  1. From your description your K340 is probably the same version that phi...err..Jay has, which sounds rather different from mine so the results I had with mods may be a bit different. With that said I'll cover the mods one by one in the order that I did them on my K340. 1) New cables. Opened up the sound and gave it a bit more highs, quite welcome since mine were lacking in highs. 2) Closing up the housing. Mine had gobs of loose bass when it was stock, think PS-1 quantities but loose, slow & flabby like the K240S. Closing up the back tightened up the bass a lot as well as reducing the bass volume a bit. Adds a lot of speed & detail to the low end and makes the imaging a lot more precise. Another welcome change. 3) PCB bypass. I had a nasty midrange colouration, sounded like a big spike & dip right beside each other combined with an echoey sound, it wasn't pretty. The bypass greatly reduces this problem as well as giving more speed & detail to the midrange. Also opened up the treble a bit more and gave more extension up there as well as improving the soundstage & imaging some more. 4) Blue-tack & cotton. Removed most of the cotton stuffing and added Blu-tack to various places on the housing & other internal parts. The amount of cotton stuffing changes the balance between bass & treble, more cotton tilts it towards the bass while less gives more treble. Blu-tack is for killing the last bit of that pesky midrange colouration on my pair. 5) Screen mod. I made a fabric screen out of some super thin fabric I found, and made a frame for it with cardboard & sheetmetal. I didn't really like it. A bit more extension up top, but the details sounded washed out, like they were playing on a grey or lighter coloured background. Plus it carries the risk of giving you a nice shock to the ears. Given that you're quite happy with how your pair currently sounds, I'd say get everything done except the rescreening. Ask Larry to voice them such that the frequency balance stays pretty much the same as it is, but with more detail, speed, and all that other good stuff.
  2. They come broken in too since I had a buddy at Postal pull them off the line so I could test them out at home.
  3. Take one for the team! According to the this brief intro/impressions, it's better than a Wadia...grain of salt as always, but seems promising. Oh yeah, and it costs $10k.
  4. Back when I worked in a bike shop, a co-worker did the hip thrusting motions to indicate that he'd gotten laid good the night before. Unfortunately he forgot he was free-balling and ended up bouncing his nuts off his taint, after which he doubled over in pain. One of the funniest things I've ever seen.
  5. Step 1: Find an attractive female with a ponytail Step 2: Ask if you can have her hair elastic Step 3: Repeat steps 1 & 2 until you have a nice collection of hair elastics Step 4: Remove the screw in the headband and open it up. Step 5: Replace worn elastic with one of the hair elastics you got
  6. I haven't heard the tube yet, but various sources say it's similar to the 5687 but with lower distortion. However some have complained that it can be a bit lean and too solidstate-like. That's more or less the general consensus I get from diyaudio.com and audioasylum. I was going to grab some for my current amp project but ended up using 6BL7's instead since the local surplus store has a nice stash of them. In theory it should be a nice tube, and at $12 a pop or so the last time I checked it's still pretty affordable.
  7. The sad part is that you're absolutely right. Check this out. http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=182171 "Waaaahhh!!! You're not allowed to own 4 K340's!!"
  8. Because it's fun. Plus I have a secret hope that one of my put-downs will result in the suicide of a whiner.
  9. Nah nah nah nah! Nah nah nah nah! Hey hey hey, goodbye! Feel free to jump off that highway overpass!
  10. Hard to say, but in general I think they do. I've only heard a couple types of 6BL7's and I haven't heard the super-duper 6SN7's (eg. TS roundplate, '52 Sylvania) yet so I can't make a definitive statement. If run at lower power levels, they don't really open up and end up sounding more like a GE 6SN7GTA than anything else. Not bad, but not great.
  11. Because if no one is making a profit off HF-1's on Head-fi, then we can pretend everything is kosher and dance in the flowery fields with pink unicorns, or something like that. Nevermind that the HF-1's will still be sold on ebay, audiogon, and everywhere else for $400 or whatever the market will support, but hey, if it's not happening on Head-fi then the delusional whiny fucknuts can claim some kind of "moral victory" for the good of the headphone community or something like that. Which is to say it's a load of crock. Tell you what, if you don't like the fact that people are making profits off HF-1 sales, you can always close your eyes, plug your ears, and scream "la-la-la-la-la-la-la I can't hear you it's not happening!", and don't forget to tighten the foil hat around your skull. And if that doesn't work you can always dive headfirst off a highway overpass, you'll never have to worry about HF-1 profiteering again, and we won't have to put up with your endless whining and crying.
  12. Personally I'm waiting for a "Running Man" reality show or a "Thunderdome" show. Two men enter! One man leaves! Also has the bonus of helping to solve the prison overcrowding problem.

    They're here

Ask Rhydon about that one, comes with some interesting motions, after which you'll get uneasy feelings about wearing them.
  14. BTW, Baby Jesus Butt Plug. Don't ask me how I know of it...
  15. One of them is a variable speed vibrator so that one at least isn't one-note bass, in theory...
  16. My GF has some vibrators but as far as I know she doesn't put them up her butt.
  17. It needs bigger tubes. Get something like a 6AS7 or 5X4 and wire it up so the filaments glow nicely. People will ooooohhh and aaahhh and be tricked into thinking it's some super amp when it's just a Millett.
  18. It's because you touch yourself at night.
  19. I think she's cute. Too bad she's married, and not to me.
  20. Apathy is probably the most common thing in the universe after stupidity.
  21. Neither. I suggest a platinum-iridium alloy for all your wiring needs. It's ludicrously expensive so it must be good, plus I don't think anyone uses it for audio cables yet.
  22. I think I've figured out how your system works: Every time you get a lifetime supply of 6SN7's, you get another amp that uses 6SN7's, which means a few hundred more tubes need to be added to the stockpile.
  23. If I didn't already have a mid-range Grado I would've bought the HF-1 when it first came out, but I do which makes buying one redundant, so I didn't. As for the whiners on Head-fi, my ignore list over there, better known as "the shitlist", has been growing at a pretty good clip lately. The whining & crying is fucking headache inducing, it's almost as bad as dealing with a woman with PMS. "Waaahhh! I want an HF-1 but why does it cost so much?" "Waaahhhh!!! You shouldn't be allowed to profit on an HF-1 sale!" "Waaaahhhh!!!!" Just fucking shut up already.

  25. Holy crap, how'd he surpass me in total posts this fast?
