I doubt it's that black and white -- I will fully allow that I may be wrong on details or word usage here and there, but I'm pretty sure of myself on the overall concept ("common mode rejection", to be explicit [and to give you something to google, in case KG does not answer your query]). I already said that I wouldn't -- you're welcome to ask him.

Yeah, but this is David Lee Roth, he of the vocal acrobatics. It's actually interesting to hear without the bed of guitars &c. by Eddie & co. underneath. Not to say that I wouldn't mind hearing more of this stuff that circulates amongst the engineers.

I thought I mentioned this one, but it appears I haven't. Best crowd: Urge Overkill/Breeders in Hawaii. I think I was the only one that wasn't partaking of "maui-maui" that night. I was actually in Hawaii on work, and I think I had already been there for 4 weeks at that point, and was getting a little punchy, so I looked around to see if there were any shows that I was interested, found this one, and went. Crowd was absolutely apeshit -- partying, dancing, moshing, crowd-surfing, singing along. High as kites, the lot of them. Line was really slow to get in, so Urge Overkill had already started by the time I got in. They finished, but...it's like the crowd didn't notice. They kept partying, dancing, singing, moshing (not violent like, more like a bunch of individuals doing the pogo in proximity to each other, rather than into each other), and crowdsurfing. "Rhinestone Cowboy" came on. I swear, the entire crowd sang along, moshing, dancing, partying, and crowd-surfing just like it was the headlining band. The Breeders came on at some point, and I think they commented, and they were of course, great. They used two microphones for that one song, "Cannonball", for the first encore, and if at all possible, the crowd went apeshitter...erm...more apeshit.

Help purchasing headphones for my mother (closed, K1000?)
Dusty Chalk replied to Dusty Chalk's topic in Headphones
Alright, update time: my mom jokingly came to the same conclusion that my sisters and I did, that I get the K1000's when she dies. Well, I made the usual joke that "I'm not waiting that long", and apparently it bothered her. I guess that's my problem -- I'm a little too honest. So she's giving them back to me. Yay, I guess. I mean, I was going to offer her a trade for them, as I gave them to her as a gift, a sincere gift -- it was the only things she's been able to hear music on, and I'd like to stand by it. But I wasn't going to offer her just any old compromise -- it had to be something that was pretty close. And I still will. And since she's giving these back to me now, I'd like to get around to it sooner than later. So I brought a couple things (a pair of Shure e2c's, a generously lent pair of W5000's) and we compared the three of them. So, here's the problem: the headphone jack on her mini-system sucks. And I mean sucks big time. It's worse than an afterthought -- it distorts so incredibly bad compared to the speaker jacks that it's not even funny. And it had a pair of RCA jacks, but I think they're aux ins, not source outs. Which rules out an external headphone amp unless I get her a source as well. So choices are: new source, Behringer EQ, external headphone amp and headphones Grado speaker adapter thingy and headphones (as it has built-in EQ) ASL speaker adapter thingy and headphones (I actually have this...somewhere...) DIY speaker adapter thingy -- I presume designs for these exist? Besides the obvious Grado one -- I was thinking the reverse of the AudioValve one -- a transformer based one -- buh? Any other choices I'm missing? Any recommendations, one way or another? I know, the first thing you're going to ask is budget, but here's the thing -- for comparison's sake, just assume that whatever budget I come up with, it's going to be the same. I'm thinking anywhere between US$400 (what they went for then) and US$1K (less than what they go for now, but a little more than I can afford in the immediate future) is reasonable. And of course it doesn't make sense to spend money on a new source at the US$400 end of the spectrum, whereas it will make more sense at the US$1K of the spectrum, but I'm not sure she can hear that much of a difference. I'm beginning to think that the reason she liked the K1000's so much better is because the speaker outs on her little rig is that much better than the headphone jack was. She's basically deaf -- wears a hearing aid all the time, and half the time still needs people to repeat themselves. So instead of the old criteria -- being clean sounding, having little bass, I'm thinking the new criteria is: can handle being played loud. Because she does, she cranks it 'til everyone in the room can hear them. Long term, not just the occasional transient. And since it has built-in EQ, it doesn't need to be bass-light. So what's the best loud-handling headphones -- open or closed, but closed would be preferable -- yet moderately comfy (she didn't mind sticking the e2c's in her ears -- she said she's used to that -- but having to hold them in ruined the enjoyment factor for her a little bit), today? I don't play my music loud, so I don't really have a handle on this -- anyone know what measurement I should look for? I'm thinking Senns (HD600?) since they're open -- the voice coil is a little more exposed, hence cooling, hence better loud-handling capability (guessing). Although we're still thinking that closed might be better, since outside noise can be distracting. Here's anothing thing -- if the headphones are big and comfy enough, she can handle using her hearing aid -- she did with the W5000's. At which point you'd think that almost anything would work, but I would still prefer something that she can just crank, that way she doesn't need to leave the hearing aid in. So anyway -- when I get the A900Ti, I was thinking about getting the entry level closed A500, and giving her a shot on those. Since I'm always recommending the Koss Pro 4AAAAA, I'm thinking maybe I should get around to getting those and giving her a shot on them. I believe there are three of them: Pro 4AA, Pro 4AAT, and the Pro 4AAAT, which, although looking open, is closed according to Koss. -

