink is for wussies. No, seriously, there's nothing wrong with pink, but if you look at the Manley line, there's a certain industrialism to its ethic, pink would kind of not fit in. She doesn't make very "girly" gear -- her stuff "rawks". Um...it's an "original Chalkism", if you're referring to the idiocy/justification statement. It may have been said before, but I never heard it -- I was just responding to the apparent dichotomy (to me, anyway) in his argument. Oh, and Benjy -- nice retort. (raises his glass of sarcasm in toast) Cheers!
  8. I don't think it's just one spike, I think there's a small mountain range in the frequency spectrum. Maybe even the letters M and/or W, possibly a whole word. At least, to my admittedly amateurish ears. I'd be curious how they measure.
  9. Or maybe in a yard with a lot of trees. And I mean, a lot of trees.
  10. If it's justifiable, it's not idiocy.
  11. What is your problem? An iPod is a damn fine source, as long as you use the line out. I'm not saying it's on the order of Wadia or Meridian, but it's pretty good... If I had an iPod, I'd amplify it with my Manley. As far as I'm concerned, if you haven't heard the combo, this is just mindless prejudice. Idiot, indeed.
  12. Headroom or Headamp.
  13. I wanna go back to the booby stage.
  14. Well, if it's any consolation, I want them really really badly. I was already planning on getting a pair before you got yours, but at the time, I thought I was going to be trying them out -- now I'm pretty sure I'm going to be just plain enjoying them.
  15. Hey, when did you join? You the guy making me want to get a pair of 4070's? What did you do to yours?
  16. Yes, get an iPod. In fact, if it's for exercise, you hardly need any interface at all, I would think that an iPod Shuffle would be optimal for those circumstances. You could also get a cheap CD player, yes. Current flavour of the month is the Oppo universal player at < US$200. I wouldn't get a portable -- I'm not even sure those exist any more, and if they do, they suck (that I've heard). I actually like my ER-6i's straight out of the player with no amp (in my case, I have a Creative Nomad Jukebox 3). I don't believe in getting an amp just for the sake of getting an amp, it needs to have sufficient improvement over the headphone jack for me to want one. I've only ever heard one "mint", and when it worked it sounded fine, but it also sounded fine straight out of the headphone jack. Now the Shure's need an amp. I don't know about the Etymotic ER-4p's, though. It is my understanding that they shine the most with an amp, but I've heard very few impressions of them unamped. Maybe ER-4i's...? I've never tried the ER-4...anything, but I know it's in an improvement over the ER-6...anything. I'd be curious if I'd like the ER-4i unamped. Your best bet is to get an amp from a company that will allow returns -- say, Headroom. You end up paying more than for a cmoy, but you get quality control, customer service, warranty, an upgrade path in most cases, &c. Oh, and in terms of sites -- this one will do fine. You asked the right questions, the problem is your overwhelmed with the number of things you have to take care of (source, amp, headphones). No site is going to fix that, only a methodical approach will do. And don't be afraid to ask all at once (like you did), your choice in one area affects your options in another.
  17. It strikes me as DualDisc all over again.
  18. Why would it sound like poo? Ignore him... Be very careful. Other than that, no, but I'd be interested in what you end up getting. I see no reason to have a limit on optical, other than the fragility of glass... EDIT: Just thinking out loud, look into optical network cable.
  19. Note avatar. I basically don't watch television. Every once in a while, I'll pass by when my housemate is watching, and I'll get sucked in. Got sucked in for several hours over the weekend, but I was sick and didn't feel like getting up, don't know what her excuse was...she keeps considering getting cable, I really hope she doesn't. I'll probably get sucked in by concerts on M2 and stuff, but I told her, since I watch 1/10th of what she watches, I ain't payin' for it, so it's entirely up to her to get it... Now...DVDs, that's something else entirely...I love watching those... Oh, and: Ditters, more or less (back when I was addicted to television around 1999 or so, I watched more television than surfed the internet, but if I were to get addicted again, I'd probably surf more than watch television).
  20. Yes, you did. I mean, let me rephrase... Don't think of it as a holier-than-thou-music-lecture, think of it as my take on things -- I been there, myself, man, I was getting bored with my listening system, I thought it was too austere...then I said, "fuck it, I feel like listening to some headbanging music", and I was in bliss again. I was just trying to help out -- perhaps point out something you hadn't realized. Don't get all hoighty-toity on me.
  21. If you're bored with the music you listen to, listen to less boring music. Don't blame the headphones.
  22. Hey, TheSloth, did you see that they revamped the Quad site? Looks like they've reintroduced the active series, and they're introducing an upgrade on the L series, the L2 series. I wonder if they're going to do away with the L series? I hope not...
  23. Bah, Humbug! No, wait, that's Christmas... Happy New Year!
  24. But...but...but...they're in series! That makes it twice as good, right?
  25. Nice. I really like the look of the Quad L series speakers. I've seen that Bird's Eye finish in person, and it really is nice.
