Watched Event Horizon (excellent horror flick -- kind of weird, but on the plus side, unexpected) -- definitely somewhat bad, but successfully scary -- and Samurai Chicks -- low-budget (not just straight-to-video, but shot on video) fun.

I disagree -- and this coming from someone who's usually a MF fanboy -- I quite liked its form factor and its transport section, but the DAC section just sounded congested to me. It's almost like they dumbed down one of their higher-end CDP's, (or the upgrade DAC that was out at the same time), just so that they wouldn't compete with themselves. That said, it, with an external DAC (Bel Canto? Audio Alchemy? isn't the ACk dACk!? half-width?) that would also be half-width could be very nice. There was another one, but I'm not remembering it right now.

I have to admit, I didn't like MatLab the first time I tried it (early oughts), but the second time I tried it (two years ago?), I was sold. It's really gotten quite nice.

No, but Dave (dave1) had one, and I got to listen to it extensively -- almost bought it, but it fills a weird niche -- one that I don't have unfilled. Basically, I went one step up to the SRS-3010. Also, they're open, which doesn't interest me. The SRS-3010 allowed me to get a new Stax amp that I could eventually use with my 4070 (which I still don't have, either).

Stax SR-001 Mk II -- I disagree with the other opinions here, it's surprisingly good, and is actually competitive at its price point for a complete headphone/amp system.

"contenders"...I suspect): Nightwish, Dark Passion Play November's Doom, Novella Reservoir Paradise Lost, In Requiem Samael, Solar Soul Dark Tranquility, Fiction Mnemic, Passenger Amorphis, Silent Waters ...the usual qualifications -- I have by no means heard all metal titles, so leave open the ability to add to and/or change my list for years to come.

I haven't found a local dealer that carries Nixon yet. I've tried the various ski shops that their locator reveals, and they're all either closed, or they're farther than I've had a chance to go yet. That said, I'll probably buy an all-black "Rocker" sight unseen, and move up from there. And I'm also going to ask my housemate's sister whether or not she ever goes into Barney's (she lives in NY).
