  1. I nominate morphsci.
  2. Its looks shouldn't surprise anybody, who knows the RSA product line, too much. It takes most of its styling cues from the B-52. I much prefer the looks of the BHSE but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. A lot of people will prefer this. Ray's amps tend to be well-built. That's not be an RSA issue. I'm more interested in how it sounds and whether it will have reliability issues due to Ray's lack of experience designing stat amps.
  3. I went by Rat Shack today to look for a cheap toslink cable. Their web page suggest that all I would find in their B&M stores would be Monster cables. Sure enough, the cheapest 3' cable was a Monster going for $28 plus tax. I can wait for the new Monoprice cable to arrive on Wednesday or Thursday.
  4. I vote for giving him the choice between the two and letting him decide.
  5. Since the connectors only "kind of" lock into the set top box and not at all into the receiver, it's likely (I really hope) to be a cable issue. If not, the receiver will spend some time at a Samsung repair facility in the near future.
  6. That works to for trying a different cable, I'll head by Radio Shack. I'm trying to connect a Scientific Atlanta 4250HDC set top box and the receiver from a Samsung HT-TX715T Home Theater.
  7. For a grand total of $3.58 delivered, I'll give the cheaper cable a try.
  8. I just checked again and I seemed to have ordered a $3.36 "premium" optical cable. I'll order a nonpremium ($1.74) toslink cable and see how that works.
  9. Grilled ham with TJ's BBQ sauce, grilled fingerling potatoes with garlic and rosemary, and grilled brussel sprouts (in foil packet with olive oil and bourbon). It's a very easy dinner to cook and it's yummy.
  10. Hi Hiroshi. Nope, I got their cheapest cables. I guess I'll have to try again, but I doubt it will matter. I suspect I'll have to try different cables at some point. Edit: Nope, doesn't help. On the set top box, it kind of locks but is a very fragile connection. Move the box or cable wrong, and it's out. It won't even stay in the receiver's socket, no sense of locking at all. In fact, there's no sense of a semi-solid connection at all.
  11. I'm trying to run the sound from my set top box to my home theater receiver. I'd like to use the receiver's digital optical input so I get 5.1 (it's the only input my receiver has that will allow this. My set top box has an optical output, so it should be easy. I ordered a digital optical cable from Monoprice. Today I tried to connect them. The connectors go into the socket, but won't stay in place. I see no locking mechanism, which seems pretty strange to me. I must be doing something wrong as everybody would have thrown out optical digital a long time ago if the physical connections were this fragile. Can anybody tell me what the trick is to use connect this cable? Thanks.

  13. Happy Birthday Vince. You're still money!
  14. Are JP#'s W2002 still for sale. For the price of a pair of Darth Beyers, you can buy pair of gorgeous, good sounding (at least I'm told), closed headphones.
  15. I had forgotten about this. I'm sending a check to Stephen tomorrow. I don't have any N devices yet, but it will happen eventually. Shoot, I barely have G devices.
  16. Thanks Antonio. So far, I'm having a fun time. I'm working for a small company doing military contracts. It all involves non-classified data so There isn't that hassle. I've work with the Technical Lead before and get along well with her. The job is part-time (20 hours/week) so the pressure is quite low. It gives me something to do and finances my toys. Almost perfect.
  17. The shrill part is people screaming when they hear how bad it sounds and then remember how much is cost.
  18. Though I wouldn't do it (at least not here ), I suspect that one could actual resell and make a profit. At least until the supply becomes consistent.
  19. To reward myself for getting a job after being "semi-retired" for more than a year, I just pre-ordered a pair from Headroom. Tyll gave me a coffee cup at the Orange County Audiophile meet and I owe him. Actually, I'm hoping that they don't ship before CanJam. Then I'll be able to listen to them and cancel the order if I'm not impressed enough. If I do get them and decide not to keep them, I'll dispose of them through here or HF rather than send them back to Headroom, unless there is an actual problem with the pair I received.
  20. Hi All, I finally upgraded my laptop and it has 802.11g support, so it's time to upgrade my ancient Linksys BEFW11S4 router. I'm blindingly happy with it. It hasn't given me a single problem in the years that I've owned it. So I'm inclined to go with the latest Linksys version of this router, the Linksys WRT54G2, which goes for $44.89 at Amazon. I know that Linksys is not the favorite with many people here. Can the many network- and wireless-wise people here either validate my choice or suggest alternatives (or both)? Thanks in advance for your advice. Regard, -ken
  21. Time to check some IP addresses?
  22. Me too, though it's usually a waste of time.

This is the most entertaining short story I've read in years. This kid has a big future writing movie scripts.
  24. Was that your entire Sea Smoke allocation? Don't forget about me when it's time to order more Wedell. Please, whimper, whimper. Speaking of which, I was in Arroyo Grande this Saturday and had a nice discussion with the wine maker at Toucan Wines. He said that they make a chardonnay (I think, my memory sucks now) for Wedell. After the free tasting, I bought 3 bottles of the 2006 Cuve
  25. I love spam either grilled or fried. It makes a great breakfast meat. Scots eat haggis. That means that they'll eat any other meat-like substance too. See, I told you that Scots will eat any meat-like substance.
