Anyone heard both the AV123 Strata Mini and Horn Shoppe Horn?
An "integrated" is basically a power amp + preamp. A preamp is basically a source-selection device that has volume control. If you connect your source to a power amp to speakers without any way of controlling your volume, it will always play at maximum volume. The benefits of an integrated is (a) one less pair of interconnects, ( one less place to plug in power, and in some cases, © size. The benefits of "separates" is (a) modularization, and ( advanced ability to fine-tune your system by mixing and matching components. I've heard neither speaker, but've heard good things about the AV123 one.

How much was it going for? I presume more than the $99 blowout price that I saw at CostCo...but how much more? EDIT: Never mind, just looked it up, seems to be $500 is the price to beat. I was at CostCo just a week ago, and they had an entire Philips surround microsystem (less the tubes), including two floorstander fronts (the ones in the back were standmount 2-ways) and a sub...for $500. I'm not sure which I want more. I think I'll stick with looking at the microsystem for now, since it's pretty close to the one I heard before. Oh, and it was already pretty killer -- I don't know about giant-killer, but it was easily the best US$100 system I'd ever heard. You go to the $500 mark, I'm not so sure.

Thanks. Makes me glad I never got around to getting that other micro system they had.

At least it's not this guy (self-proclaimedly "gay for radiohead").

Post the last thing you bought!
That's beautiful. I'd want to buy it just to have it decorate my liquor cabinet...if I had a real one.

Would I like DT770/DT 880/DT 990?
I have two pairs of DT770's, but neither are 80 ohms. I love them, they are rather durable, and they play rock and electronica well. Others have complained about them being overly sibilant, but nothing that 10,000 khrs. of burn-in won't cure. I don't tend to be sensitive to sibilance, but neither will I argue with those with more sensitive ears than mine.

The Headcase Stax thread
Fixed that for you. If you don't want to concern yourself with biasing, get a solid state, either the 717 (used) or 727A (current TOTL solid-state model). Or a KGSS.

Why is the world so cruel!
Moshing is not the same as fighting, although one often leads to the other. I did read what else you said, but it pretty much sounds like whining to me. Please feel free to explain how it's not. (makes a mental note to check out "X Japan" -- sounds like I might like them) And before you get defensive -- I've been known to whine, too. At least I'm honest about it, when I whine, I know I'm whining. Others have been known call me out on it. One of the reasons you're attracting irritation is that any time someone criticizes you, you either get defensive or go into denial or something. You know, just once, try saying, "yeah, you're right, that was pretty whiney, I'll shut up now". You'd get a lot of points for that. There's nothing wrong with admitting you have faults -- we all have them. (wanders off to look up "Zeitgeist")

Anyone else annoyed by Valentine's day?
- New Emoticon? Go Tyll!!! :D
Well, considering Tyll only got <10% negative reaction in this thread alone, I think he's doing alright.- New Emoticon? Go Tyll!!! :D
Well played, sir.- Anyone else annoyed by Valentine's day?
I used to know a couple -- they avoided most holidays, including Valentine's Day. They said, one shouldn't need to prove one's affection on any one particular dictated day, that they should do it as often as they felt like it -- and they kind of did. They really did up date night about once a month.- Kellogg's Corn Flakes
Yeah, I like Chex, too.- Conversations with the God-robot Alice
What do you mean, "then" it got stupid -- it looked like it was already pretty stupid -- you soundly toyed with your god in your conversation. We enjoy the stupid parts (I do, anyway).- Kellogg's Corn Flakes
Yeah, Corn Flakes hits when nothing else does. Pretty much. There's also some organic varieties that don't have any extra sweetening which are pretty good too. I mean, they use corn syrup as a sweetener for a reason.- Apogee Duet Kicks Ass
I was just being silly (as you were with the core audio comment).- Post the last thing you bought!
Geh? Don't really know, but not much of a DIYer, so...and I presume you're talking bass, neh? - New Emoticon? Go Tyll!!! :D
