HELL HATH FROZEN OVER! [and a tube question for Earl]
aerius replied to philodox's topic in Headphone Amplification
I think jpak's being sarcastic, the K340's are a pain in the ass to drive, in an OTL amp I personally wouldn't use anything less than a 6BL7 and with transformer output a 6SN7 is about as low as I'd want to go. A 6BZ7 just doesn't make sense to me. -
Biggie has a well known love for Sony and Audio Technica headphones.

Don't forget the gratuitous Boomer nudie scene, and the one with Six's naked butt.

Meh, it's just another one of the countless 6SL7-6SN7-300B amps, nothing special, those things are a dime a dozen. Not bad, but nothing special other than the 2-chassis design. What I'm saying is, go nuts, get really out there on the fringe and build something like The Karna. Push-pull 5687 to 2A3 to 300B, loads more power & control, sounds radically different from the traditional single-ended 300B. The only downside is it's gonna cost a fortune and you need to get someone to custom-build it.

Go totally nuts and get someone to custom build a push-pull 300B tube amp.

So basically my parents' Dual 721 turntable is mine along the classic Shure V15 type III cartridge. I don't even have a proper phonostage so I just plugged it into the phono inputs of my pawn shop special Technics receiver and put my Senn 580 right into its headphone out. It's a ghetto setup if there ever was one. Shockingly, my Senns don't suck anymore, they actually sound pretty good. Yeah there's still a bit of 3-blob effect in the soundstage and the imaging is still fuzzy compared to my K340, but the veil & sulky midrange is pretty much gone. The damn thing can actually do tone and rock out, a Senn with groove, who the fuck would've thought? Playing the live version of "Duke of Earl" by The Nylons is a trip, they groove and they jive, and carry a mean rhythm. So now I actually have a use for my Senns besides listening to MP3's on my computer. Next I plugged my K340's into the system, I got more betterness but there wasn't enough bass. Technics in their wisdom provided a handy knob for cranking up the bass, so I did, and all was good with the world. It turns out my K340 is also a hell of a lot better than I thought it was, I thought the soundstage layering & imaging was good before, now it's more like K1000 soundstage with all the K340 goodness and bass slam. Currently playing "Life's Rich Pageant" by R.E.M. which I've heard on CD countless times, but not like this, the LP squashes the CD like a grape. It's ridiculous, I could buy the setup I'm listening to at the pawn shops for maybe 200-300 bucks and it murders my custom built & modded CDP & tube amp rig. Fuck this shit, I'm not typing anymore, I'm breaking out the rest of my LP's.

Yeah, I'll probably have to start using my GF's shoeboxes soon. That just sounds so wrong in so many ways, but I don't know why. Depends on which grey glass RCA it is. There's a grey glass one where the internals look pretty much the same as the clear glass 6SN7GT, and another earlier (I think) version which has the round micas with the rectangular mica inserts on the top mica. The first one sounds pretty close to the clear glass, the latter has a much richer & fuller tone along with more bass and smoother highs. Then again mine are all the 12SN7 and 1633 versions so I don't know how the 6SN7's are like.

I use a shoebox. Seriously, I do. The tubes are in their original boxes and those boxes go into a shoebox. Then I ran out of space and used the cardboard shipping cartons which the tubes and other electronics gear came in. When I run out of space again I'm not sure what I'll do.

Perhaps a lot of them have never heard half decent bass before, or they're mistaking a mid-bass hump for deep strong bass. Or maybe the reviewer's just a complete tool, like the countless shameless fanboys on Head-fi. It's the shiny bling effect of the techflex cable jackets with silver/gold accents. Any decent recording with a grand piano, especially something like a B

Burn the heathen!! Yeah, I can agree on that. A heretic! Burn him!!

Is Eddie Current coming out something new?
aerius replied to humanflyz's topic in Headphone Amplification
It depends greatly on the enclosure, but chances are you're not going to feel the bass unless you have a fridge-sized speaker cabinet. -

Both, but most people build the enclosures themselves since the drivers' been around for ages and there's a million plans & builder's clubs floating around. But take a listen to them first, they ain't for everyone and some people just don't get them. If you want we can meet up at the store after work or something for a listening session, the owner's a good guy he'll be happy to let us drop in. -

Lowthers man, Lowthers. My Kind of Music has a set of Lowthers driven by tube amps, they're pretty interesting. They're not going to rock out to Led Zeppelin, but for say Tori Amos' "Little Earthquakes" or the earlier Cowboy Junkies albums, they do something really special. -

Here's a report for you. I've heard the Bada PH12 and some of the other shit which Artfuck peddles. Here's a surprise for you. The shit don't sound nearly as good as he claims. "Performs far above their prices"? Bullshit. They're decent to good for what they cost, period, and that's when I roll the good tubes through them. With stock tubes, they're crap. Harsh, grainy, painful crap. Go do a search on Head-fi for my Bada PH-12 thread. I clearly state that the Singlepower is a better amp. Christ 909, do some fucking work before sticking up for this shithead. But that's besides the point. The point is that dretardwells is a dishonest shilling asshole. So he fixed some CD players and got you some good deals, whoop-de-do, that doesn't excuse his other actions and he's still a shit-licking asshole.

I watch it for the women. Mmmmm...Grace Park....

She said it was some senior technician guy in the instrumentation division of the company she used to work for. That's all I know.

The fact of the matter remains that the majority of the shit you recommend, I mean SHILL is sold by Cattylink. You're still a shameless shilling asshole whose opinions are worse than worthless. Not to mention your bullshit "reviews" to pimp Cattylink gear. So Head-fi finally got around to slapping a MoT tag on you so you can't shill anymore, and now you want to come here to shill your shit. Tell me why we shouldn't change your title to "Cattylink Shilling Shithead"?

Apparently it sounds pretty good too, it was featured at a Seattle (I think) meet about 5 or 6 years ago and the impressions were quite favourable. I think Eric343 heard it but I'm not too sure.

Unfortunately my friend's in Alberta doing work for the oil & pipelines industry and I don't know when she'll be back in the Toronto area again, I'm guessing Christmas but who knows, I'll definitely let you know if I hear any news. You'll probably want to hear her CD player too, it's an Audio Aero Capitole. I was like "how the hell do you afford that?", then she told me how much they were paying her and I almost shit myself. Damn Waterloo engineers...

As far as I know, there is no commercially available headphone amp which does so you're probably looking at a custom job. The SinglePower Extreme looks quite promising but I haven't heard one yet so I wouldn't know. Biggie's amp uses push-pull EL34's and a transformer output and a friend of mine has an amp that uses push-pull 2A3's, also transformer output. Those two are the best RS-1 amps I've ever heard, they're a few levels above everything else, with the 2A3 amp having the edge. To me it's good, but not great. Dynamics, weight, and control aren't as good as the amps listed above. Slap an output transformer on it and it gets better, but still not as good as a triode wired 12W6 or EL34, which in turn isn't quite as good as a 2A3.

Espressivo Headphone Amplifier, because someone has to build one...
