Hi Hiroshi. Nope, I got their cheapest cables. I guess I'll have to try again, but I doubt it will matter. I suspect I'll have to try different cables at some point. Edit: Nope, doesn't help. On the set top box, it kind of locks but is a very fragile connection. Move the box or cable wrong, and it's out. It won't even stay in the receiver's socket, no sense of locking at all. In fact, there's no sense of a semi-solid connection at all.

I'm trying to run the sound from my set top box to my home theater receiver. I'd like to use the receiver's digital optical input so I get 5.1 (it's the only input my receiver has that will allow this. My set top box has an optical output, so it should be easy. I ordered a digital optical cable from Monoprice. Today I tried to connect them. The connectors go into the socket, but won't stay in place. I see no locking mechanism, which seems pretty strange to me. I must be doing something wrong as everybody would have thrown out optical digital a long time ago if the physical connections were this fragile. Can anybody tell me what the trick is to use connect this cable? Thanks.

Happy Birthday Vince. You're still money!

Are JP#'s W2002 still for sale. For the price of a pair of Darth Beyers, you can buy pair of gorgeous, good sounding (at least I'm told), closed headphones.

I had forgotten about this. I'm sending a check to Stephen tomorrow. I don't have any N devices yet, but it will happen eventually. Shoot, I barely have G devices. -
Thanks Antonio. So far, I'm having a fun time. I'm working for a small company doing military contracts. It all involves non-classified data so There isn't that hassle. I've work with the Technical Lead before and get along well with her. The job is part-time (20 hours/week) so the pressure is quite low. It gives me something to do and finances my toys. Almost perfect.

The shrill part is people screaming when they hear how bad it sounds and then remember how much is cost.

Though I wouldn't do it (at least not here ), I suspect that one could actual resell and make a profit. At least until the supply becomes consistent.

To reward myself for getting a job after being "semi-retired" for more than a year, I just pre-ordered a pair from Headroom. Tyll gave me a coffee cup at the Orange County Audiophile meet and I owe him. Actually, I'm hoping that they don't ship before CanJam. Then I'll be able to listen to them and cancel the order if I'm not impressed enough. If I do get them and decide not to keep them, I'll dispose of them through here or HF rather than send them back to Headroom, unless there is an actual problem with the pair I received.

Hi All, I finally upgraded my laptop and it has 802.11g support, so it's time to upgrade my ancient Linksys BEFW11S4 router. I'm blindingly happy with it. It hasn't given me a single problem in the years that I've owned it. So I'm inclined to go with the latest Linksys version of this router, the Linksys WRT54G2, which goes for $44.89 at Amazon. I know that Linksys is not the favorite with many people here. Can the many network- and wireless-wise people here either validate my choice or suggest alternatives (or both)? Thanks in advance for your advice. Regard, -ken

Time to check some IP addresses?

Me too, though it's usually a waste of time.

This is the most entertaining short story I've read in years. This kid has a big future writing movie scripts.

Was that your entire Sea Smoke allocation? Don't forget about me when it's time to order more Wedell. Please, whimper, whimper. Speaking of which, I was in Arroyo Grande this Saturday and had a nice discussion with the wine maker at Toucan Wines. He said that they make a chardonnay (I think, my memory sucks now) for Wedell. After the free tasting, I bought 3 bottles of the 2006 Cuve

I love spam either grilled or fried. It makes a great breakfast meat. Scots eat haggis. That means that they'll eat any other meat-like substance too. See, I told you that Scots will eat any meat-like substance.

This one will cute you to death.

There's the rub. That's why we'll wait for more reviews and see for ourselves before buying. If playing VHS is close to that of a DVD, then it's an easy buy for us. If not, we'll look for a more traditional BD.
-
Dinny, what Al isn't telling you is that you'll have to do his CLE for him in return. Gee, are there ethics classes involved in CLE?
-
Absolutely. But if you already have a large, legacy VHS collection, it won't be worth the cost to replace them all. With a player like this, you can upgrade the movies that you really love without losing the entire VHS collection. Here is a mini-review. VHS is upconverted to 1080p. The reviewer says this: "..., the BD70V makes standard VHS tapes look pretty sweet indeed. No, it's not the same as Blu-ray, or even a good DVD, but it's probably better than you've ever seen your old tapes look before." So to us, it makes it worth the extra $100 to get the best from our VHS library. Of course, we'll test it out first to verify that the upconversion is worth the extra $100. If not, we'll keep a VHS player around.
-
Probably not much. But if you already have the VHS, why buy the DVD or BD. I guess I understand the BD if you really want it, but not DVD at all if a VHS tape can be made to have pretty much the same picture quality.

I bought one for my wife, though the $199 laptop became a $440 laptop once upgrades, shipping and tax were factored in.
-
Stacy decided that she "needed" a laptop so I just ordered a Mini 9 for her. After customizing to have max memory, ss disk space and Bluetooth capability, plus shipping and tax, the total for this $199 laptop was: $441.17 Oh well, still very cheap for a nice laptop. She was pleased that the OS was Ubuntu as she likes to play with Linux.

I got an email from Dell today. They are having a general one day sale so there are other interesting things too. I haven't checked out the Dell web site but here is what was in the email: INSPIRON

My wife has a bunch of VHS tapes so we'll check out the Panasonic DMP-70V when it comes out. It should be a great bluray player and supposedly does a great job of upconverting VHS. If this is true, we'll definitely get one.