Because your criteria for balanced is only half the story. Yes, tying the negative signal to the other terminal is part of it, but they must both be relative to ground, and since most dynamic driver speakers and headphones don't have a ground, it can't be done. Only electrostatics can be truly balanced. Remember, it's just a potential difference, if you float the ground, then you've lost the stable reference for the common noise on the line. I'm not saying it's bad -- faux-balanced is still an improvement over completely single-ended, but to call it balanced is not entirely correct. I realize I'm being pedantic, but that's not the same as being wrong.

Too many to list: The entire cookie speech; the "Dawn's in trouble; must be Tuesday" line; this exchange: Buffy: Okay. Um ... how about the expression, 'Vampire slayer'? Vamp: What the hell you talkin' about? Buffy: Wow. Never heard that one. Okay. How about, 'Oh god, my leg, my leg'? The Vampire growls and lunges at her. She ducks his grab, punches him in the face and kicks his leg. His knee buckles and he falls to the ground. Vamp: Oh god! My leg! Uhh... Just for starters.

Need inexpensive and reliable DVD player
Dusty Chalk replied to guzziguy's topic in Home Source Components
My Pioneer automatically stops spinning the disk after some ridiculous amount of time (10 minutes, I think). When it's in resume mode, you hit play, and it picks up right where you left off. You definitely need something like that. It'll continue playing a movie if you are playing a movie, but I don't know what'll happen if you put it in infinite repeat mode, I've never done that. I don't know if that's an issue with you or not. I don't think it's spinning the disk if it's just the menu loaded. You should listen to it with a stethoscope. -
Geh. People buying speaker setups == FTW People selling their excellent headphones to fund their speaker setups == FTL People buying speaker setups and then selling their excellent headphones because they prefer speakers == geh?

Damn, that loft is like, model-worthy. (I mean, you should show it as a model, although getting a model to sleep with you because you live there would work, too.)

I misread the title of your thread -- I thought you were putting an interest check on the cats because they were eating your interconnects. Cayenne pepper is a good suggestion -- any hot stuff is good, cats don't like it. Hirsch has some interconnects that look like they are made out of braided chain mail. You should get those (they also happen to be some kickass interconnects).

Jesus, you sold your L3000? Mistake. I mean, the K1000 is like no other headphone, but...the L3000, well, it is like every other normal headphone...except better...

What's the store's return policy? If it's good, go buy 'em, try 'em, and decide for yourself. And then, if you don't like them, do return them. I would go with the 880's, myself, I think it's an excellent headphone. The preference is almost universally for the newer versions.

New Laptop Purchasing Help
Dusty Chalk replied to Chekhonte's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
Well, considering what he wants to do with it, I think that's completely realistic. I think just about any current laptop should be able to handle Office at its most taxing. Even things like the entry level Asus Aspire models (which is probably what I'm getting my sister). The start at US$300-400 (I haven't been able to find the $300 one, even though I saw it listed in an article, and no, the Aspire is not the same as the Eee -- it actually has the full MS OS).
