. The 6S4A used in the KGST has a controlled delayed warmup for the heater. The A revision was released with this engineered in, to lower the turn on power surge in TVs. Should be kept in mind when considered as a reference for conduction in other tubes/circuits.

I know. Believe me, I know about Chinese quality.

If the delivered casework is shit, I'd sure as hell dispute the purchase to get all my money back.

Kevin, have you seen this company: http://jamestransformer.com/en/transformer/index.html They have built a pretty good reputation with their power and output EI-core transformers for DIY tube amps. They also list building custom R-cores to order. A R-100 core size would be a physically perfect fit for a Carbon. Could add electrostatic shield,.... whatever we want. There are order sheets on that site that take in all the technical specs. desired and email to them for a quote. I'm not the one to be spec'ing the transformer, maybe someone with more experience could. Possibly a GB could be arranged. I frequently travel to Shenzhen China for business (I'm there right now), and could take a day trip to their office/factory in Foshon to check them out if needed.

What would be the VA rating needed, to spec the transformer to power a Carbon?

Megatron Electrostatic Headphone Amplifier

^ I'd be interested in that. -
Please include me in the GB for 1 set including PS. I'd like to hear Kevin's or Birger's opinion on which PS has the higher potential for powering a TOTL Carbon. I have one of two Carbon 0.9 version boards about done, and my latest parts from Mouser arrived today. I leave tomorrow on a business trip, so powering up my pre-production Carbon with my KGST PS is still weeks away.

Very impressive, Nopants. -
If low capacitance is the desired parameter, look into Belden 2221 microphone and AES/EBU cable at 13pf per foot. http://www.belden.com/products/enterprisecabling/brilliance_1776_2221_microphone_cables.cfm It sounds pretty good for being fairly inexpensive.

Very nice Kevin. With split secondary AC input, can 2 small boards be stacked for +/-400VDC? Also FWIW. the zener stack for the 10m90s shows 500V.

HS, I can add that my unmodded SR-007 is a little boring in comparison to the SR-009. I suspect that voicing could be adjusted with interconnects/tube rolling etc. I am using Herbie tube dampeners ATM. Or you could try one or all of the Ric Shultz bullshit Yggy mods posted over on Head-Fi. I am sure there is a special fuse he would sell us that will do the trick.

HS, I just bought a new pair of SR-007 MK2 from StaxUSA Memorial Sale to complement my SR-009. Using my Yggy>KGST I have swapped between the two. I prefer the SR-009 to the unmodified ST-007 MK2 most of the time. The SR-009 sounds much more present and open. The SR-007 more resonant but distant. That's about it for comparing in the week I have had both. Finally got my parts ordered from Mouser for a KGSSHV Carbon yesterday. I am anxious to hear how that will drive the Staxen.
-
According to Birger, no matching of the SiCs required on the amps.
-
Is this a better PS to use with a KGSSHV Carbon? I was planning using a KGBH/ST version.
-
Really nice build, Wachara! Those white PCBs are.... uh.... er.... interesting.
-
Kevin, is this the first common gate SS Stax amp that you have made public?
-
Inspiring as always Birgir. And a kick in the pants for me to get soldering my own when I get back home. Wondering what current you have at each SIT?

Output Stage Current Requirements for Electrostatic Headphone Amps
Laowei replied to JimL's topic in Do It Yourself
Hey JimL, have you considered using the Mu output to power the ESL earspeakers instead of the plate? Some theoretical advantages, such as lower impedance and ability to drive capacitive loads. I have used it to good results in the past on preamp outs to drive long Goertz ribbon interconnects. But that was single ended, and I am not sure how this might be applicable for balanced outputs. -
That's not legal in Texas.
