I tried the Hoffman french press method just now. It is a very good cup of coffee. Perhaps a bit less bitter than my usual method. I generally use between 31 and 33 grams of coffee to ~16oz of water so not far off his recommended dosage. The method I've used of late: 1) freshly medium coarse ground of 31 grams of good coffee into a double walled steel french press (Freiling unit that has been great for many years) and I start a 4 minute and 30 second kitchen timer; 2) add roughly 8 oz of just under 200 degree filtered water from my fridge heated in a Bonavita gooseneck kettle that's really grown on me; 3) stir with a tablespoon steadily and not too fast for a 5 count; 4) add the remaining 8 pz of water and stir another 5 seconds steadily; and 5) plunge steadily and slowly once the timer goes off. Method stolen from George Howell's Terroir Coffee site. Happy caffeinating.... HS

Very interesting, Aura. Thank you for sharing. I'll give this a run over the weekend. Fortunately, I have a double walled stainless steel press. What I'm wondering about is how long the brew is left to sit and without cover to help retain heat. Definitely worth a spin. Great to see different techniques being explored. HS

Do they roast in a medium style generally, darker or does it vary by bean? I'm off the super roasted stuff, but do love me a quality medium roasted whole bean. Generally stick to Central and South American and African grown. French press and Chemex now. No fancy espresso machine yet. Maybe in retirement with a bigger kitchen... Have to say I've really enjoyed the Niche Zero. It's over the top from a cost perspective but WTH... HS

There have been articles suggestion just that...the HC motor will end up in the Durango. The SRT version sold well. I loved my Jeep SRT. If someone didn't hit it while my poor wife was driving it home after picking her father up from hospital (she was A-OK), I'd probably still have it. I wanted the TH so it was only a matter of time, but I was trying to hold out. Jeep only had 26k miles on it after 4 years. Great commute I have...with purpose. To be frank, the technology in all the HC based vehicles (and most MOPARs) is old as hell. No reason the block should not be aluminum...along with several suspension components. But...they love the V8 (as do I) and they throw power at them to overcome weight. They are roomy and I can modify them relatively easily to extract a good bit of incremental power (calibration stuff is a bit of a nightmare but I have a good man I've worked with since 2010). So I buy them. And...the Scandinavian cow, carbon fiber and Harman Kardon stereo in my TH are yummy. I'm old and high maintenance I figure. Apparently I also love depreciating assets... HS

Great straight line car. Not so much for turning....LOL. The suspension was like an old brass bed. I was getting ready to modify it when it occurred to me that it is a perfectly well engineered vehicle to do exactly what it is supposed to do...run 1320 ft in a straight line. They are not that common....why mess with it so I sold mine. Wasn’t difficult, especially with the black and Demonic red leather interior. I’m now modifying a perfectly fine Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk (hellcat based motor). Why not mess with one’s DD...LOL HS

Power to weight...especially torque is a deal. The Demon I owned for a year and half or so was powerful, but nowhere near my turbo car. Tires were important and I rarely drove either in damp conditions unless the random Houston shower reared its head. Super soft compounds on both were critical for managing the power and even then they'd easily get sideways if you didn't know what you were doing. Corvettes and Vipers...that and earlier 911's. Potential train wrecks abound. Not the only ones, but boy they do seem to ring a bell statistically. vroom vroom.... Love me some RWHP. HS

They also were not selling. Very low takers in the end. Interestingly they are number 1 or way up there in cars that get people hurt. I think it’s the typical middle aged but a fast car and assume that you can drive it. Vipers and Vettes...seen too much crazy crap with guys leaving Cars & Coffee and darn near putting them into the crowd. You need a lot of seat time. What year? I understand cabin temps were a bit rough in the early models and they got better with time. Great looking ride...mean! Congrats! HS

I understand new Niche Zeros will ship with this modification. Once they are available, we can secure one for the cost of shipping. In the reviews I read about the popcorning and that definitely happens, but I'm not at all bothered by a bean or two jumping around until they make it into the burr grinders. The argument they make here is the weight of the beans on top forcing the early beans through earlier. Heck...my palate could not differentiate two coffees before and after if I borrowed my pooches senses...LOL. I'll likely get it as it looks like a nice to have. I may or may not use it all the time as I feel it takes a bit away from the aesthetics of the machinery...I like being able to see down into the burrs but I'm broken that way. Engine covers on my cars generally don't last long... HS

Interesting, Aura. what African coffee are you drinking? The stuff I tend to buy is on the fruity side : Ethiopian, Rwandan. I find Indonesian coffee, particularly the Sumatran stuff, very “earthy”. Polite for it tastes like dirt...lol. I spent a year and a half there in the late ‘90’s. We loved it but not the coffee so much. HS

The Niche Zero arrived last week and I've gotten to use it. So did the Chemex. I chose the 6 cup which worked out well for my situation. I'm the only coffee drinker in the house, but if I have a guest I can certainly brew them a cup as well. The Niche is gorgeous and very substantially built. Is it worth the money? That's a relative thing IMO. It is excessive so I think best for the hardcore coffee drinkers that would make good use of it and/or those that really get into the aesthetics and function of the machine. It is pretty damn fun to use and look at. It has a lot of settings and because you can go well beyond the dial, and arguably need to for the finer or coarser grinds, it requires a bit of practice / experiment but nothing too complicated. The Chemex I am still experimenting with. Drinking a Rwandan Ruli now and it is AMAZING. It was damn good in the French press as well so it's solid coffee. The thing is there is a substantial difference with the Chemex. First...I love the French press. It makes delicious coffee simply IMO. You get ALL the coffee flavor and what comes with it. The Chemex is a much more polite cup of coffee...cleaner. Probably easier to drink. I'd liken it to cigar smoking...those that have been in it a long time I have found lean towards the more robust profiles. HS
