  1. A skate sharpening, some hockey tape, and arena rental fees. Hockey season starts tomorrow, oh yeah!
  2. Just got back from a visit to head-fi member Roam's place to get my surplus store 2A3's tested. Anyway, a couple more nice choices came up while we were talking. The Wright Sound AU-10SE is a nice single-ended 300B using the same tubes as the Coincident but with LC coupling like the Cardinal X2 so it can push the 300B into A2 without farting out. It now comes with O-netics transformers made by Bud Purvine, these are really good tranformers. Also from Wright Sound is the AU-15, which is a push-pull 2A3. Also has O-netics transformers now, though we're not sure if they're Bud's latest version which are said to be kinkless, with effectively no zero-crossing distortion.
  3. I'll just have to go back to my K340 rig instead of my RS-1. Not a big deal for me since I enjoyed my K340 for a long time and still like it a lot. Denon 650F CD player: $40 shipped on ebay My DIY tube amp: ~$150 in parts K340: ~$130 when I bought it, I think they're around $200 now. DIY cables: $15-20 in parts
  4. I think a key factor is that markl listens with the volume cranked up to "11", while as far as I know, Hirsch does not.
  5. You're right, she doesn't make music, she makes softcore porn videos(nsfw)
  6. Mahler. I've heard so many great things about his symphonies and how they're suppose to epitomize the human experience or something, and bring you to tears. I borrowed a couple of Mahler CD's from the library and spent the next couple hours being bored to tears. I can't figure out what's so great about his music. Ani DiFranco. Don't get her music. It just doesn't work. Bjork. See above. I still don't get it. Dream Theater. The music has no soul, yeah it's technical yada yada yada, but it doesn't connect at all. Pink Floyd's DSOTM album. If I hear it again in the next year or so I'm going to puke.
  7. Read up on the joys of Peak Oil, our real big fucking problem is a lot closer than most people think. Dealing with its effects will forge the next "greatest generation".
  8. I say burn his ass, he'll keep lying and talking shit as long as he thinks he can get away with it. When it becomes clear to him that he'll be ruthlessly humiliated for being an assclown, he'll either shape up or leave. Of course the problem is some people will hate you, and as you put it, think you're being bitchy. Personally I think that reflects more on them than anything else, they're like basically teenage brats sitting at the adults' table and trying to butt their way into the conversation and tell the adults what to do. When this happens in real life, the adults will go "shut the fuck up and go sit with the rest of the kids", and I feel the same applies on forums. I've slightly lost the analogy here, but point is this; doing the right thing will get you hated on by some people, good ain't always popular and popular ain't necessarily good.
  9. Yup, it more or less screws right in. The dealer said it was something called an SME mount, and that's about as much as I know. Apparently it's pretty old school or something.
  10. You might be looking at one of these in the future. It's got big thumping groove and mojo, in short, it's addictively fun. You ain't heard bass and weight till you've heard this baby.
  11. Have you thought about making a tube amp or something with exposed high voltage parts and getting the failed candidates to electrocute themselves?

  13. To me at least, Senns only sound good with a vinyl rig. To be honest, I'm not so sure about how well they scale, I personally think my Grado 225 and RS-1 scale every bit as well if not better than my 580.
  14. CCS loads for the output tubes on my tube amp. Probably going to build Gary Pimm's self bias CCS.
  15. Sample variations, I'd bet. I've heard a 650 with slightly less bass than my 580 and another 650 with almost as much bass as a PS-1, all out of the same source and amp.
  16. You've figured it out, most manufacturers haven't. The fancy material drivers have all sorts of ugly breakup modes among other things which craps up the sound and requires overly complicated crossovers to tame. You probably ran into their crap ones. The 12G40 or 12MW/Nd for instance are pretty much flat from 200-2000Hz with much lower distortion than you'll find in most other drivers. Choose nice linear drivers so you don't have to put compensation elements all over the place. Stick the bass driver as close to the floor as possible so the floor mirror-images the driver and gives you extra gain down low. Put a pair of efficient 12" or 15" drivers close to the floor and it'll give you a ton of clean bass with fairly little power. If someone decided to build an SET with kW range transmitter tubes, it would have killer dynamics.
  17. Because manufacturers like using "audiophile approved" drivers with crap-ass efficiency and low power handling along with overly complicated crossovers, but OMG they're made of carbon fiber kevlar magnesium titanium beryllium alloys and shit! Or you could get some pro-audio drivers from Beyma or 18sound with efficiencies of around 97-100dB/w/m which can also handle several hundred watts without frying.
  18. The owner says it's a big block of maple made from gluing together smaller pieces of maple. He had some woodworker guy make the maple base and get the holes & cutouts drilled in the right places.
  19. Because you touch yourself at night.
  20. Those were good times back in the day...
  21. I'd say this is one of those cases where what goes on in Dusty Chalk's bedroom, stays in his bedroom.
  22. And get a nice wooden base built up for the Garrard.
  23. Holy crap, how does any work get done in that disaster area?
  24. Looks like it got put through the tumble-dry cycle in a dryer with no fabric softener.
