I've been slowly trying to learn how to program for the iPhone... I'm going to step up my efforts now, since I can think of a ton of cool stuff that's now possible with a larger screen.

Oh no, I didn't mean straight ports... but a developer could leave their first app as is and develop a V.2 app with added functionality... much like Tweetie did. Personally, I think that's fine. The furvor over developers wanting to get paid for a separate V.2 app that adds functionality is idiotic... these things don't just make themselves. It seemed awkward that Apple forced developers to provide free updates for the life of the app... at least initially. That can be overcome with in-app purchasing I suppose now or a new V.x app.

They mentioned that nearly all of the current iPhone/iPod Touch apps will run on the iPad right now, as is. I can't imagine that you will have to repurchase an current app to get that particular app to run on the iPad. Of course developers can go either way. Either update an existing app to work on all devices or introduce a new iPad capable version of their app. I imagine we will see both and people will be upset either way.

I wouldn't be surprised to see free battery replacements with the Applecare warranty. Probably standard warranty covers it for a year. The iPhone and iPod Touch backup automatically to your computer when they sync with iTunes. I'd bet this does the same thing. The effect of this is that you can backup the device and if it's lost, stolen or damaged, you just sync a new device and restore from the latest backup. It works fairly well. When we sold out iPod Touches and got iPhones this summer, I was able to backup both our iPod Touches and then "restore" those apps/settings..etc. to the new iPhones. I think it will depend on where you are and how much repair is needed. Certainly the Genius Bar at an Apple store can probably handle some repairs on site. The last time I went to a Genius Bar (few months ago), they seem to be working on a quick 15 minute appointment model where the employee assesses the situation and then either solves the issue or checks the item in for repair. Of course, they don't keep that 15 minute slot all the time... some issues take longer, but that seems to be the current working model for Genius Bar appointments. If the device needs to be replaced outright, then you probably get that on site and then go home and restore from the backup onto the new device.

Oh man... just got some time to check this thing out. Stupid meetings. Well, I can say that I'm getting one.... either 32 or 64GB WiFi. Don't really need the 3G or the accompanying bill. I'm hoping that the app environment for this will e what really sets it apart. Now that you have a tablet like device that has keyboard entry capabilities we will start to see some more robust productivity apps (not that the ones on the iPhone are any slouch). Like I said earlier... I don't need a laptop, but an electronic device that can accompany me around to meetings and act as an extension of the desktop would be killer. This looks like it could make that leap... but it needs the apps. I'm sure Omnifocus will put something cool out for this and there are apps for creating and editing Office docs as well. Now, if I could use this to get into our sharepoint site and edit the docs we have there... that would really make it killer. It would be awesome if Microsoft made an Office suite for this. We're starting t use Infopath and Sharepoint a lot at work and this type of device could be a perfect extension of some of those applications. Oh, and the calendar app looks fucking insane! I also agree that time in hand will bear out the significance of this device. Over the next 60 days people will either love or hate it (there's probably a lot of hate, just due to the fever pitch the rumors created). But once it gets out there... man, the possibilities will seem endless. I like this pre-announcement post: 20 Things Already Known About the Apple Tablet - Doghouse diaries - Gizmodo #14 and 19 are particularly true.

I don't know if this was a previous feature, but there is now an option to "Download This Thread" under the Thread options menu... it downloads a text file of the complete thread... pretty useful.

I heard it's ten feet tall and shoots thunderbolts from it's arse... much like William Wallace: On a side note... I'm pissed that I have a boring status meeting today from 2-4.... right when it's gonna get good or the Apple Store opens up online and full specs and details are available.

I'm gonna go ahead and post my prediction just in case, on the very unlikely possibility of me being right. While I think they are going to introduce some sort of flat tablety device, I don't think it will be called the iSlate or the iTablet. I think this is going to be the new Macbook. I know, I know, but hear me out. Right now Apple has a strong laptop line with the MacBook Pro. 13, 15 and 17 inch models. The MacBook line was gutted during the last update. While the current MacBook sits just below the $1000 mark, the low end 13" MacBook Pro isn't far off at $1199. It could easily go to $1099 with $999 education pricing. The MacBook is one of their best brands and yet, they only have one model that's pretty close to the 13 MacBook Pro spec-wise and they eliminated the black option. That looks like they are clearing out that channel. So the new device is actually a MacBook and the iSlate or iTablet thing people are hearing about is really software run on said MacBook for handwriting recognition or touch interface interpretation. Either that or they drop the MacBook entirely and replace it with this new thing. But their product lines don't seem to need another "thing." The iPod/iPhone line is full with options. Their computer line is full too. Tech folks have been saying it's got to be either a laptop/netbook replacement or a new category of product... I think it might be both. Anyway... at least that's what I want. It's fun to pretend.

Oh man, that would be awesome. I'm hoping it can act as an extension from a desktop. I don't really need a laptop around work... but the iPhone is a poor substitute for getting more complex tasks done. A tablet that can sync back to a Mac or a PC, would be great. I can't tell you how many meetings I go to and wish I had something smaller than a laptop to use for light note taking, PDF/document viewing/project management stuff.

It’s the first hands-on review of the Apple Tablet! Walt Mosspuppet: Tech News and Opinion Walt Mosspuppet already has the iSlate... apparently, there's a feature that triggers a unicorn to deliver your favorite pizza.... Damn.

I wouldn't hold your breath for a physical keyboard on the device itself. I do hope that you will be able to use a physical keyboard either wirelessly via Bluetooth or wired via a dock of some kind. But it wouldn't surprise me if even that wasn't an option.
