  1. It's like postjack 1602. You been reading Marvel 1602?
  2. I disagree with this entirely. Redbook and SACD and high-rate PCM are just different. I don't care what sort of processing you do to them, I have yet to hear SACD rendered moot. That said -- I wouldn't worry about getting a disc player at all unless it had more than just redbook capability -- if you're only concerned about redbook, I'd get a media-server type computer and a nice external DAC. But I believe in the shiny, so that's why my recommendations were what they were.
  3. Yeah, but then you rule out SACD and/or DVD-A. Denon 3910, modded by perhaps SACDMods (I'm extremely happy with mine) Ayre C-5xe (MSRP US$5995 -- used should be less) Linn Unidisc SC (MSRP US$4995) McCormack UDP-1 (MSRP US$3495) deluxe Conrad-Johnson version (MSRP US$3995)
  4. It's one of the few that I have...my first, in fact. It's very good, you should see it.
  5. Yeah, but then you wouldn't have the L3000.
  6. That concept rocks my fool head off.
  7. Oh, okay, I could see how you could read it that way...face value...
  8. I lust after them, but I have to admit to never having heard them. I've heard the following: in the early editions with the Beryllium tweeter, they just put a Beryllium tweeter on the old box. With the newer ones, they re-engineered the crossover to compliment the tweeter more. Unfortunately, I do not know where that dividing line is. EDIT: no, wait a minute, I did hear one pair -- either the novas or the divas or something -- their entry level pair in the Utopia line -- they were divine. It only had three drivers and a very slender footprint. Unfortunately, it was north of US$3K, and was more than I was willing to spend at the time. If I had known how cheap of a price the salesperson was quoting me, I woulda bought them in a heartbeat and flipped 'em.
  9. Yeah, I tried a couple different sources, and all of them said that AT requires them to bring in the headphones. They at least need a serial number.
  10. Impossible, without the headphones. I've tried. They've since required you to send in your headphones to get repaired, I.E. they will not sell the drivers without the rest of the headphones.
  11. Oh, I thought you meant the powered monitors they offer. I've heard good things about them, but as far as I know, they have no US presence. link
  12. No, gay men love hard wood.
  13. I've seen them on audiogon, though admittedly very infrequently. Uh, I understand about being hesitant -- but some dealers are just in-store kind of people, or phone kind of people. I would be hesitant to do business with them over the internet, but you might try calling them or visiting them.
  14. Aw, dude, that's fucked up. link Email, ask who you have locally that would sell them to you?
  15. Yeah, good times.
  16. I stand corrected. I knew it didn't make sense, but had a brain fart as to what was correct.
  17. Yes they do.
  18. What JMLabs monitors are in that price range, and where would one get them? Yeah, those Adams sound delish with those ribbon tweeters. And that's probably a really good suggestion, as studio monitors are usually designed for nearfield listening. But that's only if the Galante Rhapsodies don't work out for you, which I'm sure they will.
  19. Let us know when you get them.
  20. It's spelled, 'adieu', you non-French-speaking-Merkin, you.
  21. Really?!?!? Wow, that's telling.
  22. I'm in. What was the name of the movie again? /me goes back and looks
  23. I'm currently reading the books (on the last one) -- highly recommended if you're into dark fantasy at all. Some of the best reading I've had in a while. You're welcome to borrow my copies if you can get them back to me by September (I want to lend them to my sister when she's here)...or you're welcome to borrow them after. She's a quick reader (and voracious, so she'll probably be done with them by October).
  24. Possibly. I had issues when I did this. I was using a Singlepower Supra++ (old school chassis as well) -> Musical Fidelity A300 power amp (whose gain is insanely high) -> Dynaudio Special 25's (full-range speakers), and I got this bass clicking -- had something to do with being full range drivers; sounded like tubes expanding when warming up. It wouldn't do it on Hirsch's bookshelves, but it did do it when we tried to use it on a subwoofer of his. Hirsch contacted Mikhail about this, and determined the "problem", part of which was that it wasn't intended to be used as a preamp. Mine is an early model, as is yours, so yours could have the same problem. There is a fix for it. It has something to do with the power supply. I would contact Mikhail about it -- he should know if yours was before or after this or not. It's not a fault of the amp's, I should emphasize -- I believe the ones with a preamp out do not have this problem at all. It might just be a DC filter on the output, but I honestly don't remember. I never "fixed" it on mine, as I got rid of the amp (money crunch) before I had a chance to investigate it.
