  2. Because your criteria for balanced is only half the story. Yes, tying the negative signal to the other terminal is part of it, but they must both be relative to ground, and since most dynamic driver speakers and headphones don't have a ground, it can't be done. Only electrostatics can be truly balanced. Remember, it's just a potential difference, if you float the ground, then you've lost the stable reference for the common noise on the line. I'm not saying it's bad -- faux-balanced is still an improvement over completely single-ended, but to call it balanced is not entirely correct. I realize I'm being pedantic, but that's not the same as being wrong.
  3. Too many to list: The entire cookie speech; the "Dawn's in trouble; must be Tuesday" line; this exchange: Buffy: Okay. Um ... how about the expression, 'Vampire slayer'? Vamp: What the hell you talkin' about? Buffy: Wow. Never heard that one. Okay. How about, 'Oh god, my leg, my leg'? The Vampire growls and lunges at her. She ducks his grab, punches him in the face and kicks his leg. His knee buckles and he falls to the ground. Vamp: Oh god! My leg! Uhh... Just for starters.
  4. My Pioneer automatically stops spinning the disk after some ridiculous amount of time (10 minutes, I think). When it's in resume mode, you hit play, and it picks up right where you left off. You definitely need something like that. It'll continue playing a movie if you are playing a movie, but I don't know what'll happen if you put it in infinite repeat mode, I've never done that. I don't know if that's an issue with you or not. I don't think it's spinning the disk if it's just the menu loaded. You should listen to it with a stethoscope.

Geh. People buying speaker setups == FTW People selling their excellent headphones to fund their speaker setups == FTL People buying speaker setups and then selling their excellent headphones because they prefer speakers == geh?
  6. Damn, that loft is like, model-worthy. (I mean, you should show it as a model, although getting a model to sleep with you because you live there would work, too.)
  7. I misread the title of your thread -- I thought you were putting an interest check on the cats because they were eating your interconnects. Cayenne pepper is a good suggestion -- any hot stuff is good, cats don't like it. Hirsch has some interconnects that look like they are made out of braided chain mail. You should get those (they also happen to be some kickass interconnects).

Jesus, you sold your L3000? Mistake. I mean, the K1000 is like no other headphone, but...the L3000, well, it is like every other normal headphone...except better...
  9. What's the store's return policy? If it's good, go buy 'em, try 'em, and decide for yourself. And then, if you don't like them, do return them. I would go with the 880's, myself, I think it's an excellent headphone. The preference is almost universally for the newer versions.
  10. I don't think you should be wearing electrostatics while dipping your feet in the pool, no. SR-001 Mk II
  11. Deadwood: Al Swearengen: Would you close your flap, that I don't forego my boiled eggs. (Johnny Burns is walking around in his long johns with his butt hanging out, which actually do resemble boiled eggs.)
  12. No, we like people who have their own opinions. Even when we disagree.

    Melikey the purple as well.
  14. Well, considering what he wants to do with it, I think that's completely realistic. I think just about any current laptop should be able to handle Office at its most taxing. Even things like the entry level Asus Aspire models (which is probably what I'm getting my sister). The start at US$300-400 (I haven't been able to find the $300 one, even though I saw it listed in an article, and no, the Aspire is not the same as the Eee -- it actually has the full MS OS).
  15. Started third season of Deadwood. Al just got his hand smashed or whatever else it is that happened to him.
  16. Yeah, Timberland has some funky shit (they also made those other ones that y'all thought were fugly/Matrix-y/Borg-y). Melikey.
  17. I'll see you, and raise you: No, I didn't buy these...yet...

Yeah, it's at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., but you have to know the secret handshake, so before you go, try to get in tight with one of the guys in the suits and the sunglasses.
  19. Pfff. (cues "balloon squeak" sound effect)
  20. I cited that source because I thought they were correct and that they explained it well, not because I thought anyone here would take anyone as an expert in the area (except maybe KG -- feel free to ask him to step in and correct me, I'm not going to bother him). No, push/pull is something else entirely. Push/pull is this -- it's when you amplify the positive side of the swings separately from the negative side of the swings. Balanced amplification is when you amplify the positive to ground signal separately from the negative to ground signal -- which you can also use push/pull to do. That's why it takes twice as much amplification, and why a balanced Beta-22 has twice as many circuit boards as a single-ended one. Your image of balanced transmission also applies to balanced amplification. EDIT: Struck phrase, distracting.

I bet guys who hit on girls at the shooting range are real careful they're not married first.
  23. Yup, pretty much -- I have a A950Ltd, and will be getting an A900Ti in the near future. I thought pretty highly of the A950Ltd -- I like 'em better than the W5000, except the W5000 case is a lot nicer -- sorry to see you're selling yours. Yeah, sorry, I just thought since you were posting in this thread, you'd seen that that's what's going on.
  24. You know, if he put that foot up your ass, it'd hurt really bad.
