  1. I went to see Paul Galbraith last night at NVCC. He played a Bach Cello Suite transcribed for 8-string guitar, a Mozart Piano Sonata and some other piano and folks songs via prominent composers. His encore was a Bach hymn. Galbraith is one of the most amazing classical musicians I've had the priveledge to see live. it was a small room, no more than 150 people. I sat in the second row and the whole experience was spellbinding. He makes the guitar sound like a piano at times. If he wasn't right in front of me at times I would swear there was more than one person playing. His technique was brilliant, his musicality inspiring. He's coming to a larger venue called WolfTrap in VA soon, I am definitely going to attend that if I can. He has a few recording out: Bach Sonatas and Partitats, Bach Lute Suites, Haydn Piano Sonatas and a disc of impressionist music (Debussy, Ravel...etc.). If you love classical guitar and you have not heard Paul Galbraith....you do no know what you are missing.
  2. I may have a Canare sitting around somewhere as well..... those are the ones I've used in the past. I think the Cardas plug is slightly smaller and does sometimes have trouble making contact in looser 1/4 jacks. I seem to recall reading that somewhere.
  3. It was a good movie. Not the best of the year for me, but this years was a bit less spectacular than others. I do think that Pan's Labyrinth was pretty damn good though. I will also agree with postjack regarding Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He is quite good and Owning Mahoney is probably my favorite movie from him. Right now we're waiting to see The Last King of Scotland....need to be in a certain mood for that...kinda like Hotel Rwanda. You don't just sit down and watch it, you need to prepare.
  4. I would agree...you need to find the entire vinyl experience enjoyable for it to be worth it. On another note, I'll post pics of the Bottlehead soon. There are some pics of it in the NY meet impressions thread. I haven't stained it yet so I'll take care of that first then post pics.
  5. LOL
  6. Oh, but Xena is cool right.....of course I love Xena too so...nevermind
  7. Oh hell yeah man DS9 represent! (OK, I'm official a major NERD now) I've been watching the star trek series in order...Next gen, DS9, Voyager is coming up next and then on to Enterprise. DS9 is really getting good now too (season 4-5). I've been toying with checking out Battlestar Galactica...this thread has strengthend my resolve. On another note, I'm just about ready to give up on LOST too. Seasons 1 and 2 kept me going, but three is just messing with us. I kinda get the feeling that the writers have no clue where they're going and the payoff is going to be a major letdown. I hope I'm wrong, but I might wait for the series to play itself out before spending anymore time watching it.
  8. Another vote for the Hakko. I love that iron, so easy to use and I also think it feels better in my hand than the Weller.
  9. Some fuses are ceramic, but in this case I don't think a ceramic fuse would be used. Didn't some other folks have trouble with the power switches on the older toaster MPX amps?
  10. I haven't spent a lot of time listening to really high end vinyl rigs, but I've been really satisfied with the P1 so far. I'm running it off the phono stage in my denon receiver right now, but when the Bottlehead Seduction preamp arrives, I'll use that ($274 for the kit, you build it yourself). The big thing seems to be cleaning the records. Once they're clean I find they sound really quite good. I haven't done a direct comparison to my Wadia CD player though. I had a bunch of vinyl though, so it's nice to have a modest rig to play it on. I do buy some jazz on vinyl (mostly for the romantic quality of it all) but most new music I purchase on CD. I've heard the P1 obviously and the MMF 5 and both sound good. I'm sure a higher end turntable will trounce them, but IMHO for the money they were worthwhile investments. The P1 especially, at $350 it's a steal. the ortofon cartridge, while not the best thing on earth, is good and there's a nice tidy upgrade path up the Ortofon lineup. Hope that helps.

  12. It is, I've been enjoying mine quite a bit. I'm waiting on a Bottlehead Seduction phono preamp kit to arrive to round out the vinyl setup. Overall the P1 is a great little TT for $350. I'm quite happy with it.
  13. So I've spent more time with the SRM-T1/ED-1 combo lately. I must say that I'm a bit at a loss to really make a decision. On the one hand, the ED-1 processes information out, so you miss micro-detail and lose some dynamic "umph". But on the other hand it does snap things into focus. It's like there's a slight haze on the sound without it, and then you turn it on and BAM, clarity. Overall i'm not sure if it's something I want to keep and use long term. I like the depth it adds to the headstage and image, but at times it can sound a bit thin and anemic. It's certainly an interesting device. It works best with the Lambda Pro (since it was designed for that headphone) and not very well with the Sigma Pro...not at all. It's good with the Lambda Signature too although less so, but not by much. I also got a pair of SR-X/MKIII headphones and these are little firecrackers! Clear and snappy. It's amazing how good these things sound....lots of fun with electronica and pop/rock.
  14. Sigh.......that's what she said
  15. That looks gorgeous man....absolutely stunning!

    Music Video

Don't forget the answer to that video:
  17. Congrats on the new source. I've heard stevieo's and I've always liked it.
  18. Well, I've been living with an SRM-T1 amp and the ED-1 equalizer for the Lambda Pros recently and it's an interesting experience. We had a little electrostatic get-together here in MD last weekend at Hirsch's and the general consensus was that the ED-1 causes a loss of detail. While it didn't scale well with the Sigma Pros or even the Lambda Signatures I do think it does better with the Lambda Pros. There are some trade-offs when using it. I'll write up more after I've had a little more time with it.
  19. Thanks dudes!
  20. Congrats Alex! How much is the SR-001 to 5-pin stax converter? i'm interested in that for sure. Thanks, thrice
  21. Interesting..."Their ability to time align the music's transient events (eliminate time smearing) makes them more transparent, dynamic and "life like" than any other cable I have ever heard." That bit of marketing copy is worth $100 cables for sure....

    AKG K271S

the k271 was my first "big-boy" headphone. I still miss them. They're pretty good for a $150 headphone.
  23. I know...in his post he mentioned both the mini cubed and the M3...I commented on both of them.
  24. The mini cubed isn't in production right now since the boards are not available. The M3 is not a portable amp by any means. It needs a much beefier power supply than any portable would need. MisterX and SFT seem to be the only guys making the M3 right now. Check here, scroll to the bottom: http://www.amb.org/audio/mmm/
  25. Well, I gotta say that the Headroom Micro amp with desktop modules is a pretty damn good portable...the downsides are low battery life and size, but if you're looking for a transportable amp then a power supply might do the trick. but yeah the portable amp market is a bit silly at times.
