Question of the day at SoCal meet: "do you have any high-res on here?" And then a look of disappointment when I say no. I might as well be admitting I use cheap cables. Bad for business. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

i have a youtube video with instructions on adjusting it, but you probably dont need to do it unless its a very different kind of EL34/not really an EL34

only objective test i've ever seen on them was a THD comparison when using electrolytic caps on the output of a speaker amp into an 8 ohm load, so a lot of power. The Black Gates had lower THD at low frequencies as you got near the corner frequency of the cap/resistor filter that is formed. However you could get the same result by using a larger capacitance cheap electrolytic. and since Black Gates tend to be much larger than cheap electrolytics for the same capacitance, the larger capacitance cap might not use any more space

ive used a weller WTCPT for years and just bought a 3rd one. the local electronics company uses them as well which is probably where i got the idea. they've worked well for everything i've done. before that i had everyone's My First Soldering Iron, the Weller WLC100

the club is doing the route i linked on march 30, doesnt have to be that date though or with the club. they dont have the april schedule posted yet. april 4-5 ill be at the NY meet. the week after that is open. week after that i think im going to the Charlotte meet

https://www.cvillebikeclub.org/schedule.php I think these used to be 8am or 9am, 10am seems doable. thats about the time we rolled out for the lake house rides. or, could be done at another time but follow one of their routes. https://www.cvillebikeclub.org/maps/Bacon_Hollow.pdf haven't done this one, it heads up to the border of the shenandoah national park then turns around when the pavement runs out. 2,310ft over 33 miles

anyone interested in doing a spring central VA ride? something around 30 mi./3k ft.

i did find a useful feature in evernote, the ability to easily add searchable text on top of a PDF. so if i had scanned a schematic or drawing that had no searchable or relevant text, i could just add a title/keywords to it and those would be searchable. I'm sure there is software that does this on the computer but not sure if it's integrated with the scanner software to make it easy to do as the scanning happens

me too, but i'd still just buy the CD and rip it. the downloads cost way too much considering they have no resale value. at this point, there's hardly any evidence people can tell the difference between 128kbps properly encoded Mp3 and 16/44.1 -- maybe select passages on an ABX test by trained people. i dont want 192 or 256 either, but no one can tell 16/44.1 from 24/96 or 24/192. i'm still waiting for the blind study that shows someone can do it. if i was paying money and it was the same price i would obviously take the higher res files, but for playback portably there is a significant cost in storage space and battery life the primary possibility for the high-res being better is that they will start getting different masters that will sound better in 16/44.1 than the retail CD in 16/44.1. but right now the market is still way too small to think that will happen. -
got the scanner, now to figure out what to do with it. can make fully searchable PDFs with the included software of course. Trying to decide if there's much point to Evernote for 10 years worth of invoices, bank statements, receipts, etc. The ones that aren't already on the computer in some searchable form. I can't think of many examples of needing to pull up a 2007 Digikey receipt on my phone or iPad, though the searchable PDFs will be useful when trying to figure out when something was last ordered or a part #...and to get rid of the paper. So maybe Evernote isn't going to add anything here?

i eagerly await the blind tests showing people can hear the difference between 16/44.1 and 24/96 or 24/192 on the Pono -

here's a comparison of the profile with the Pico, for those who are familiar with it. Except the Pico is 2.75" long (plus knob) while this is 5" long, or just barely longer than an iPhone 5 which is considered a small phone -

the specs say it's 5x2x1", 4.5oz, 8 hr battery life. some of the photos are making the triangle look taller than it really is. i thought it was an equilateral triangle until i looked closely. -

Neil Young + good software (this is one area where all the other audiophile DAPs are fail) + good inputs/outputs = potential win. except for that triangle shape. -
