Yeah it was Todd the Vinyl Junkie that had the K1000 on sale for like $375-$399. Something ridiculous like that.....Oh if I only knew. I would've bought 5 and sold 3.

The NOS Stax SR-Λ Pro I just bought from Headphile has to be the best purchase I've made to date.

Wow, they are nice, but yikes! A wee bit pricey.

huh, we;; whadda ya know. I guess some companies are really into integrating all aspects of your life into an iPod. If they made a portable razer attachment, I'd be happy.

If you go the tube amp route, you could also talk to Mikhail from Singlepower about a PPX (or look for one in the FS threads her or at Head-Fi). I haven't heard the EAR amp, but a number of people have good things to say about it. The PPX is more expensive, but you get your money's worth for sure.

It's got a "clever knob" I'm sold.

Wow...and only after what, 6 years of iPod sales. They jumped on that one man.

Are new headphones getting better, and if so, how much?
thrice replied to aerius's topic in Headphones
I thought the newer 880 had good impact and the bass was fine. Perhaps not the deepest bass out there, but it's no slouch. Overall I felt the tonal balance was good. I've tended to feel that the K701 is just a bit too bass heavy. The DT880 seemed more natural. -

Unfortunately I have no experience with the old DT880. I did hear it once a few month ago for about 1 min. Not enough time to really gather any impressions. -

Well, I had the opportunity to hear the 2006 DT 880 this weekend, hooked up to a Balanced Max and then hooked up to a maxxed out PIMETA I've made for myself. Gotta say that I was impressed. I would go so far as to say I liked them more than the K701. The K701 is a great all-around headphone that can handle various styles of music, but I always feel disengaged from it whenever I've heard it. I can hear that it's a "good" headphone, but it's not really something I want to own. The DT880 grabbed my attention right away...it was well-balanced, good detail and overall a fun headphone to listen to. I really would like to spend more time with it. It was a DT880 2006 model with balanced cardas recable (the kind headroom does). -
It ought to say right near the DC jack...should be some sort of visual indicating which part of the plug is plus and minus. If not then check the wall-wart that comes with it....oh wait, you don't have the original wall-wart do you, that's why you're asking huh?

Well at least they still look like cheap plastic headphones....all is still right with the world in that respect. Still SR-60 drivers for only $49...not bad. Maybe they'll be the gateway drug for the masses of iPod totin' hipsters. -

Not only that, but it seems like music and the industry that surrounds it is being driven not by quality, but by convenience. Music downloads, cell phones that play music...etc. I'm sure people have been crying about the death of high-end audio for years and I'm sure we will for years to come.... So stockpile those R10s, K1000s, PS-1s, HE90s...etc. Because the storms a'comin' (god i love that smiley) I'd think the growth of the hobby will eventually lead to better headphones over time though....perhaps better headphones at a better price. -
maybe it's just me then...oh well.

I wish I had spent a little time with this at the National meet, I'm intriqued by the various wireless digital boxes on the market, but I wonder about SQ and of course compatibility with iTunes Music Store tracks (which none of them have). But you can always burn and rerip to overide the DRM. The gadget geek in me really wants a source like this, especially since you can do wireless streaming and hook an external DAC to the thing as well.

Audio Technica headphone question -- closest to leatherhead?
thrice replied to Dusty Chalk's topic in Headphones
The L3000 driver are 53mm in diameter. The thickness is different though. They are tin around the edges and have a thicker middle where the solder pads are. -
When I heard it at the National meet, I wasn't upset with the sound as much as the fit. It seems like AT is going with longer headband pieces. The problem I noticed was that the metal headbands are too long and that caused the top of the pad to not sit against my head...there was a gap...music leaked out, sound leaked in. When I pressed on the top of each can then i got a goo seat and that made all the difference. I noticed this with the ATH-AD500 I tried a year ago as well. Overall I was dissappointed because I think they would be better cans if they just fit better. I don't know, do W5000 owners notice this as well, or do I have a tiny head (sigh, go ahead with the penis jokes...)

They are out of production. There were a few used a few months back, they come and go (kinda like Karma Chameleons). You can probably get a pair for ~$300 used, but I guess it will also depend on demand as well. Thank god it's not an HF-1, otherwise you'd pay mucho mucho! -

They are indeed. Burning-in nicely. The highs aren't quite there, but I've heard they need some time. Each day they get a little better so I'm hopeful. I don't think they will get 100% there, but we'll see. One way or another, it was a very inexpensive way to get that L3000 sound. -

Perhaps you can find someone with a pair of W100 that have L3000 drivers in them...I hear that's a pretty good combo -
No, just the drivers.....the grills, the metal band that holds the grill on, the bottom plastic piece where the cables enter and even the circuit board are not included with a new pair of drivers....The rest I can unserstand, but the circuit board was a bit of a surprise.

no you can send non-warranty items to them regardless....they're just goning to charge you....I had to pay a bench fee and shipping (small amount, less than $30) so it was worth it.
