I agree, they are very different. I thought I hated the Grado sound until I heard these two. Now I realize that I just hate the John Grado sound. I love the Joe Grado sound. I agree that they don't sound alike. It's just that to me, both are supposed to be "fun" headphones. They are too far from being neutral to be serious headphones. I'm saying that the PS-1 does it much, much better than the DB does.

The worst I've seen and felt (the heat) are these giant Wavestream tube monoblocks. I have no idea what the specs were, but the entire sound room was quite warm when these were running. I "experienced" them at the Analog Room in San Jose, CA in 1996. The setup sounded wonderful but was much more than I was willing to spend. Besides, I didn't need a new heater. -
Quite Fucking True I really like the PS-1 but prefer the neutrality of HP2 headphones. To me, the PS-1 is the fun headphone that the Darth Beyer is supposed to be. The PS-1 is so much better than the DB but of course, the cost is so much higher. I wish I could afford to have both the HP2 and PS-1, but I can't, so the HP2 stays.

Parafeed said that he's drawn out the circuit. That means that he's opened the amp. But it's not really a matter of trust. Please see below. I won't be surprised at all to find that you are correct. On the other hand, I also won't be surprised if maybe you are misremembering. I don't mean to imply anything else. When one states an assertion as fact, the onus is on that person to offer enough backing information. You are now searching for it and have emailed Craig. Soon you will have the backing information. I also know that you have the integrity to retract the statement if what you find doesn't match your memory. -
You have to set the points to be a real man's man.

Kevin made the initial assertion of fact, apparently without enough backing evidence. He has the onus to support his assertion. I'm more inclined to believe the person with the amp in front of them. After all, Kevin may been sent another bad picture. It would be nice if Parafeed would publish a good picture though. However, why should he ask Craig when he has the amp in front of him? -

So what you are saying is that it's somebody else's fault when you make a mistake? Now you're inventing things that I never said. Why? You quoted my post so you must have read it. So you know that nowhere does it say anything about you buying anything of Mikhail's? It's a nice use of a straw man argument though. I've never said that you don't know what you are talking about with regards to circuits, both your own and analyzing others'. What I said is that not everything you posit as fact necessarily is. That is undeniable as even you now admit, abeit in a round about way, that the Extreme really doesn't have the FET that you claimed it had when it was "designed to fail". I'm sure that you are correct the vast majority of the time, but was you say isn't gospel and shouldn't be taken as such. Too many people on HC do seem to take it that way. -
Come on. Just think how useful those pictures would be when you have the hiccups. You are mistaking a lack of respect for hate. They are not the same things. Or two or three.

You can find McConnells in all the major grocery stores in the SB area. Picking up a pint there is much less expensive than buying at the McConnells parlor. However, if you want the experience, the McConnells parlor is at the corner of Mission and De La Vina.

The Extreme does not have the FET to which Kevin referred. Kevin really knows his shit but he does make mistakes so don't take everything he says as gospel. It isn't. I have an older, one-box Platinum Extreme. Mine runs pretty warm, but not hot. I did open it up and there is some scorching underneath a diode. I recommend that you open yours up and look to see if you have any real problems. The scorching was minor in mine and probably due to over-using output tubes that drew too much current. I also suggest that you search this thread for my posts and posts around them, both to look at pictures and to read about recommendations when opening the amp. -
That's what hell is. There are plenty of nice things, just nothing that you want.

I'm a man with simple tastes. For me, nothing beats McConnells' French Vanilla. McConnells is a small, local ice cream maker. If I had to give up all desserts but one, this would be the one remaining dessert.

Stereophile's review of Musical Fidelity X-CAN V8
guzziguy replied to Asr's topic in Headphone Amplification
Yes, when it comes to headphones, I give markl a whole lot more credence than Sam or anybody else at Stereophile. That shows how little credence Stereophile gets. -
Without looking it up, how many headphone amp competitors do you think Sam can name? I'd guess one, Headroom. Tyll still seems to have all his hair. Edit: OK, two. I forgot about his darling MF.

I was about to start a thread asking how preparations for Ike were going for you. Good luck with them. Hopefully Ike will die down a lot before hitting land.

Stacy and I saw Bob Dylan at the Santa Barbara Bowl last Sunday. It was all electric and Bob did all the vocals. The music was mostly rockabilly style. Bob sang with a frenetic style in which he would belt out a line really quickly, and then wait for the music to catch up before singing the next line. As a result, it was often hard to understand the words he was singing and often very hard to determine the song. Stacy, who is younger than me, had a lot of trouble recognizing the two encore songs. They were "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Blowin' in the Wind". I'll admit that I had a bit of trouble too. I kind of liked this style, though definitely would have liked hearing some of the old songs in the old style. Still, it was interesting to hear this take on his music. The band was very good. You can find more info here. Look for the 9/7 concert near the bottom of the page. Tonight, it's Brian Wilson at the Lobero in Santa Barbara.

Don't worry, there's a DIY -=expert=- on HF that will be happy to help you if you have any problems. Or even if you don't have any problems.

If you don't like traffic, stay away from Dallas and its burbs and OC. Either would be like living in hell for me and my wife. C'mon. They pronounce Rs in the Eastern part of the state. They just have a sophisticated algorithm in which they remove all Rs from the middle of a word, and in words ending with A, remove the A and add ER to the end of the word. I just ate some cold pizzer.

I don't think that you'll have much of a problem. This definitely comes under "cruel and unusual punishment".

The birds get mad at me when I give them hot sauce.

Left over cold pepperoni and sausage pizza. Yum! Of course, the birds think so too, so I have to give them the crusts.

Who cares about SQ for the gym? I just want some music to take my mind off of what I'm doing. So I use stock earbuds for the gym. They sound good enough and I don't care when my sweat finally destroys them. I also don't like over the ear stuff in the gym, so Nate's solution wouldn't work for me. When you care about SQ, I would recommend the PK2 over the PK3 straight from an iPod. However, Yuin has released a new line of earbuds, the OK line. I haven't heard any of them so can't make a recommendation, but you probably should check them out too.
