Maybe you'd have more luck if you got out more Or take Sherwood up on his offer?
  3. To echo/restate what beefy said. You headphone amp will take line level inputs. So you will want to connect line level outputs from your Denon to the line level inputs of your headphone amp. Sometimes you can have variable line level outs (where the volume control on the Denon controls the volume on the outputs). you probably don't want that. You want fixed level outputs (volume control on Denon has no effect on volume of output always full output) - as that's what the volume control on the headphone amp is for Then the final part is muting the speaker output when using headphones, without muting the headphone output - the correct fixed level output should get you what you want. I trust you still have the manual, so you know what all of these do I'd start with the red and white ones labeld "OUT"

  13. Short answer: You lucky, lucky bastard. Longer answer: Make your old man happy. (He is probably proud of you already I'd guess). The Net Audio 405 Mk3 Upgrade looks pretty good value for the price. (may be you could acquire another donor 405 and go down the dual monobloc route ) probably cheaper than a new 909 .. If he wants some Quad ESL's he's unlikely to be unhappy with either the 57 or the 63. Depends what you can source I'd guess. Other folks have suggested that if you don't like one you could swap / sell on the other without too much of a financial hit if you buy wisely. The main win though is having a clean slate/blank canvas for the room. Given 10 ft ceilings, and a sizeable room you should be able to come close to ideal speaker and listening position placement. Have fun, and let us know how you get on.

  23. Only if it uses an integer multiplier, otherwise what do you do with the partial bits? (Hint: if an upsample followed by downsample isn't an identity transform, what just happened?)
  24. Correct, although on the latest versions of the server software, it will downsample to 24/48 using sox in software for output to the SB 3. As it happens I'm listening to some 24/88.2 material on the Transporter at the moment. And very nice it is too!
  25. Well... The transporter was serving up redbook flacs off a netbook hiding behind Al's Mac Stack. When the Modwright Transporter turned up, I added it to the system, and synced it with the stock Transporter. Outputs then went to Al's Luxman P1 allowing comparison. Not a direct comparison as we used the stock SE output, and the balanced output on the Modwright. Initial differences were more subtle when volume matched the outputs by lowering the volume on the Modright by some 10 dB. Differences at that point under meet conditions ... They both sounded nice to me (thanks to the HD-800's and P1 ). Modright had a more "tubey" signature to to its output, which I guess is the intent of the mod, so in that respect it succeeded. Which signature sounds better to you, given the relative costs, is a matter of individual preference. The mod seemed well executed, and added substantial physical mass to the Transporter. The Transporter has a 30-day satisfaction guarantee from Logitech so you can have an extended try before you buy. It may be worth getting a system set up in advance if you don't already have the software etc, to maximize your usable time with it. that said the Transporter can be used just as a DAC as it has Optical, coax, BNC, and XLR digital connectors (no usb as that's missing the point ) Given the prices at this level, some people are happy with an SB3 + external DAC . You could always use a tube preamp / headphone amp if that's where your interests lie.
