  1. Re: 1. "Cloud" needs to be your own service account. etc Multiple Services - avoid single point of failure (assuming you can determine they use disparate systems. Doesn't help if they are all (virtually) hosted by "BigCloudCo" But at this point you are moving from a "HomeBrew" solution to a startup business plan. Indeed. But does it matter? In a large enough system, something is always going wrong. So deal with it. To the point where you don't notice. Netflix is the tech poster child for such issues. "3. The best way to avoid failure is to fail constantly." "One of the first systems our engineers built in AWS is called the Chaos Monkey. The Chaos Monkey’s job is to randomly kill instances and services within our architecture. If we aren’t constantly testing our ability to succeed despite failure, then it isn’t likely to work when it matters most — in the event of an unexpected outage." https://medium.com/netflix-techblog/5-lessons-weve-learned-using-aws-1f2a28588e4c
  2. This is a good intro as to why the cloud is not just someone else's computer (even though it is - it's not your computer / NAS), there are a bunch of infrastructure issues that should be better managed (at scale) - because that's how they make scale work ... http://www.zdnet.com/article/stop-saying-the-cloud-is-just-someone-elses-computer-because-its-not/ Music bits -> DAC is just a protocol issue that requires people agree on a standard (hah!) So until then we have Source -> (proprietary) streaming protocol #1 > (proprietary) Streamer Client - > legacy digital audio interface (s/pdif, toslink, usb) -> DAC rather than collapsing the stack to Cloud based Service -> music bits over "standard internet protocol" -> (Commodity?) DAC -> beautiful, beautiful music
  3. Makes perfect sense to me. Who is the source of your streaming data? (Hint: External provider tidal) I need a client that understands the streaming data .... How useful is that client when that provider goes away> .... If however I use standard protocols ... and can implement my own provider of that streaming data ... hosted in the cloud ... ( or elsewhere) I'm not reliant on transient, fickle, providers .... Some people have already tried to put slimserver / logitech media server in a docker container .... https://hub.docker.com/r/larsks/logitech-media-server/ same approach could be tried with any other streamer source server / program and use someone else's (hosted) infrastructure, so you don't have to host / manage it on-prem Voila - Music Streaming, As A Service - MSAAS! Sorry for all the nerd buzzwords, but I've just seen a bunch of presentations on on similar topics ... As A Service

  20. Indeed. 400K Brits impacted due to a "process failure" "Regrettably, the investigation shows that a file containing UK consumer information may potentially have been accessed. This was due to a process failure, corrected in 2016, which led to a limited amount of UK data being stored in the US between 2011 and 2016." 21. Just to point out that the PBS Video app has all 10 episodes up now, in both the broadcast version, and the explicit language version. The Colonel Kurtz quote seems appropriate.
  22. "The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide credit reporting companies — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months. The FCRA promotes the accuracy and privacy of information in the files of the nation’s credit reporting companies. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, enforces the FCRA with respect to credit reporting companies" https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0155-free-credit-reports so https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action and then stagger the requests four months apart ... start with Equifax now ...

  24. Indeed. Predicted (check article dates) "“Visa [which last year told me rather vehemently that chip and signature was quite enough for the American market] has pushed PIN in other geographies. The investment is already there. If you look at the U.S. market, we have a unique set of consumers. As one issuer put it —’We are not convinced Americans can learn to do two new things at once.’ ” Sadly she did not name the source of that comment." https://www.forbes.com/sites/tomgroenfeldt/2014/06/23/more-secure-credit-cards-with-chips-coming-to-the-u-s/ "You're about to get a new credit card ... and it's an epic failure" http://money.cnn.com/2015/03/25/technology/credit-card-chips-hackers/index.html
