After setting up and listening to the new home theater, I agree with your and Dusty's opinions. With a regular DVD, it sounds pretty good. It's a true "huge" improvement over the TV's sound system. However, I suspect that it's not nearly good enough to discern a difference between 5.1 surround sound and Dolby True HD or DTS HD Master Audio. Either way, it's unlikely that I'll know in the near future as I have no HT upgrade planned other than the bluray player. Thanks again to everyone for their advice. My wife and I are deliriously happy with our HT setup.

You were right Hiroshi, the cable came today. I figured that it wouldn't get into the mail in Chino until Monday evening and so wouldn't get here until tomorrow. Shows what I know. Thanks, I appreciate it. OK, I just tried the Monoprice "non-premium" $1.57 3' cable. It locks securely both into the receiver and into the set top box. Even better, it actually works. Now I can route the cable sound track to the home theater. Now I'm not so down on the toslink jack/plug mechanism. I think that a coax digital cable makes a more secure connection but now it's not as important to me, as this will suffice. Plus, it's not like I have a choice here.

I have no real knowledge about it, but my guess is that after most of the older, respected members at HF left or stopped posting, suddenly he found himself in the spotlight and it went to his head. Now he thinks that he's an important person in the headphone world and that its his job to build interest in it. And he takes his job seriously.

The original Thunderbolt was the P-47 so they called the A-10 the 'Thunderbolt II'. The P-47 was a WWII fighter. Ray must feel that the HE-90 market is what he wants to attack. I don't know why. I think I'd aim towards headphones still being made. But then I've never been accused of being a marketing genuis. Yes and no. The lack of the dorsal fin caused stability problems as Tom pointed out. Also, I suspect that while it greatly improved vision, some pilots still missed that big hunk of armor behind their head. AKAIK, virtually everybody involved with the plane calls it the warthog. The official Thunderbolt II name never caught on. When has Ray ever been cannibalistic with his product line? The early models had 3 bladed props. I don't remember when the huge 4-bladed prop was used but it made a huge difference in performance. The N version also had a 2800 HP engine (as opposed to previous models 2000 HP) and was the fastest US WWII fight, though I suspect that the Navy's Bearcat, which entered service very late in the war, may have rivaled it.

Eschew hell, I fucking won't buy Monster. Rat Shack has a $10.00 non-Monster cable that is "web only". I'd rather buy a different Monoprice or BJC cable instead.

Its looks shouldn't surprise anybody, who knows the RSA product line, too much. It takes most of its styling cues from the B-52. I much prefer the looks of the BHSE but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. A lot of people will prefer this. Ray's amps tend to be well-built. That's not be an RSA issue. I'm more interested in how it sounds and whether it will have reliability issues due to Ray's lack of experience designing stat amps.

I went by Rat Shack today to look for a cheap toslink cable. Their web page suggest that all I would find in their B&M stores would be Monster cables. Sure enough, the cheapest 3' cable was a Monster going for $28 plus tax. I can wait for the new Monoprice cable to arrive on Wednesday or Thursday.

I vote for giving him the choice between the two and letting him decide.

Since the connectors only "kind of" lock into the set top box and not at all into the receiver, it's likely (I really hope) to be a cable issue. If not, the receiver will spend some time at a Samsung repair facility in the near future.

That works to for trying a different cable, I'll head by Radio Shack. I'm trying to connect a Scientific Atlanta 4250HDC set top box and the receiver from a Samsung HT-TX715T Home Theater.

For a grand total of $3.58 delivered, I'll give the cheaper cable a try.

I just checked again and I seemed to have ordered a $3.36 "premium" optical cable. I'll order a nonpremium ($1.74) toslink cable and see how that works.

Grilled ham with TJ's BBQ sauce, grilled fingerling potatoes with garlic and rosemary, and grilled brussel sprouts (in foil packet with olive oil and bourbon). It's a very easy dinner to cook and it's yummy.
