Help Putting Together a Fanless PC
Grahame replied to dsavitsk's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
HDX has a built in torrent client. never got round to using it as I ended up using the mini 9. The Bone looks interesting. As with all these players, hardware establishes the potential, but the software makes or breaks the experience, and how much of the potential is realized, if at all. Hence the attractions of a HTPC running commodity software, with a big user base/support network. -
Help Putting Together a Fanless PC
Grahame replied to dsavitsk's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
I addressed similar requirements with 3 dedicated devices 1: Main PC - quiet Antec P182 Main build, wake on lan in another room. It does't have to be silent, as its not the main listening room (lounge), and when I'm in the same room its headphones, or i'm listening/watching so I don't tend to notice the background noise. Wake on Lan means its only on when it needs to be 2: a re-purposed Dell mini 9 with SSD and external USB Hard drive. On 24/7 , but at only 5-15W vs 200W draw of the main PC. Can administer remotely to task it . Shuffle stuff off it when ratio is reached. Network shares So I can access stuff as soon as it is complete. Sits by the router. 3: Dedicated video playback device HDX-1000 (with added 2.5 inch internal laptop drive) . Fanless , 1080p HDMI output , networked (wired) to the main PC where addition storage is available by the myiHome server software or shares. Can't recall the last time I played a shiny silver disk, as its all ripped, then the ISO image played back over the network. The HDX software lacks polish compared to other solutions, but plays what I want, and is controllable via a remote. which is what you want. Thats just my approach and it works for me. -
Dollar Day races at golden gate fields with some neighbors as a cheap afternoon out! They forgot to mention the $1 Ice Cream Bars! Joanne described it as $1 for fizzy water (well it was Bud Light ) Great Weather, Nice location, and Joanne and I managed to leave with $7.60 intact from our original $20 stake after betting $2 each on nine races. Can't retire just yet.

Globally, that may be a minority viewpoint. The World Cup was first televised in 1954 and is now the most widely-viewed and followed sporting event in the world, exceeding even the Olympic Games. The cumulative audience of all matches of the 2006 World Cup is estimated to be 26.29 billion.[1] 715.1 million individuals watched the final match of this tournament (a ninth of the entire population of the planet). The 2006 World Cup draw, which decided the distribution of teams into groups, was watched by 300 million viewers.[37] FIFA World Cup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 2010 FIFA World Cup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I was using google maps to check out the dining options nearby (i.e. within walking distance) and they all seem to be a bit "expense account airport hotel restaurant" As for a little escape, is the W xyz bar trendy enough for you at the the local Aloft ? This keeps coming up on the slim devices forum. Anyway I see two main reasons for the inferiority of AES/EBU. 1. XLRs are horrible RF connectors. In order to send a square wave fairly faithfully the interface must support a bandwidth many times higher than the frequency of the square wave. For the signals in question that is getting well up into the RF spectrum where the XLRs are terrible. The impedance varies radically with frequency which will cause all kinds of bizarre reflections. The choice of XLR was a very poor choice. 2. Output voltage. The S/PDIF electrical spec is 0.5V into 75ohms, but the AES/EBU is 3-5V into 110 ohms. Think about that for a second, what happens when you put 5volts across 110 ohms? You get almost 50mA of current flowing. This means the driver sitting in the source box has to be able to dump between 30-50ma into the cable. That causes huge current spikes in the power and ground pins of the driver chip which is going to cause big noise spikes in the power and ground planes of the board. If you are not extremely careful that is going to cause significant jitter in the output signal. All modern high speed interfaces use less than 0.5V signal. As far as I can tell the XLRs were chosen because studios had lots of microphone cables and wanted to use them. Because they are such lousy RF transmission lines they had to go with high voltages to make sure there was some signal left at the end. Maybe Tyll can tell us whats in this paper?
