  1. yeah, it's strange now that I have a number of digital projects you find a lot of stuff just by playing around. The above is one example, another is how much better EI and r-core transformers sound than toroids, _for digital_, and how much better oversized transformers sound. YMMV of course, but it's been a fun and eye-opening experience for me to just try things and not just grab the thing with the best "specs" out there and be satisfied.
  2. yeah, agreed. I don't know what the deal is... there are a particular digital build at diyaudio where people are using a simple LM7808 with Black Gates on each side, and I was skeptical and setup a jig to A/B and it sounded much better than a sigma11 supply to the 2 or 3 people that were over at my place comparing. I don't really understand it myself, but felt unmotivated to really find out why.
  3. the question would be how well does the sigma11 perform with small current draw. has anyone seen any tests on this? I tried a couple of the circuits on my DAC that requires 6 power supplies and the sigma22 didn't sound quite right. edit: heh, my psu looks very similar to the RAKK psu, but with a preregulator and a r-core transformer.
  4. everything that this advertisement writer ever pitched:
  5. I think mono blocks would be harder. Since you have 2 channels on a single board, so you'll either have to use L brackets on each end and align that to the heat sinks on each side, or some weird single heat sink design. My experience is mounting directly on the heat sink is much easier to do, and less error prone.
  6. my heeeerroo.... saving the ESP-950 from FOTM once again!
  7. what Kevin said.
  8. deepak: I find that these cans are really just improvement of the he60 sound signature, and as such sound "different" than the SR-007. They are more forward, almost in a brash way and have very "impressive" bass and sweet sounding highs, both are strengths IMHO. As much as a KGSS is an upgrade for these, the 620v bias is probably more important. Then there is the recable.... They are really incomparable in the state you currently have them. In some cases I do prefer them to the Stax, usually when I want more bite to my music. I'm not a huge Grado fan, but perhaps this difference could be likened to a Grado sound, without the annoying soundstage collapse and other Grado "issues". They are a hard sound to pin down, that's for sure... and the relatively few people that heard them in what I would say is their "best" operating point, makes this even harder.
  9. I have a SR-007 cable for sale ... I'm not recabling them though.
  10. well, the patent in question is "super-symmetry" and there's a lot of ink spilled on it. amb did the right thing and got permission from Nelson and all is good in the hood. I was just being snarky / a NP-fanboy.
  11. I'm closer
  12. <asshat>yawn, build a real Nelson Pass design, not some random copycat</asshat>
  13. dude, quit the hype (until I find one). I saw one on Ebay and it went for $250-ish and I think $235 was my max bid. That was probably 1 year ago though.
  14. x2 on the Air Tight. Do they have the ZYX Atmos in Singapore as well? I'd love to hear it someday.
  15. about 80% of the effort that went into building the entire amp in the first place.
  16. burn-in? Ray's amps inject a subtle hypnotic track over the output signal that can easily be mistaken for distortion. 500 hours is the amount of time before your totally under the power of the amp and start the fan-boy chanting ritual.
  17. yes, just order it from here: Lansing Instrument Enclosures Home Page
  18. yeah, Peter Daniel owner of The Audio Zone: index His reference DAC is a modified bidat. Lots about it at diyaudio. same with me and John. He basically told me how to do all the mods to a few of their products. Great guy!
  19. yup. There is a single bidat I would pay that for, but I know the modder and he's my hero, so there....
  20. yeah, did you see that bidat that is/was on Audiogon.. $5.5k? crap...
  21. sorry, I meant the seller's price on Audiogon is more than fair
  22. the jacks are just wired that way.
  23. and seeing as you cannot get the BG caps anymore and last I saw some people were asking $200 each.... personally, I think the price is fair.
