TKD 4CP-601 & 4CP-2500 4-gang volume pot and PCB GB
gepardcv replied to mwl168's topic in Do It Yourself
I like to mill 10mm panels from the front so that the volume knob is recessed, so I vote for standard length shafts. -

My observations match @johnwmclean's. I don't really want to disassemble my Carbon to check under the terminal blocks, but I never noticed flux on the side of the PCB opposite the one which I have been soldering. Maybe I'm just in denial. It would be great to find a nice alternative to Phoenix, but none of the connector blocks with the right spacing which I found are rated for ≥400V.

goldenreference low voltage power supply
gepardcv replied to kevin gilmore's topic in Do It Yourself
My turn to ask a stupid question; I'm still learning about transformers. How does the math for calculating rectified DC voltage work? I assumed that for a 2x22VAC transformer outputting +/-20VDC, the voltage drop is (2*22-2*20)=4V (is that right?). Some of that goes into the bridge. In that case, how can a 2x20VAC transformer end up with a +/-20VDC output? The voltage drop then comes out to 0V, with nothing left over for the bridge. -

For a Dynahi powered by a pair of GRLVs set for 30V output, what transformer specs should I go for? I was thinking 70VCT or 2x35VAC — is that too much? -

The price is good enough that I decided to add two 50k 601s to my order, along with extra PCBs. If no one else wants the 50k pots and we don't meet the minimum, then we can just drop them from the order. Edit: The spreadsheet price total column doesn't seem to account for the 50k column. -

I have no problem with the lead time and like the price. Still in for 3 units. How much imbalance would be considered out of spec? -

Why not use alpsquad2 or alpsquad3 from Kevin's site? I don't know the difference between those two, but they fit the Alps RK27 and the TKD 4CP-601. (The one on Birgir's DIY supplies page is smaller and TKD-only, but I don't think Gerbers for it are available.) -

I'm interested, too. (Though I don't need very many — probably 3 or so.) I paid something like 4500 JPY apiece when I ordered these from Japan about a year ago, but (1) the JPY rose by like 20% since then against the USD, (2) that doesn't include shipping or the deputy service commission. At today's exchange rate, 65 USD without shipping but including commission looks about right. Edit: One more thing — I only want 10k pots, but maybe other people want 50k? -
Sounds like you changed your mind from the time you reviewed the SR-009 (http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/comparing-world-class-headphones-stax-sr-009):

Does any kind person here have a 10k A-taper TKD 4CP-601 pot you'd be willing to sell me? (I could order from Japan, but I don't feel like waiting 6-8 weeks for it to arrive...)

If you're using the GRHV PSU, you might want to check (1) the bias supply's zeners to get them close to a total of 580V, and (2) get the resistors that control the rail voltages pretty close to each other.

Who said anything about need?

Read everything on the DIY forum here. This thread, the old Carbon group buy thread, the KGSSHV thread, probably the T2 thread, the generic electrostatic amp build thread. You are in luck, as a new group buy for Carbon PCBs just started, see http://www.head-case.org/forums/topic/12671-group-buy-carbon-v70/ If you have never built an amplifier before, the Dynalo is a safer and easier first project.

If the case and PCB layouts permit, mounting transistors directly to a heatsink would work well. Often, though, the boards do not fully fit on the side of a heatsink. In that case, nothing wrong with an aluminum bracket and a layer of thermal paste connected to a heatsink. Aluminum conducts heat very well, which is why it's used for heatsinks, and also why steel cooking pans and pots often have aluminum bottom plates.

The thread title says Carbon v7, but the spreadsheet says v6. I'm a bit confused... are there v7 boards available at all?

And don't forget to clean off the flux when you finish stuffing the boards... It's not supposed to be conductive, but not worth experimenting with at high voltage. I use 99% isopropyl, easily available from Amazon. Not are about availability outside the US.

A fun take on the old staples. She tackles tempi like she spent a month bingeing on Glenn Gould recordings, and it works. This is not your daddy's Four Seasons.

Very pretty. So HE90+Carbon is not a good pairing?

You should read some threads on the DIY forum here, starting with this one: http://www.head-case.org/forums/topic/11779-stax-mafia-circuit-boards/ You will only be able to buy these boards if someone makes them available for sale, or if you order a manufacturing run for yourself. Some posts here contain discussions about where and how to do this.

I actually do have access to a 3D printer, and have been thinking about needing these plugs. Are there CAD/CAM files floating around for this?

I'm in for whatever group buys emerge from this terrific design.
