  1. It looks like that amp was modified. I don't use those gray resistors. The capacitor lead should be plugged into ground on the terminal block, it reduces noise
  2. I hope it's still fresh
  3. Nate will solve this. He will cut the DA-500 in half
  4. WTF? I hope this guy has two because I just paid for it..
  5. These pictures aren't being posted by anyone with an agenda to benefit the competition...so it's very different.
  6. The datasheet only says the matched pair will have a differential Vbe of 0-10mV, at a test condition of Vce=6V and Ic=2mA. You can probably do better than this if you get enough 2sa970/2sc2240 to match and bond them together
  7. Not just in the power supply, but before the regulator... Not sure what you mean...are you saying its not a biased test because Black Gates should have been #1 based on price? I'd say it's convenient that Elna Silmic II came in 1st, since the Black Gates are discontinued..
  8. Doesn't look like it was a blind test, right?
  9. The output voltage is measured stator to stator so your numbers are all double. So you'd need +/-300V. But the amp runs on +/-350V, because it does not swing all the way to the rails. There is no relationship between gain and voltage swing. A KGSS built with a gain of 500 and one built with a gain of 1000 have identical max output power. It's possible with a low output source you wouldn't be able to realize that max output with a gain of 500. But 99.9% of the time it just means you'll have the volume knob 2 or 3 clicks higher than with a gain of 1000.
  10. I don't know anything about the design of the Millett amp, however most sources with both balanced/unbalanced outputs have their unbalanced outputs go through an additional active stage (usually an op-amp as a differential to single ended converter). So if what you say about the Millett amp is true, you're going to convert to single ended either in the source or the amp. I'd probably pick the transformer assuming it is a high quality one
  11. I didn't create the International Symbol for Breastfeeding, I only suggested it
  12. Yes, go straight for the Evo. Nobody has seen pics yet.
  13. If you have enough money, you can get your own chips made. I think Wadia did that for something
  14. Most of those parts are for the discrete I/V or output stage. An op-amp crams it all into a tiny chip. A discrete Grado RA-1 would probably look like a very complex design
  15. Inside of the Krell SACD standard. Equal number of parts on the other side of the board, more output stages needed since it's multi-channel SACD. You could make an argument that this is a simpler design than the Meridian, of course that's going to fall on deaf ears.
  16. I agree. There are always posts on Head-Fi suggesting that manufacturers burn-in the equipment to save buyers time. Well, that would kill the benefits of burn-in wouldn't it? Maybe they are burned in sometimes and you just don't know it. It's a cute way to prevent immediate impressions or comparisons that are negative but still allow the positive at any time. The hourly updates are free advertising. Even if you don't feel like exploiting the benefits of burn-in, there is definitely pressure to keep quiet if you don't believe in burn-in, power cords, magic audio pebbles or things like that. So good for Pete for being honest about it.
  17. The Pico is about the size of the RCA jacks on that so I'm not sure it qualifies as portable. I'm sure its very well designed though
  18. That's going to be a long one. Hope you can get it in the mail for the meet k thx
  19. I get there around 12 on friday. I would be looking to go to In N Out, then check in at the meet hotel, then venture back out for another In N Out
  20. Just wait a few more years and someone will be paying 2k just to get the black gates out of it
  21. After the BHSE is done, I'll finish it. Hopefully another 6 months is enough. Estimated price 3k
  22. here is some detail on this amp: - Black Gate capacitors - No XLR input/switch - Single GoldPt stepped attenuator
