Bumping up an old topic. So yeah, after reading repeatedly how nice the JPN's and the VTG's are, I'm passively in the market for them (although it has to coincide with my having money, of course, which I currently don't), but was wondering if anyone has any additional thoughts on this, now that the a900ti and a950ltd are out...? Are they in the running, or are they more in W2002/W100 territory, or "other"? Currently, I use the CD3000 as sort of a poor-man's L3000, as, until I get them recabled (the L3000's, that is), I am really unhappy with the midrange suckout. I'm actually tempted to put in an EQ. The Sony's certainly don't have the same delivery of transients that the Audio Technica's do (can you say, "smoov"?), but since I'm not doing critical listening, they are perfectly adequate for passive work listening. I'm tempted to just get a pair of each and decide for myself. They are black (the A500 and the A950ltd are, anyway, even if the a900ti is not), after all, and closed, the former of which is not a criteria, but certainly a plus, and the latter of which is definitely a criteria.

I have a hard time justifying upgrade power cords. I mean, c'mon, have you seen the shit that's in your walls? Chain is only as strong as its weakest link, etc. As long as it is not so bad as to make things worse, I have a hard time seeing how it could be better. And I certainly couldn't hear the difference, the one time I tried.

And we hear it, and we wear insult like badge on sleeve. Over there in communist Russia, one risks being silenced or perhaps much worse consequences. So we wave flags a little more strongly, yes? Do you really blame us? Yes, it gets a bit redundant, only because we continue to give people like Billy and tyrion and trose the freedom to keep stirring shit up. Dude And although I started out using disk images, I switched to invidual tracks in the long run, as it made it easier to convert to MP3's non-destructively (I.E. now my backup doubles as a source for my MP3 player). Using individual tracks, you don't need to fall back to MP3's, you can use FLAC or some other lossless compression format.

I'll second the Firebird Suite recommendation.

The only potential problem -- and this should be overcome by most modern transports -- is that you have a higher error rate on the copy than on the original. This depends on two things: the error rate on the original, and the error rate on the copy. Measure both, and you'll find out for yourself which is better. Funny thing: if the error rate on the copy is less than the original, you actually have a small probability of improving the fidelity upon copy. Actually, one more problem -- on some CD's, good luck on getting 100% accuracy. I got so impatient with that, that I settle for 98.6% accuracy (or so -- I forget the exact number). Also, it might be cheaper and more time-efficient to back them up onto external hard drives. Then all you have to do is rip, not burn. You can always burn them later.

Me and Hirsch have seen it too -- I enjoyed it, I forget whether or not Hirsch did, I think he did. Neither of us liked Man with Two Brains too much.
