Know of any cheap true 24/96 USB DACs?
Grahame replied to yoginasser's topic in Home Source Components
Only if it uses an integer multiplier, otherwise what do you do with the partial bits? (Hint: if an upsample followed by downsample isn't an identity transform, what just happened?) -
Correct, although on the latest versions of the server software, it will downsample to 24/48 using sox in software for output to the SB 3. As it happens I'm listening to some 24/88.2 material on the Transporter at the moment. And very nice it is too!

Well... The transporter was serving up redbook flacs off a netbook hiding behind Al's Mac Stack. When the Modwright Transporter turned up, I added it to the system, and synced it with the stock Transporter. Outputs then went to Al's Luxman P1 allowing comparison. Not a direct comparison as we used the stock SE output, and the balanced output on the Modwright. Initial differences were more subtle when volume matched the outputs by lowering the volume on the Modright by some 10 dB. Differences at that point under meet conditions ... They both sounded nice to me (thanks to the HD-800's and P1 ). Modright had a more "tubey" signature to to its output, which I guess is the intent of the mod, so in that respect it succeeded. Which signature sounds better to you, given the relative costs, is a matter of individual preference. The mod seemed well executed, and added substantial physical mass to the Transporter. The Transporter has a 30-day satisfaction guarantee from Logitech so you can have an extended try before you buy. It may be worth getting a system set up in advance if you don't already have the software etc, to maximize your usable time with it. that said the Transporter can be used just as a DAC as it has Optical, coax, BNC, and XLR digital connectors (no usb as that's missing the point ) Given the prices at this level, some people are happy with an SB3 + external DAC . You could always use a tube preamp / headphone amp if that's where your interests lie.

It really is about the content. Recent conversation highlights. "But the picture quality is sooo much better" "Pity it does nothing about the quality of the acting/writing/directing, then"

I'm happy with a HDX-1000 based solution for my video bits. Given that it can play DVD ISO images (upsampling over hdmi) directly off its internal hard drive, or off a network share, it removes the need to spin shiny discs in the viewing area. Latest firmware has DTS stereo downmix, using the transporter as a DAC, just because, so the 12" Celestions in the Ditton 66's work fine, removing the need for a subwoofer, or can use via (Balanced) headphones so as not to annoy the neighbors in the next apartment. Also handles mkv files for higher resolution stuff. I'm happy. Video review: http://videos.cnet.co.uk/39041832.htm

from iPod modder makes a case for going retro For most the iconic music player's white earbuds are a fashion statement enough, but Brisbane graphics designer Josh Darrah has always thought modern stylings were crass compared to old fashioned wood.

Happy Belated Birthday Mike. Since we missed you Birthday, does it mean you get to be the same age for another year?

^^^ Fair enough, but I suspect not everyone has their mother record the show off air, and send the resulting VHS tapes by carrier pigeon.

Kids Today! It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the tape. That was not the only naive mistake that I made; I mistook the metal/normal switch on the Walkman for a genre-specific equaliser, but later I discovered that it was in fact used to switch between two different types of cassette.
