  1. those are cow bells on the headphone icon...
  2. revision with different knob layout...
  3. will do. Just playing around with that anyways. Do you feel that the order of the knobs and connectors makes sense? I wish I could find a nice momentary switch that looked good and was the scale of the (tiny) Lemo jack, but no dice. Something like this perhaps, or does it look a bit pedestrian? (can find those anywhere in stock around here though...)
  4. so, I'll post my panel tomorrow, but... in general.. I have a very large VFD display that I'm putting in the middle and trying to squeeze a small IR receiver in this spot. Then I have 2 knobs and a small Lemo jack as well as a place for a small power button (momentary, but I haven't found a good switch that matches the scale of the 4-pin Lemo connector that will be on the front too... the Bulgin switches look nice, but they just look too big). At this point, the layout moving from left to right is: knob power VFD Lemo knob... but I'm just not super satisfied with it. I ditched the ideas of using buttons and everything will be remote controlled, including perhaps the power if it doesn't look right on the front. I guess it's hard to get feedback without the design, but hey ... any other layouts I could think about? The knobs are 1" in diameter and the VFD is Newhaven M0220MD-202MDAR1-3. The Lemo connector is EGG.00.304.CLL. The entire panel is around 12" wide and not much taller than the VFD, just to give you an idea. ... just not happy with the look, consider what I'll be paying for the panel ... you know how it is.
  5. I think 60dB is about as much as you will ever see from a non hybrid design. I could be wrong though.
  6. exactly my opinion as well. Thing is that makes this discovery problematic for me is that I don't like what step-ups do to the sound. I had the S&B silver wound unit for around 3-4 months with an upper end Zyx (and in fact, a friend still has both my old S&B and cartridge and lives 5 minutes away, so it's easy comparison) and it just didn't do it for me, when compared to direct amplification. So, this conclusion pretty much limits me to solid state phono units, or a SS head unit with tube phono (haven't tried this yet though).
  7. you're drawing less than half the current you will when the board is populated. I bet your voltage will be fine once everything is up and going.
  8. What voltage are you getting across R2?
  9. yes, that would make sense...
  10. man I this was going to be about something good, like:
  11. he'd be "doing" that after he got high...
  12. I have plans to use styrene box caps for the RIAA filter and need to parallel "a few" to get the right values. We'll see once they get here if this is feasible or not.
  13. nope, those are Steve's. I have something totally crazy lined up for mine... waiting for some parts to arrive. Let's just say that I have 100 or so caps per board. The replacement zeners shipped on Friday, as well as a few more parts. I have some matched parts on hand I can ship out for the "over eager" They're matched by Idss, which is sorta the "normal" way of doing things. Anyways, maybe I'll make my first shipment on Friday of next week? The next week I'll be on a business trip to visit "The Evil Empire" in Seattle, so I'll be out of town... Have you decided on a case, or perhaps tested the unregulated supply portion of the circuit? If you're going to do some sort of LEDs, I'd attach them to this portion of the circuit, before the boards.
  14. hm, I might be interested in some quick and dirty transplants ... I'm looking for a pair of low-Z headphones and perhaps these might fit the bill... what's the standard cheap donor recommendation for these?
  15. I'm lazy but.... 2 questions: A.) what are the impedance of the SFI drivers B.) swt61, did you ever whip up something with these? C.) Morbier
  16. he's the only person I trust to do a switching supply properly... but yeah, the older gear is pretty sweet.
  17. next meet you attend, let me know and I will see what I can do. I just acquired a second Bitstream (stock not modded)... The optical is busted though... shipping would be pretty cheap, as it's pretty small. Doesn't hold a candle to the modded versions, but it's a taste
  18. yeah, join the team!
  19. I dunno, people are just going to recommend what they have. I have an older Muse Electronics Model 9 Signature and recently had a chance to demo one of Kevin Halverson's newest players, the Erato II and I really liked it... a lot. It's probably the only hi-res player I've heard that has a very natural, fluid presentation. For example, I find most hi-res players to be artificially detailed. There is a certain "wow factor" in for example the Cambridge Audio players in the top end, but when you sit down and really listen, this extra resolution comes at a price and other things suffer. I find that components that have this sort of immediate wow factor rarely stand the test of time in my rig. Other than single box units, there are some good external DAC options out there as well... just depends on your setup and sonic goals.
  20. told ya.. we have some more that will be released soon.
  21. cool! after you've soldered them, try again.
  22. finally getting around to finishing this. Waiting on FPE to see if they can do elliptical holes
