  1. It's pretty sad when the pictures from my digital camera and the porn I've downloaded off the 'net have more redundant backups than head-fi does.
  2. Nottingham Dais. See if you can get a listen to one somewhere.
  3. Compared to the "good version", my K340 has the following shortfalls more midrange colouration less treble can't play as loud slightly less speed & resolution In any case, even with a fully "healthy" K340 the points noted in the opening post remain true. The margins won't be as big, but that's about it. Or to put it another way, it would be like comparing an Alessandro MS-1 and a Grado 225 to an RS-1, with my K340 being the MS-1 and a good K340 being the 225. It closes the gap a bit but it ain't gonna turn the tables around.
  4. I'm thinking about it. Sorta. The treble's nicely tamed with the right tubes and doesn't bug me so I'm not in any real hurry to get flats, but it's something I'll likely do eventually. Which translates to "sometime in the next couple years. Maybe". Mine's the one with lots of bass. I've tweaked it a lot to even out the midrange and get more treble so a lot of that extra bass is gone, but it's still more bassy than my Senn 580. I know it's not my amp since my amp will cleanly drive K1000's to deafening volumes, and it has enough power to run speakers. My pair of K340's just doesn't like playing loud for whatever reason.
  5. I'm going slightly mad I'm going slightly mad It finally happened - happened It finally happened - ooh oh It finally happened I'm slightly mad Oh dear
  6. I wouldn't worry until you start having a lengthy conversation with yourself, and begin referring to yourself in the 3rd person...
  7. Define "normally". If by normally you mean one sneeze away from going tits up, they should be able to get that done within a week. If you mean getting it to run right, and doing it properly, the answer is never.
  8. I've had a couple weeks or so to get used to my RS-1, so far I'm really happy with it and it has for the most part replaced my heavily modified K340 as my main headphone. I guess I'll give a summary of the larger differences for now and then go on to cover other things. Headroom: The RS-1 can play a hell of a lot louder without sounding strained. If I push my K340 it'll start sounding a little plasticky and echoey, and if I want to play Slayer at earbleed volumes it goes to crap. The colourations get really bad, the soundstage mushes into a shitty blob, and it sounds very compressed and strained. The RS-1 just keeps getting louder until my ears hurt. The treble gets a bit out of hand and there's a hint of congestion in the midrange, but that's about it. Speed: The RS-1 is faster, no question about it, especially in the bass to lower midrange. I find it especially noticeable with drums, the K340 tends to round them off a bit and blur them together, this is most apparent when playing metal or hard rock. Soundstage: yeah it's smaller, but not by as much as I thought it would be. Going from my K340 to my SR225 is a huge change, it's like big to where the fuck did it go? K340 to RS-1 is more like big to it's not so bad. Imaging is definitely more precise with the RS-1 though, it sounds denser and more real. Tone: both headphones emphasize the midrange and are known for good mids. The RS-1 however, just gets the tone right in a scary good way. All guitars, string instruments, brass, woodwinds, and female vocals are just a big jump up with the RS-1. Male vocals vary a bit, some are a bit better, others are lots better. Treble: My K340 has a weak treble, cymbals are definitely soft, brass doesn't sound quite right, but it doesn't matter too much to me. The RS-1 is a little sharp with 6BL7 tubes in my amp, but everything was fine once I dropped the grey glass RCA's in there. No contest, RS-1 takes it. Resolution: RS-1's better, no question. On "Cynthia" by Blue Rodeo, the background vocal sounds enough like Sarah McLachlan that I can't be sure if it is her with the K340. With the RS-1, I can tell that it clearly ain't Sarah. Looks: Chicks dig the RS-1 for some reason. I've had several women tell me that it looks sweet. For reference, I'm using squished down bowl pads, and the same amps, cables, and CD player.
  9. When I had a K701 on extended loan a while back I thought about pulling the foam, but then I recalled what happened when I did the same thing to my Senn 580. To me at least, the treble on the K701 was bright enough as it is and I knew from the 580 that foam removal would make it even brighter. So I didn't bother, besides, they weren't mine.
  10. Learn something new every day, I had no idea Modwright made linestages, I've always thought they just did CD player mods. Congrats on the purchase!
  11. Yup, we kinda abused the fuckers and hurt their feelings, and they were never heard from again. Agreed. On a related note, since I haven't been to head-fi in months I have no clue who the morons are besides the ones who get pointed out by fellow head-case members. Gets a little hard to decide who needs to have a bit of sense smacked into them to straighten up and who needs to be mocked & abused until they leave.
  12. Maybe you need to stop looking the threads which were started by your fellow retards from Head-fi. Here's a hint even a moron can understand: In this forum, we bash products which are shit. Some of us do, some of us don't, but we respect his opinions on audio design because he knows what he's talking about. This statement is so retarded that answering it is pointless. People who actually understand circuit design have the right to tell those who don't to go blow themselves when they start talking out of their asses.
  13. You need to learn to love the bass. Bass is good, bass is your friend.
  14. Too much to expect from Jude that is. Daily backups are what I'd expect from any competantly run board, however as we all know head-fi was anything but.
  15. You need to get one of these. Yes, it really does sound good.
  16. Clearly high-end. This is the good stuff.
  17. People who say "this amp fucking sucks donkey balls" at meets, tend not to get invited to future meets, unless that person is a celebrity or something. Considering that people here have had expensive furniture ruined by his amps among other things, plus a fair number of us actually understand circuit design, we have reason to dislike Ray's products. RSA is basically the Bose of headphone amps.
  18. If you don't know the answer to this question, I suggest putting down your headphones and I don't know, going out and listening to some live music so that you know what music sounds like.
  19. Oh bullshit. Here, let me help you out by quoting your entire post, in context. So how would you like to explain the bolded parts in your own post? Let me guess, "that's not what I meant, what I really meant was..."
  20. That's just sad. Daily backups are probably a bit too much to expect, but you'd think they do a backup every couple weeks or so. Over a year without proper backups is literally something out of a Dilbert comic.
  21. Let's try this again. Commercial or DIY? Commercial or DIY? Commercial or DIY? Commercial or DIY?
  22. Tyll burned him good, I can't remember exactly what he said, but everyone was laughing at jagwire afterwards.
  23. Maybe you'd like to tell me which one of these is DIY and which one is a high-end commercial product.
  24. It's exactly the same, but completely different.
  25. Grawk hates EVERYBODY. He's an equal opportunities hater.
